thin and runny isnt it? I found that with the Extracolour Lichen Green, perhaps more than with the NATO Dark Green as I saw with my 72 sqn HC2 (You aren't doing 601 then?) Actually found that the way the dark green scheme faded in service that the Revell 78 cockpit grey green came quite close to the Glossy Extracolours for the Lichen Green if you dont want to go "Extra" with yours. Worth a look on a mock-up before you commit maybe. I have yet to decide whether the Rescue scheme will benefit from the fabled pre-shading Some time this week I think for the decision Paul sorry about the hi-jack mate bill

I think their inherent "heaviness" is what gives me so much pleasure when I take one and refine it I did this with an old clunky Frog Typhoon Not as wildly detailed as Nobby's but still lots of fun to "put right-er", thinning trailing edges and making the new canopy and doing work inside the 'pit and wheel wells

Looks like Rob P will be beating me with his yellow baby then! XT601 as shown earlier in this thread will be mine (unless Rob tells us that is the one he is finshing off ) Just finished detailing the cockpit, proper seats, pedals and linked collectives and roof consoles with rotor brake handle. Painting begins this week after canopy masking. Paul by paying attention to the detail points yours is getting my Wessex of the week award mate, well done

Sorry Michael I did see that but had keyboard blindness when I wrote it er Did dad put the bombs on? This was the second Airfix (thus the second of anyone's) kit I built after Golden Hind.

That takes me back Built that in "my early years" Did you put the bombs on her? Thanks for building it, all models deserve to be built bill

As you said, that's more like it Looks far better like this Nice one Paul I am using that Modeldecals sheet for my SAR2, lovely choices on there

Anticipation building nicely Paul, cheers.

very nice Lovely work -
Making good progress as you say Jason Speed isn't my thing these days, unlike the olden days when I might put three models a month on the competition tables. I am about 4 slow months into my next Westland Wessex model, with another month's worth to go... I don't know if you have tried it but when I used glue as a filling medium back in the day I would "pack it out" with a little talc powder too, which reduced its agressiveness on bare plastic, and made a better medium to sand down afterwards. I haven't found any chemical answer to removing old glue globules though, the trusty needle file is my tool of choice for that task. bill

Nobby Please be careful when you charge the cartridges for those guns mate. Even in small quantities cordite can be dodgy stuff! OK only kidding (it's actually very stable in small quantities) but the incredible detail you are imparting makes it look as if real home made ammo is a viable prospect The guns look better than I have seen on any model so far these 64 years, slight exaggeration of barrel's diameters in this scale are to be expected after all. Yours do NOT look oversize at all, it's amazing work. I am wandering off ever so slightly depressed myself, how the hell did I ever find myself in such amazing company? bill -
my gob, she is smacked! I knew when I first saw this wonderful machine being modelled so well that this would be good You wouldnt believe how good it feels to be proved right it's a fabulous model (perhaps someone ought to bring a show to you, you really deserve a wide audience for your skills with this)

Looks like a great start. I intend to learn a lot about "etch" from this. Dont worry if things go a bit "scratchy" we will all be along with you, helping or hinting. There is always a way to get outta jail in modelling. And anyway, it has to be worth doing, its a Beaufighter!

Waiting with 'bated breath Paul. What we saw last time looks very nice.

Well mate You dunnit! And she didn't make you tear out all your hair Looks great, happy I could help a little bit See you soon I hope bill -
With due respect to Colin I'd think she was close enough in general for a nice model to ensue. As I tend to use a combination of sources it becomes natural to wonder how close published plans actually are And using my favourite "Frog" mouldings as benchmark I'd say that the 4+'s MARK1 plans are very good, generally if the model "eyes-up" with photos and the plans I'd say it was good enuff! Much of this moulding is nice however with the tail handling grips moulded in too. Shame 'bout the window frames which are flush on a Wessex

I have been away for a very long time, so there may have been. I think I can probably stretch to making the new bits though, was it a glass nose and a radome mostly and a blunter rear end? (quite like mine own)
-
Great, very useful pictures Rich It seems I should have streamlined my tailwheel strut a bit/lot more I have a fancy for a mark 1 too at some time
-
Paul I would have that like a shot And that Lightning Waco Kid Which reminds me I still have ALL of a Frog/Novo Lightning in a room elsewhere in Perdu Manor Usually only see books but in the light of this thread I shall examine the "toyey" corner too, next time I accompany She Who into a Charriddeee Shoppe

Hi Jason I just had a look in my transfer/decal (I'm old and old fashioned ) folder and have found that sheet I am going to scan it so PM if or when... I should have thought about that Texas is another place business I also remember dr_gn saying he'd had trouble removing elderly silver paint, there must be something in its composition that resists removal. So you may still need to rub gently 'til plastic again Good luck bill
-
Jason you seem to be a man after me own heart (could be enough to stop you, hope it doesnt) I have just stripped the old paint from a Matchbox Wessex I was given, part built and fully painted. I tried the submerged in brake fluid for a couple of days but it only wrinkled the paint What did work was a cheap hand squeezed pump bottle of Tesco Oven Cleaner, it not only dissolved the paint but also got under the decals ad drifted them away too.(didnt dissolve them though) I'd be mad enough to make it into a Turret Demon, partly because I love the squadron markings, but the Oirish one is cool too (And I think I have a set of Scale Aircraft Modelling decals for the Irish Air Force somewhere) have fun, I will enjoy it with you
-
Looks far more like it now Paul Window framing is better too, when you look at Wessex pictures there is little more than panel lining to show where the "push out" sections of the window frames are. Beginning to look like a true Wessex, looking at these pictures there're some great moulding efforts on the upper fuselage hump venting by Italeri. With you all the way bill
-
That is the perfect modelling picture set Model SHOULD hang from ceilings, absolutely and for authenticity yours are dead right You really should be able to see the strings (apologies to Smithy but really mate, this is a proper ceiling jobby) I kinda sorta think I might just have been responsible for similar sights in properties in and around Brum for many years thanks for sharing them extra thanks for bringing up a lad "proper-like"
-
A good evenings work then cheers bill

Something I meant to mention on seeing Don's great pictures Look at the nose filter on the shot looking head on with the orange cover in place How on earth can anyone looking at that think the Italeri, Revell or Matchbox ever looked at one and MEASURED one? Don that one is magic mate Bill Thinks .... need to add steps to oleo legs must remember, must rememb...
