  1. A Su-27 of the 'Russian Knights' landed with its gear up after an airshow in Bratislava.

The missile launch rails under the engine intakes acted as skids - later the aircraft was raised up and the undercarriage was lowered.

After a few dents were hammered out, the aircaft took of to its home base of Kubinka in Russia.

There are loads of images and video of the event - just Google 'Russian Knighs landing'.....

  2. IIRC, the port side entry is a hangover from the days of mounted cavalry.

Early fighters (WWI) were piloted by young cavalry officers who were used to mounting their horses from the left hand side.

Left foot in the stirrup, right leg over the horses rump to sit upright in the saddle.

Swap the horse for a Camel or SE 5 - and there you have it.

At least that's what I read.....

  3. Lucius - where are the attched fighters?

The Zveno label means 'flight' or 'Link' and refers to the experimental flights of the TB-1 Bomber with two I-4 fighters attached... (Zveno 1)

The TB-3 was used to carry various fighters including the I-16 (Zveno SPB)

The final one was the 'Aviamatka' - a TB-3 with FIVE fighters attched....

There's more on my (now rather clunky) web page - here...

    TB-1 Zveno : -  http://vvs.hobbyvista.com/Modeling/Tupolev/TB-1/Duffy/index.php

    TB-3 Aviamatka :- http://vvs.hobbyvista.com/Modeling/Tupolev/TB-3/Duffy/index.php

    Hope this helps

  4. Stunning conversion - you really pulled it off.

A bit late for you now, but I've found some more pics of the RSR - taken by me during a visit to the Moscow Aviation Institute in 2006.

The fuselage section and wing panels are just gathering dust in a corner...

  5. Just think...... If the RAF had operated the P-38, they would have to name the F-35 as the Lightning III (after P-38 and EE Lightning).

The USAF would still be calling their F-35 as Lightning II.......

    Just a thought...

Some show the main gear to have two wheels, other four.

During one of my many aviation visits to Russia, in 2006 we went to the Moscow Aviation Institute -not only were we allowed inside this once top-secret place, we were given free access to the Structures Faculty, where they had dozens of airframe and parts stripped dow.

We were given permission to photograph anything we liked.

They have the remains of the Tsybin RSR - the centre section with a four-wheel bogey....

I have a couple more pics that I can dig out and upload if you want - they don't give much detail though.

Other photos of the visit can be found here :- http://www.flankers-site.co.uk/mos2006_day02.html

    Scroll down to find them.......

We were supposed to re-visit the place in 2007 - but when we arrived at the entrance, they wouldn't let us in !!!

I wonder if somone got into trouble for allowing us access in 2006?

    Great progress with the conversion....

"No, I'm the only one who can get it, but you may have a flat white."

When I was at infants school (many years ago), I put my hand up and asked 'Please can I go to the toilet Sir?'

He replied 'You may - I don't know if you can or not'.

I sat down not knowing whether I could go or not.

When I built the Trumpeter Tu-160 it had a toilet that I never cut off the sprue, much less added to the model.

I added a toilet-roll, a first-aid box and some reading material - just to be a bit whimsical.

None of which can be seen of course.
