Valentine Mk.I and Mk.II - 1:35 - AFV Club
IanW replied to Vally G's topic in Work in Progress - Armour
Hi Adam, Shame about the Vallejo primer. I use it all the time and have had the 'pebbly' finish once or twice, but never bad - and it disappeared after just spraying over it as per normal. A tip I read just reently was to thin Vallejo with their airbrush cleaner... I do this now, even for the primer, and it has reduced airbrush blockages bigtime, so maybe worth a crack? Cheers, Ian -
Hi, That helps emormously, thanks you!

Hi, I'm just completing my 1/35 Accurate Armout Stolly and need to fit a whip aerial. Could anyone please provide me the length a Clansman whip antennae should be when mounted on the Stolly? Thanks very much, Ian

That is simply amazing work! -
Great weathering/chipping effects! There is something wrong with your posts though - no commentary alongside to say how you achieve such great effects!

Cheers guys - Jack, funnily enough, I thought after I looked at the Matilda pics that a dark yellow would have been a better modulator! If I get enthused enough, I might try again... although, after washing with oils, the colour usually darkens up a bit. The NZ Matildas seemed to have very weathered side skirts, with very light bottoms and heavily stained tops/access holes - I'm guessing those skirts lowers at least must have got banged around pretty hard in training. Anyway, now to make up some QA Sqn decals! Cheers for now, Ian -

And here is the Matilda, lightly oversprayed with the SCC2 mix described above... I see what you mean about the 'pinkish tint' Adam - the left over paint residue in my mixing jar was very pinnk in tone. And here a a few pics of the Matilda after highlighting with the same mix, with two drops of white extra added... sun had gone in by this stage! And the Matilda with the Valentine turret to show the difference between the KG3 and SCC2 mixes... Let me know what you think - I am a total newbie when it comes to British tank colours! Cheers, Ian -

A bit more progress today - thought I'd post up pics of the Valentine turret just painted using the mix discussed above. I have tried to minimise any photoshopping to keep the colour as true as what I see. The pics were taken in natural, direct light... Cheers for now, Ian -

Lol! Yes, I'm looking forward to trying that mix on the Vally turret soon! Am assuming you mean this? (snip from elsewhere on the site...) Mike Starmer, grognard and maven par excellence of WWII British vehicle camouflage and markings, has come up with a mix for Vallejo ModelColor paints to replicate the early-war base vehicle colour, Khaki Green #3. It consists of 1 part 822 (German Camo Black Brown), 1 part 888 (Olive Grey) and 7 parts 921 (English Uniform). And I thought the SCC2 I mixed did look similar to the Churchill shown on this page... http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234913729-british-ww2-tank-colors/ And, hey, by the time you pre-shade, base coat, lighten, wash, filter, weather, and weather some more... you get where I'm going, I'm sure! -
Very nice! And great photography-lovely rich colours!

Thanks for the reply, Simmerit! I've got the AA Ferret coming, so will see how that builds... soon to post the Stolly up, the kit needed a bit of cleaning up but went together impressively well. Keep up the great work! -

Planning on using Vallejo colours 3pts 871 + 2pts 873 basic colour. I tried this mix for a little Tamiya Tilly I'm playing with and thought it looked ok... but keen to hear if you tried the same and thought too pink, I'm pretty much a newcomer to these things! -
Brilliant work- nice one!

A bit more work on the Matilda and Valentine... Undercoated... And a bit of pre-shading... just trying this out, I used to paint my armour models black overall before the base coat, so will see how this goes when I spray the base coat of SCC 2. Have largely finished building the Valentine turret, the hull is waiting for the Valentine III release from AFV Club, so I can use the wheels. All additional turret details are basically a direct copy from Adam's awesome builds here... http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234954703-valentine-mki-and-mkii-135-afv-club/ so thanks Adam! Brilliant work - crop that last photo and I'd think it was real! -
Re thinning Vallejo paints - I've been using their own brand of paint thinner and had no end of airbrush clogging problems. I read on another thread about thinning with their airbrush cleaner and now add a few drops to the paint mix, flows beautifully and much less clogging.

Thanks Shar - about time someone did then, eh?!

Hi guys, Does anyone know if any company makes this ship in 1/350 at all? I know of Airfix's 1/600 of course and I think there is a resin kit in 1/700, but 1/350? Thanks very much, Ian

That was quick! Thanks Pete!

Hi, Can someone please remind me what the antennae installation (a horizontal piece with 2 verticals attached) on both sides of some Lancs nose's was for? I seem to recall it was a landing aid, but just can't find the info anywhere! There is one fitted on this Lanc here... http://www.skytamer.com/1.2/2002/2399.jpg Thanks very much, Ian

That looks great, nothing wrong with any of it! And have copied your photos to my references so I can try and do half as well if I model a no.11 one day!
