  1. After grumping about for a bit, the meaphorical clouds lifted & I had a go at the mottling. It's not 100% what I had in mind, but it is growing on me. I fixed up my port wing splat, but due to a clogged nozzle there are a couple of splatters in the mottling on the other side (so I'll keep them hidden for now ). That'll need to be tidied up before the gloss coat, but that's no biggie. Chris
  2. Really lovely job Fred, I think brush painting either of those colours probably isn't for the faint hearted, but you've pulled it off well. Nice to see the office occupied too! Chris
  3. Something like this - I guess it's just me then....
  4. Lovely work so far Dave. It's a positive tiddler compared to the B-1 (And this shot of it without the wings makes me think of a Bronze Age sword. Funny the way my mind works ) Chris
  5. I masked off the sides with blutack sausages, and put a few small blobs of blutack on for the mottling. The results were disappointing. I hadn't achieved the soft edge that I wanted, and the resulting 'mottle' just looked weird. So with a steady hand I went back over the edges freehand, as well as erasing the mottle. It had been a laborious process doing the masking, so I was already feeling a bit deflated. Then while I was concentrating on getting a fine feather to soften the edges, I managed to tip the airbrush too far over and sloshed RLM76 paint over the port wing & engine. Cue much gnashing of teeth. I've put the airbrush down for today, as I can feel myself getting frustrated with things. Better to take a short break and come back when I'm feeling a bit more chipper, than end up stuffing it all up when I try to put the mottle on Chris
  6. That's not a bad idea John. We'll see how long it takes me to finish the bird itself first though! Today I learned that not all paints cure as quickly as Tamiya acrylics. I bought a pot of Gunze RLM81 and proceeded to spray up the rest of the splinter. The coverage was nice and even, although I'm not keen on the 'semi' gloss finish. Unfortunately, despite leaving it an hour to dry, I've managed to put a thumbprint on the spine of the aircraft. I'll see if it polishes out when dry. Next up (once she's fully dry!) - the tricky bit of the belly & mottle Chris
  7. Gorgeous work so far, Krow. Keep it up! Chris
  8. Metallic bits masked off, RLM02 nose cone done, RLM82 done. Normally I'd do the belly colour first, but because of the way I'll need to over spray the splinter camo, the splinter comes first. I've also tried post shading instead of pre-shading, for a change I'll let this dry overnight, then mask off & do the RLM81 Chris
  9. Sean, see if you can get hold of a scalpel & blades. It may sound like overkill, but the tape shouldn't tear if you're using a fresh scalpel blade to cut it. Although the harness that you have here looks pretty good to me, better than most of my efforts of using tape! Chris
  10. Dave, I think I've made the same assumption... Well, I'll have cross that bridge when I come to it (or more likely fill, sand & paint that particular bridge) Chris
  11. Not a very interesting update, but I find it helps me to keep momentum if I keep documenting the build! I like to give things a silver undercoat to help with chipping, but I was going to skip it on this one and try painting chips in using citadel acrylics, as they brush paint nicely. Then I had a bit of brain-fade and ended up spraying it silver anyway, I think I may have been on autopilot. Sprayed tamiya flat aluminium, except for some of the nose panels which is in Citadel Runefang Steel. You can't really see the difference in the picture, but the metallic flakes of the citadel paint are a lot more fine. Canopy masked with Parafilm M & attached. Next up, let the top coat commence! Chris
  12. Nice one Steve. I agree, the panzer grey looks better than the previous scheme, it was a little indistinct. Are you doing the chimera in the same scheme? Chris
  13. The conclusion I've come to is that it must be something they put in the beer. that's the only explanation that makes sense to me. Arkady, you make it look so straightforward, but your results are always stunning. Keep up the good work Chris
  14. I've blu tacked the gun covers on for the duration of the painting, hence the wonky nose. Primer is on. I'm using Mr Surfacer 1200, so I make sure I'm outside when I'm spraying so the breeze carries the over-spray away from my lungs. I didn't count on the strong winds that just blew through my back garden though. Talk about an exercise in frustration! I really thought the bloody thing was going to take off by itself at one point! Next up, masking & mounting the clear bits! Chris
  15. Awesome job Pat, the first pic makes it look like the real thing Chris
  16. I'm sorry ghb180658 if you think I'm MOD bashing, but I was simply stating what I'd heard, hence my follow up question. I don't have an axe to grind, or any agenda here, just curiosity about the situation. Chris
  17. That's a belter! I've enjoyed watching you build her. Chris
  18. Well mrvr6, (may I call you 6? ) Tamiya don't tend to have exact RLM equivalents. I use Tamiya paints, and if you're not too worried about having exact matches, you can usually use a single colour, ligtened or darkened with black or white to get a rough match. There are lots of places out there that show formulas for making up the 'correct' colours. Some of them seem very precise, but you can usually get a good match with just two or three colours mixed. Have a google around, I just did and found the following formulas from here http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/colorcharts/stuff_eng_colorcharts_germany.htm: RLM 74 - XF-27 70% + XF-19 30% RLM 75 - XF-54 + XF-51 RLM 76 - XF-23 60% + XF-2 40% Hope this help Chris
  19. I'd heard that the MOD had basically shut down any investigation at the time because it happened on MOD land. I'm not sure how it works with the civvy police getting involved - do they have any jurisdiction over incidents on MOD property? Chris
  20. HI Fuad, I enjoy reading about the history of the examples that you build, and the description of the model will be useful for people who build the same model. So no, you are not doing anything wrong! Keep building these wonderful models! Chris
  21. Cheers guys. Jason, I'm doing the kit scheme. The U5 was a prototype of which I believe only one was built. I haven't seen any references that show the aircraft in question, so who knows the veracity of the instructions! It looks like it'll be a challenging scheme with the combination of mottling & hard edges, but I'll give it a go! Chris
  22. I thought I'd get a shift on, only 4 weeksleft of the group build, and the rate I'm going it won't get finished. I did end up having to slap a bit of putty on my handiwork, as the gun deck & all the cockpit gubbins meant that the two halves of the fuselage were literally busting at the seams in places. I've got the main assembly done now, I have to say that the fit was pretty darn good, very little fettling was needed. I had a small disaster as I was putting the engines on, I dropped the whole lot on the floor Despite bouncing end over end a few times it all held together but the radio inside the fuselage popped free and started rattling around. I managed to extract it through the gap behind the seat, that's it sat in front of the starboard wing. I don't think I'm going to try to put it back in place, as to be honest very little of the interior can be seen though the little access hatch. I also think that if I'm poking about with tweezers through the back of the cockpit I'm more than likely to trash the seat or other bits of the cockpit in the process. Next stage: primer, and then no doubt more seam work! Chris
  23. What an entrance! All of those are wonderful, it's hard to pick a favourite but it must be the Lightning, I think. Your figure painting skills are really very good too, and they really add a bit of life to the dioramas. Welcome! Chris
  24. Seriously nice work. It looks well used, but not weathered to the point of distraction, if you know what I mean Chris
  25. Very impressive so far Pablo, especially given what you had to start with. I think you need to tidy up the slight white overspray behind the oil cooler, but apart from that I can't find anything to criticize! Chris
