    Thanks for the info Iceman, still not clear in my mind about the trolley elevators but maybe beefy has the answer.

    Evening Beefy,

     

    Other than the Korean build my other main go-to build reference is RGL's build HERE which I'm sure you've read.  I'm not sure how much extra detailing is required on the boat decks as I have no accurate reference for vents, doors etc.  RGL used the Mk.1 detail set which had extra doors to access gun platforms and from the Island but my trouble is getting bogged down with finite details so the intention is to crack on and create what looks good on the fly.

    I intend to have at least 1 aircraft ready on the cat with a few trundling along on their launch cradles and this brings me to another question you might be able to help me with.  As I understand it each aircraft was loaded onto the launch cradle below decks by crane and then raised to the flightdeck and pushed into position:-

    So why is it mentioned that the cradles have separate lifts to raise them to the flight deck?

    I'm confused 🤔 but that don't take much! Maybe the intention was to position the aircraft over the cradle lifts and marry the 2 together then?

     

    Spend last night weathering the wooden deck and quite pleased with the result, hopefully post some pics later.

    With plenty of scope to scratchbuild I will be making use of the 3D printers I have and already produced a better version of the anchor:-

    In an ideal world the carrier deck will be populated and with the 3D printer I can produce as many crew as I need, not much to find online for free but at only around 5mm high not much detail is required.

    So that has brought the build log up to date.  Next on my to-do list is finish the hanger deck and populate before closing the top.

     

    Hopefully more updates in the not too distant future.

    I've just got to the point of putting my first wooden planking on.

    The intention is to have a water diorama so before I painted the hull I prepared a base:-

    As you can see part of the water dio will have a U-Boat on guardian duty and give a good sense of scale to the massive ship.

    Smaller projects as part of the build include the collection of lifeboats and launches:-

    I'm intending for the diorama to depict see trials of new carrier aircraft so the majority will be in the hanger.  The 109 seems just about the most unlikely of carrier bourne aircraft with narrow and weak undercarriage, but then again so does the Spit/Seafire I guess.

    Evening all,

     

    Been a while since I graced the BM site and posted some progress builds of models so here is first for about 8 years!

     

    So the DKM Graf Zeppelin, a fascinating 'what-if' which piqued my interest after see the infamous model of Hyan So Kim https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bX5bU2_HLCM .  I'm no ship builder but it looked an interesting project so got hold of the Trumpeter 1/350 Zepp along with the Infinity detail set, I toyed with getting the much more comprehensive Mk.1 set but with supply issues and availability  the Infinity set is plenty for me.

    The build is about 2 weeks in and I've managed to get the hull together and using the splinter scheme that Trumpeter proposes looks good so went with that, nothing is right or wrong, accurate or inaccurate as the beast never even put to sea in anger.

    In the timeline I'm modelling the Zepp to have undertaken a few forays into the North Atlantic to harass convoys so will be a little beaten about.  I've only started the weathering to the hull and with filters will blend everything in further down the line.  I'm intending to have the midship lift dropped to show the hanger deck with the original intention of dropping this down to the lower hanger deck, but I fear that nothing will be seen 2 levels down.  So for now I've started to detail the hanger deck before adding folded aircraft and equipment.

    1/350 Minicraft Academy Titanic

    Great start there.

     

    I had started the same build way back in 2008  with the intention of lighting her up etc

    For whatever reason this build got shuffled down the 'to-do' pile and eventually yesterday I blew the dust off the box and it's now on the bench.  This was prompted by ordering the Trumpeter 1/200 Titanic yesterday and as I have a while to wait for its arrival I thought the Minicraft kit could be made into a wreck model to sit under the Trumpy kit.  So much scratchbuilding ahead and I recently got hold of a 3d resin printer

    So when I get a usable 3d file I can print of the anchor I can send one to you.  I'm drawing the boilers and engine for me to print and use on the wreck model, but still getting my head around the software right now!🤨

    An EPIC build Mr Nut.  Been following in the wings for all this time and have to say the end results of your hard work are clear to see, well done and thanks for sharing your work.  

     

    Strange to think the build has taken this long that modelling has evolved during its build to incorporate 3D printing as a practical part of modern modelling.  I too have just bought an ANYCUBIC printer and your results are an inspiration.  Of the few prints I've done it seems the build plate requires leveling after every print, is that right?

    I'm intending to scratch from plasticard with formers and filler probably skin with thin plasticard sheet.  I envisage a shiney metal finish so some foiling ahead!

     

    Yes I will start a WiP when it's underway, just have to scale some drawings up.

    Shorts PD.17 Lifting platform

    Thx for your comments guys.  This will be a future project and have to decide what scale.

     

    The Short PD.17 Lifting Platform

    Length 1/72=325mm or 1/48=489mm

    Span 1/72=199mm or 1/48=298mm

     

    I'm really a 1/32 builder but even the 1/48 model might struggle for shelf space so I might have to bite the bullet and go for 1/72.

     

    I am aware the RB.108 did appear and in fact powered both Short SC.1 aircraft, 5 engines in each.  In fact my father lived in Idmiston at the end of Boscombe Down runway during the exciting 50's and 60's and witnessed many prototypes in action.

    Yes so all that expense and wind tunnel testing did aid the magnificent TSR2 which saved the British aircraft industry......... oh........ no that didn't actually happen did it !

    Shorts PD.17 Lifting platform

    Hi all,

     

    I have a quick question.

     

    I recently discovered the remarkable Shorts PD.17 lifting platform from the 1960's, a vertical take-off platform allowing a fighter/interceptor to be carried vertically before releasing the aircraft once forward flight had been achieved .

    Like something from Thunderbirds, but I wonder if anyone has seen a model of this combination out there?  Looks like a great scratchbuild project......

    The lifting platform alone had 56 lift engines! If the aircraft release sounded fraught then recovery included aircraft and platform matching speeds then 'simply' landing on the platform!!!

    Personally I think its a crackers idea but hey it was desperate times and sometimes the obscure seems to make perfect sense.

    The EE P.17B would have been the ride of the poor unfortunate RAF pilot.

     

    Needless to say the project was cancelled but a great what-if.

    Ju52 desert camo scheme

    Thanks guys all very helpful info, knew I should ask here first :)

     

    To elaborate a little this is part of a 2 ship commission build, and the request was to produce a desert scheme similar to the one shown below:-

    I realise this one is again a warbird (tailwheel giveaway?) but I quite like the scheme although detail photos are a little scarce online.

    Ju52 desert camo scheme

    I'm looking to build a 1/72 Ju52/3m in desert North Africa scheme and like the look of the image below:-

    IJA Ho-Ni Colours?

    After some advice guys.

     

    I have to repaint a japanese Ho-Ni for a friend in 3 colour camo and hope you can help with the colours I need.  

    It should look something like this when finished:-

    Any idea what the 3 colours I need, preferably Tamiya but open to other options.  I bought the Vallejo early IJA set but none of them seem to match the light colour, nearer Tamiya Buff or Desert Yellow really.

     

    Any help appreciated.
