  4. You can find the same picture in "Farnborough - 100 Years of British Aviation" by Peter J. Cooper, Midland 2006. "Manchester I L7276 had arrived during June 1941 for various tests with with Aero Flight. Taking over from Heyford III K5184, the Manchester was launched from the DCTO track on 8th September 1942, landing back on the main runway. It is seen here in position on the track, probably the day before the launch. Despite its success, the concept was eventually abandone. The Manchester was struck off charge in October 1943 Photo FAST Collection" From the book: "DCTO means Direction-Controlled Take -Off, the system was commenced during 1939 on Jersey Brow, with a long track being built across the airfield south-westerly direction along the old "mile straight". THis was a proposed development for launching large multi-engined bomber aircraft without the ned for runways. The track was nearly a mile (1472 yards) in length and was built like a very wide gauge (22ft 9in) railway, with rwin eails either side. It was completed in 1940. The system was first tested by a Heyford III K5184 ... Although proven, the DCTO concept, originated for the Norwegian Campaign, was not proceded with and was abandoned. Vestiges of this track can still be sen today..." modelldoc
