  1. So after all the decals were finally on, the Sea King looked like this... And after some ProModellers Wash and weathering powder last night, she looks like this now...(picture not the clearest, sorry) I had a good search of images online and while many examples I saw were very clean, some were quite weathered. Hope I haven't overdone it.... Still have some tiny aerials to add but almost there! Thanks for looking. Dermot
  2. So trying to get this one finished this year, after failing miserably to do it in time for the USAAF Europe 1942-45 GB! Here's the latest progress.. The kit cockpit framing is a little on the thick side (it is a 60s era kit after all) so decided to replace it with a spare Academy canopy I had in the stash. The before pic.. And after...still needs some tidying up in places (over-eager cutting ) but looks much better. Work on the interior continues - most of this won't be visible when finished but once I got started, I found it hard to stop. The lump of sprue in the bombay is a stiffener and won't be seen. The radio room also needed a "spacer" to fill in a gap... The pilots are coming along well - am happy how they look and that they have some movement to them, These are from Airfix (newer boxings) and have had arms and heads modified in the process.. I'm not trying to copy the original painting but am using it as inspiration.. Thanks for reading and enjoy your modelling. Dermot
  3. And here's the box shot. I considered using the Revell kit but had this one in the stash and looking forward to getting started! Sprue shots later this evening. Cheers, Dermot
  4. Cheers Mish - if you could move my thread http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=234921552 to the 'normal' forum would be great. Appreciate your help! Dermot
  5. Well done everyone! Quick question Mish - for unfinished builds (like mine), should I start a new WIP thread in Aircraft Modelling and link it back to my build thread here? Or should I just get my finger out and start a new thread entirely from the start over in WIP? Thanks and sorry for the duh question. Cheers, Dermot
  6. One of my favourite Tomcat schemes - fantastic work! Is this 1/48 or 1/72? Cheers, Dermot
  7. With ongoing delays in the development of the Short Take Off and Vertical Landing (STOVL) variant of the F-35 due to weight and software issues, the UK Government invoked a clause in the contract, thereby enabling F-35 partner (and member of the Eurofighter Consortium), BAE, the opportunity to investigate other concurrent development options so as to ensure a fully operational CATOBAR (Catapult Assisted Take Off/Arrested Recovery) or STOBAR (Short take off/Arreseted Recovery) fighter, reconnaisance and strike aircraft for the Royal Navy by 2014. Options considered included the Sukhoi Su-33, the Dasssault Sea Rafale M, the Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet and the newly developed JAS Sea Gripen in production for Sweden's new Malmo class of medium carriers. With the Eurofigher just entering service with RAF XI Squadron, BAE engineers wondered whether the long tradition of adapting land-based fighters for Royal Navy service - the Hurricane;Spitfire and Harrier to name but three - might be feasible for the Eurofighter. Measurements revealed that the aircraft would fit on deck and in hangars without the need for wing folds and that the excellent low speed maneuverability and flight control systems would be ideal for carrier operations. However, a number of further modifications would be required. These were identified as; - Some strengthening and corrosion protection of the airframe for carrier ops - Inclusion of an arrestor hook for on-board recovery - Addition of conformal fuel tanks to increase range - Thrust vectoring engine nozzles to assist with take off and landings - Uprated main landing gear including double-wheel nose gear - Uprated avionics for strike and reconnaissance duties - Upgraded FLIR, sensors and camera to increase the pilot's view past the canards on approach and landing A series of three development aircraft were fitted with these upgrades to allow for testing on land, at sea and in the air. Following an extensive and successful sea trial, the Sea Typhoon FRS1 was officially accepted into service on 30 December 2013, ahead of the in-service launch of 2014. Both Fleet Air Arm pilots and the Royal Navy were extremely happy with the new aircraft and export orders are already at advanced stages of negotiation with Australia, Brazil and India. That's the backstory - will start the build hopefully tomorrow night! Thanks for looking. Dermot
  8. "Wiith limited modifications, Typhoon would be capable of carrier operations across the full range of environmental conditions, and would have comparable take-off and landing performance to equivalent multi-role naval aircraft. This would allow Typhoon's exceptional operational capability to be employed in the naval domain". Eurofighter Consortium; 2011. Back story to follow....
