  1. Hi everyone, This is my entry for the GB, from Hobby Boss in 1/72. Some references....not all relevant to this build but good reads nonetheless. This will be a build of a VF-41 'Black Aces' Tomcat from the Gulf of Sidra incident in 1981. (Source: Wikipedia commons; public domain) It probably won't be the most colourful build on this GB (as she's mostly grey) but an eventful story and one that's worth remembering I think. Good luck with your own builds! Dermot
  2. Thanks all and she's finished! Thanks for all your comments and advice. More photos here. All the best, Dermot
  3. Hey everyone, Here's my first RFI (and first Tomcat) for this year, Hasegawa's original 1970s-era issue. You can read the WIP here but in summary: Model: Hasegawa JS-134 in 1/72 Build: OOB mostly but the seats & cockpit got some minor tarting up Decals: VF-1 Wolfpack from the later Hasegawa 04039 boxing Paint: White sprayed (Halfords), otherwise brush painted with Revell Acrylics. Future, Pro-Modellers wash, Humbrol Satin varnish She's not perfect, has a few goofs here and there and won't win any awards. But for a 70's kit, I'm really happy with it. Now on to my next Tomcat! Thanks for looking, Dermot
  4. And as she looks tonight. Hopefully will be finished in time for tomorrow's club meet! For any Tomcat experts out there, they'll spot the Sparrow rails aren't 100% accurate. The kit only had options to hang it under the fuselage with the AIM-54s (with one more Phoenix on each wing pylon) So I modded the wing pylon to take the Sparrow instead. Not a perfect mod but I'm happy with it. And it is a kit from the mid-1970s! Thanks for looking, Dermot
  5. Cool build Aaron! My sis and her husband lived there in the late-80s; I remember the heat and that smell of jet fuel too! Look forward to more of your build. Dermot
  6. As she looked last night, with the wings and u/c on. The panel lines are pencil (mostly ok but a few strays here and there). The wash was a funny experience - it went on great but didn't release in some places (my fault, not the product. Thankfully the mistakes are in places that are not very evident (i.e under the nose) I can probably live with it...... What do people think - too heavy with the weathering?? Thanks for looking, Dermot
  7. Cracking build of an iconic jet and colour scheme! Dermot
  8. Thanks all - I experimented using a cut 'wavy' mask from Tamiya tape. It worked out well in the end I think but with any brush painting, I had to use a fine blade edge to remove the 'edge' where the paint met the mask. Started one side of decals as well - some of the 'slime' lights aren't exactly in the right place but close enough. Next up, the right hand side! Dermot
  9. Absolutely awesome work on that Radleigh. Sorry if I missed this but how did you do the winter camo? Cheers, Dermot
  10. Quick update here...masked and painted the nose, glare panel and wing bladders.. Added the tails and a coat of Future, ready for the rest of the decals tonight! You can probably make out the tail decals are a bit 'ivory' than 'white' but I'm happy with progress. Cheers, Dermot
  11. Well, having painted the leading metal edge of the wing too wide (thanks fellas!), it was out with the masking tape, Mk1 eyeball, and a brush (as I'm brush painter)...pleased with the result. Next up, the fuselage. The white is a couple of coats of white from a spray can (was never going to brush that!) Followed by two brushed coats of acrylic light gull grey mixed according to Revell's ratios....or as close as I could get. Might be a shade on the slightly dark side..my desk light probably brightens it up. As I'm a brush painter, I've invested in some good quality brushes lately and am really happy with the results from them. Sure, there are some areas to touch up here and there, but am very happy how the curvy-tape-mask worked as well. And yes, I know there's a sh*t seam just aft of the wing bladder which really shows up. I can live with it on this build! All the best, Dermot
  12. +1 here too. Cracking paint and weathering job sir! Dermot
  13. Thanks!! What do we think? Remask the slat edge and try to work in the top colour grey? Or leave well-enough alone?
  14. Haven't posted on this in a while, but have been busy with it. Got the wings and tails finished though the tails will need some touching up as the decals were damaged in places & see through in others. These are the decals from the more recent Hasegawa VF-1 boxing, not the originals in this kit. I finished the missiles too, though something tells me the decals for the Phoenix are training (i.e. not live) rounds?? All the best, Dermot
  15. Great thanks. On to the Amazon wishlist with it so! Is it an A or B model?
  16. @Parabat - what's the story with that one? Some sort of ground test a/c? What's the book itself like? Dermot
  17. Like it and look forward to your next build! Dermot
  18. Hi barneyadi, As others have mentioned here, it builds into a good looking model. This is mine from last year, also brush-painted (I added an interior and the filter box is aftermarket) When building, there's a couple of areas to watch out for and that can save you some hassle and really improve the finish.. I added a spacer of plastic card behind the engine intake part (see below pic). The fit isn't great on these parts and it helps the kit part fit better. Just glue the spacer and trim off the excess. There's a contoured piece that fits under the nose - again, some plastic card shims really help this part to fit better. If you hold the fuselage parts snug together, they should leave a gap in the nose (you can just make it out below) By leaving this gap and then filling it with putty or plastic card, the canopy will fit almost perfectly. However if you glue the nose together as the instructions show, the canopy will overhang quite a bit on both sides. Have fun and look forward to seeing pics of your build! All the best, Dermot
  19. Really nice work on that interior and paint job! All the best, Dermot
  20. Hey all, Fuselage all buttoned up. Just decals on the panels, seat belts from Tamiya tape and ejection seat rings from fuse wire using Andy Mullen's patented jig thing.. Some cleanup to do in the usual places and then off to the paint shop with her! All the best, Dermot
