  1. So paint finally on this one which are Tamiya mixes based on ratios I found online. This is the second scheme in the Frog kit for II Gruppe/JG.3, 1945

Masking the lower wing for aluminum on the unpainted bit

And the upper sides. I'm not sure if the camo edges were sharp or soft by this stage of the conflict. The mottle was attempted using an Eduard mottle mask.

And then masked and sprayed the fuselage band white followed by a coat of Klear.

Happy with progress so far, decals later tonight!

  2. Hi all and here's my latest, Frog's 1970s He-219 nightfighter for the WW2 Twins group build here. The build thread is here but to recap:

    Kit: Frog F177 1976 boxing

Build: Opened canopy, added details to the cockpit from plasticard. otherwise OOB. Canopy center section is converted from some plastic packaging after I cracked the original when cutting it open.

Paints: Tamiya, Klear, W&N Matt Varnish

Decals: Mix of kit orginals and spares for an indicative example, not an actual a/c

Other: About 60g of weight to keep her nose heavy!

Yes, the details are clunky and a bit simple here & there but I can live with that. I wanted to practice mottling and learned a lot for whenever I build a better kit..

Thanks for looking and happy modelling.

  4. So all the final fiddly bits added and she's done.

For a 1970s kit, I'm happy how it's turned out, Sure, some of the details are heavy/clunky but I had fun and learned a lot (the mottling) which will help whenever I build a better kit. I think the CA-bottle-packaging-as-open-canopy turned out well.

As always, thanks for your comments and encouragement and to the hosts for a Group Build so enjoyable, I actually finished two builds :clap2: More pics in the Gallery.

    Take care and happy modelling.

    Fantastic!

I have the kit in my stash (the Special Hobby boxing) but that is where it stays until I get the motivation.

I know you would have needed to do a lot of work to get it looking so good, so my hat's off to you.

    Well done! 👏👏👏

Like kapam I too have that kit in my stash.  Seeing your masterwork. . . . . I don’t know, does it inspire me to drag it out or hang my head in shame knowing mine would never look as great as yours?  Incredible job.

    13 hours ago, Billy54 said:

You really did a very nice job with that kit and you should be proud of your effort. Like kapam and Ad-4N, I also have that kit in my stash and after seeing your build I may just sell or swap mine because I know I could never finish it anywhere near as good as yours.

Thank you! The pictures hide a lot of mistakes and goofs. I'm an average modeller so my advice is go build the kits you have.

I admit it's no shake-and-bake-TamiGawa and you'll need to use all the modelling skills you've learned. Sure, there are a few challenges along the way (canopy fit/butt joins galore/engine cowlings/very-fussy undercarriage etc) but they're not deal-breakers.

Stick with it and you'll be rewarded with a kit that not many people build....and (for me anyway), a great sense of achievement at the end.

    Happy modelling.

  6. So a quick update on the Uhu, Some decals added (a mix of the kit originals and some spares). Not really going for a specific aircraft, just indicative of the type really. She also got some weathering with pastels to break up the monotone colours.

53632131400_95eedbbb96_b.jpgFrog_He_219_Uhu_Wip_14 by Dermot Moriarty, on Flickr

On to the canopy - after cutting it in three, the centre section cracked badly so I got it prepped to use as a mould to smash mould a new one.

53632131380_55b5130afc_b.jpgFrog_He_219_Uhu_Wip_15 by Dermot Moriarty, on Flickr

I noticed that the top of a Superglue packaging had a similar-looking profile..

53632022694_e42f1a3545_b.jpgFrog_He_219_Uhu_Wip_16 by Dermot Moriarty, on Flickr

So using that as a guide, I started cutting out the packaging. It's not 100% the same size (being a little wider in profile) but since the canopy will be open, I think it will be fine in this scale.

53631685981_8d6dea26b2_b.jpgFrog_He_219_Uhu_Wip_17 by Dermot Moriarty, on Flickr

Then marked the edges with a Sharpie. to help with painting. It's not an absolute match for the original but will do the job.

53632131370_b85ff8d461_b.jpgFrog_He_219_Uhu_Wip_18 by Dermot Moriarty, on Flickr

Home stretch now with the final bits to add like the wheels, props and nose aerials.

    Cheers,

    Dermot

  7. Hi all and first finish of this year for me., Sword's 1/72 Sikorsky S-43 'Baby Clipper' in US Navy service for the "WW2 Twins GB".

The build thread is here but to recap:

    Kit: Sword Sikorsky S-43/JRS-1 SW72019

Build: Fuselage & wings were part-started by another modeller - the kit was finished by me OOB

Paints: Tamiya acrylics sprayed. Johnshon's Klear.

Decals: BuNo1063/1-J-1 from Navy Squadron VJ-1, Pearl Harbour survvor. Decals are from Eduard release of this kit (thank you Toby)

Extras: Wire and sprue for rigging. Krystal Klear for all the cabin windows.

Notes: Too many to mention! One of those kits where nothing really fits together. Approach with a lot of caution!

Thanks for looking, take care and happy modelling.

  9. So after a couple of long evenings battling with the rigging (I'm so bad at it) and that very fiddly landing gear, she's done!

Really not great by a long shot but happy to have finished it and first completion for 2024.  I appreciate all your comments and encouragement throughout this one, thanks to the hosts for running a great GB with lots of cool builds and thanks  @Planebuilder62for the spare decals. Will post more pics in the gallery and happy modelling.

Thank you for that, I'm not that "modern media" savvy and didn't know they have a FB page, only a rather inactive website (which has been a great resource for me nonetheless).  I've sent a request to join.

Thanks Rory and appreciate the request.

  13. So time to get this one moving as well. Needed some putty for those wing joints.

53600622913_e74cff69d5_b.jpgFrog_He_219_Uhu_Wip_9 by Dermot Moriarty, on Flickr

Then went with a coat of Flat Black underneath, mostly to hide the awful fit! Masked up to spray the top colour of RLM 76 - this was a home mix of:

    XF-2 Flat White – 7 parts
    XF-23 Light Blue – 1 part
    XF-66 Light Grey – 2 parts

53600749674_5688437d2d_b.jpgFrog_He_219_Uhu_Wip_10 by Dermot Moriarty, on Flickr

The port engine still had a nasty seam so that's been rubbed back and was repainted. Once that was done, a coat of RLM 75 which was made up of 5 parts XF-24 Dark Grey and 1 part XF-50 Field Blue. I used a mottle mask for the first time and definitely need some practice. I'll probably go back in with the RLM 75 to give it some sharper definition as it's a bit messy in places.

And then with the lower masking removed. Some touch-ups needed here and there but mostly happy how it's looking so far.
