  1. I'm no P-51 expert, but having built one, the Airfix kit seems to be to be fine - crude by modern standards, but the fit of the main parts is okay and the shape appears fairly accurate (no doubt I'll be flamed for saying that!). The canopy is not great (rather thick) - but then you won't be needing that if you're converting it to a Reno racer. I would recommend the Airfix one simply because it's both easy to find and inexpensive (certainly compared to the Trumpeter one!).

    Enjoy!

Having seen, what had done Trumpeter with tailplanes on Spit V.b in 32md scale (if I remember correctly), I love even more the old crude kits like old hasegawa...

  2. Interesting. I'm about to list an Eduard Tempest on Ebay. Some time ago I started the Tempest V kit, unaware that it was a limited-run kit and a bit tricky for the inexperienced such as myself. I have painted the cockpit in a modest fashion (probably cursory by the standards here), assembled the fuselage halves, done some filling sanding but not yet enough, cocked up a bit that should protrude from the rear of the air scoop (a moment of madness - I cut it off!), and painted the wheel wells. Nearly all the other parts are on the sprues, with instructions and aftermarket decals by Aeromaster, Storms in the Sky #6 (post-WW2). I have no idea what this is worth but if anyone cares to make me an offer...

(hope this is OK - should I have put it in "for sale"?)

Be brave - finish it. :deadhorse:

  3. Inaccurate fuselage? The Italaeri kit was praised as having the finest fuselage in 1/72. It had its problems - prop, spinner and radiators come to mind, but not the fuselage.

    Dear Graham,

with all respect 2U, only totally blind can praise Italeri Spits (1:72) fuselage. Missing lines around the wing joint, terrible tailplanes, surpricing nose, unusable canopy, etc. It's simpler to count what Italeri did well (can't remember), instead of counting mistakes.

Much cheaper way to VI would be thru old Airfix with SMER Spitfire VI (rebox of heller V with resin parts for VI), at least, it would lead to much better VI in terms of shape and size. Another way for brave ones might be AZ's offering, though should be kept in mind, it is limited run.

  4. The paints used were xtracrylix (which I have learned the hard way should be applied over a coat of primer!) I have one other pic:

    CIMG4015.jpg

It was something of an opportunistic build, I was ripped off by an unscrupulous seller on eBay who sold me the aeroclub 21 with a mangled fuselage. I replaced that with one from hannants to build my 21 and grafted the damaged tail onto my 22. Must admit I do prefer the XIV style tail to the later spiteful tail.

With regards to the seafire, a XIX nose would not be correct for a seafire XV as this and the XVII had the earlier/shorter single stage griffon nose like the spitfire XII. You could maybe use the xtrakit spit XII if you can get hold of a cheap one?

Really, looks superb... BTW... Isn't xtracrylics just Czech Agama range, specially packaged and branded for Hannants? If so, then it's obvious, why it didn't work without primer...

    Back to kitbashing...

I'm aware of the fact, that XIX is double stage Griffon. My refferal to Sword XII reflects, in spite the box is Xtrakit's, the mold is made by Sword. My idea is, that as I grafted tail of XIX to AZ's 22, I have incomplete Griffon fusselage. Therefore, cutting nose of IX.c, and adding the shortened (according to XV or XVII) nose of XIX would give me usable base of XV.

Another idea occurs - cutting the nose off IX and adding the nose of XIX would give me the XIV prototype with thin rudder... ;)

  5. Looking good so far, I built a model of PK312 myself in 48th by grafting an aeroclub 21 tail onto the airfix kit:

I am watching this one closely, keep up the good work!

Very inspirative pic! Have any more? Paints used?

Thanks for kind words, but primarilly I have to finish both of my XII's (clipped and EN221), then to build that damn seafire... I must admit, that I'm thinking about cross kitting the front part of XIX, that's unused after surgery, with IX.c... I find the Sword's XII enjoyable, but somehow... Tiring.

  6. Not sure if this should go here or in the research section... about to start the USN F4U Corsair build for the OOB GB and need 2 colours clearing up

    1) the good old interior green - Tamiya paint call out does not give a colour for this (mixture of blue & yellow paints) - I think I have seen humb=rol 151 quoted in the past - is that a good choice

    2) the all over blue colour - the Tamiya calls out AS8 but cant find the humbrol equivalent (it doesnt come up in the colour converter application i use)... is humbrol 181 a good option for this?

    thanks in advance guys

    Rob

Various shades of interior green I got used to mix from Hu:81 and Hu:33 in various ranges.

  7. Of course, 22 not 21, now I see it. I noticed the tail transplant, and from the angle you photographed, I saw it as having the high back fuselage. It just goes to prove that the human eye sees what it expects to see.

    Little progress on XII:

    Tail planes on...

Nose glued... A little nasty job...

And how does look the cross kitted Mk.22 proto... Wing just dry stuck to fusselage.

  8. Hi,

I'm thinking of getting the new HobbyBoss Ta 152C-0 kit, has anyone built it and if so did it go together well?

    Thanks.

Kit has certain shape problems, fortunately, solvable with some putty and sand paper. Also you will need to rescribe the bottom part of wing.

  9. The XII is looking very good from here.

The 21 looks to be coming together well too. What did you take The tail from - a Fujimi kit?

    Not 21, but 22. ;)

And the tail - it's Airfix. Looks a little bit small, but fit is acceptable even with no putty. On the bottom, I had to add some sheet styrene, but really, nothing to be afraid of.

Just an explanation, I made this surgery in attempt to build Spit Mk.22, PK312 or PK315, as they are othh documented pretty well, having smaller (like XIV) rudder for certain period. Currently, this particular project was suspended, as I got extra fusselage from AZ Spit XVIII/XIV, and the fit 22/24 wing is quite promising.

    BTW, getting the cowling together...

  10. From in progress pics it looked sometimes as very dirty build, byt the finished kit pics are unexpectedly good. wEll done!!!

Looks very neat indeed- and a super finish for a brush. I know what you mean about the fit- it is so tight that even a coat of paint can effect the parts clicking together properly. On my airfix spitfire I found the tailwheel was such a tight fit it tried to split the fuselage joint- I think this was down to the thickness of paint on the two parts adding a fraction of a mm each!

re the aerial- what did you use? If it is plastic thread or sprue you should be able to tension it by holding it over a recently extinguished candle.

    Will

Tailwheel is nothing against the damn clear part...