  9. Hey everyone, Well it's October 4th and unlike the B-17F "Ye Olde Pub" who made it back, i'm just not going to make it in time with this build. A combination of about 3 weeks lost to being ill and the usual work/life issues has all added to that. To be honest, I'm gutted as I really wanted to finish this one on time for this GB but it just wasn't to be. As I'm displaying her in flight, I needed a crew and converting/painting them probably held me up too. And scratching an interior. And replicating damage..... Trust me, I will keep going with this build and will post over in WIP as I go. Thanks for all your words of support, thanks to Welzy and Smiffy for hosting and well done to all who finished their USAAF builds. Cheers, Dermot
  10. Hi all and just a quick update on this one which I'm finally nearing finishing. Pre decals last night... And about an hour or so later.. Some bits left to do like aerials, decal the rotors and weathering. For an old kit, I'm happy how the old girl is turning out! Thanks for reading, enjoy your modelling. Dermot
  11. Lovely build Sean - those up-armoured versions have serious attitude. Look forward to seeing it in the flesh! Cheers, Dermot
  12. Very nice work and a cracking little kit! Dermot
  13. That's looking very tasty so far Dave - will really come alive with the decals! Cheers, Dermot
  14. Sorry for not posting on this in a while - have been away from modelling due to a run of bad health lately. Am enjoying the great builds here and will try to post something this weekend. Cheers, Dermot
  15. Hi everyone and here's the latest on this one. A coat of primer and two coats of Humbrol British Rail Yellow later (seemed like the best match to me) The blades are also being upgrade to the newer spec. The canopy masked up and painted. And now coming together - the fit of the windscreen is shocker but hopefully the worse parts are hidden by the black surround. The filter box is a resin aftermarket bought a few years back. Will hopefully tiidy up some bits over the weekend, followed by Future and decals. Thanks for reading! Dermot
  16. I was 1! My birthday was the day Apollo 11 took off. I still have my Dad's atlas which had a map of the moon - on it, my Dad wrote "Tranquillity Base" in advance of the landing. My family tell me that Dad had us all up to watch it happen, to witness history. Fighter pilot. Test pilot. Lunar Module pilot. Absolute legend. Godspeed Neil Armstrong.
  17. Cheers Trev - when you say decal paper, do you mean the stuff my decals come on? I have some used paper (don't ask me why) lying about somewhere here...
  18. Quick update on my build. Have made some internal bulkheads which will be mostly hard to see but need to have them there. Still a bit of work to do on them and sorry for the cr*ppy picture quality... Also took a hacksaw to the rear left tailplane which was badly damaged on "Pub"...before And after with some ribs added too..these will get covered with something to represent fabric (tape most likely) Looks better when on! Started drilling out the top turret too...just the left side done for now.. Last Friday 17th August was the anniversary of the first USAAF raid on Schweinfurt & Regensburg which proved so costly to the heavy bombers and their crews...you can read more about it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schweinfurt%E2%80%93Regensburg_mission Thanks as always for reading. Dermot
  19. Nice start Philip, look forward to seeing this one. Dermot
  20. Nice one and hope to see it at tomorrow's club meet; Paul will be in rotor-heaven! I'll have the F-16 and UK Police Ec-135 chopper with me, as well as the B-17F for the USAAF GB here. All the best, Dermot
  21. That's lovely stuff Jason and looking great - will look mean when finished! Remind me - did you use rattlecan or brush for the main colour? Cheers, D
  22. Count me in - I would definitely build another Lynx! Are What-If schemes allowed? Dermot
