Hi She's finished - RFI thread is here. I finished her with a quick wash of W&N Raw Umber followed by a coat of W&N Satin Varnish. I decided not to apply any exhaust staining as per my references. The worst part of the build was the poor fit of the windscreen. -
Hi My old mould Airfix BBMF Hurricane is finished. I built this in parallel with the new mould Sea Hurricane IIc which was my entry for the Battle of the Atlantic GB. I am building a collection of BBMF aircraft, which this one will now join. The rest of the Flight is here and here. The kit goes together well and is only let down by the raised detail and the fit of the windscreen, but that could be put down to my ability I suppose! Here she is with the other BBMF Hurricane models. And finally a quartet of Hurricanes, including the other two BBMF models and the Sea Hurricane that I built in parallel.

Hi I have finished my Sea Hurricane! I applied couple of washes of W&N Raw Umber, followed by a coat of W&N Galeria Satin Varnish to seal everything in. I Have shown the hook extended and have chosen not to add any staining from the cannon or exhausts. More pictures here All in all, a fun build of a Hurricane in different clothes! -
Hi I have finished my Airfix Sea Hurricane IIc. A nice, quick build that I may tweak with exhaust staining and radio aerial at some point. I decided to show the arrestor hook in the lowered position, to show that she is a Sea Hurricane. This is probably inaccurate, but let's say she is undergoing maintenance! My reference pictures don't seem to show any staining on the wings from cannon fire, so I resisted the temptation!

Thanks Daz. I am now waiting for the satin varnish to dry. Hopefully I will be able to put up pictures of the finished article this evening. -

Hi Steve Thanks very much for your kind words. I like both of these Hurris, they both fit well but they both have their drawbacks! The old mould has raised detail, and the canopy shape doesn't look quite right to me and the new one has the latest Airfix over done engraved detail, which still looks overscale despite a few coats of paint. Having said that, I buils for fun and they both look like Hurricanes to me! Thanks for that, Chris - I wasn't aware of it's lineage. -

Hi The decals are on and the canopy is resting in place. I still need to glue on the exhausts, pitot and landing light lenses. I had to reconstruct the radio mast, because the top part snapped off as I was removing it from the sprue. I plan to do some very light weathering followed by a coat of W&N Galeria Matt Varnish. -

Thanks Jason. I don't have an airbrush, and I have found that the Halfords White Plastic Primer is an ideal top coat, if you don't need a high-gloss finish. -

Hi The decals are on (not without trauma!) and the canopy is resting in place. I still need to glue on the exhausts, pitot and landing light lens. Unfortunately, both serial numbers and both "Q" letters semi dinintegrated in the water, but I have managed to salvage them. I plan to do some very light weathering followed by a coat of W&N Galeria Satin Varnish. Here she is with the parallel-build new mould Airfix Hurricane. -

Hi I have now brush painted the camouflage on her nose over the Halfords White Primer, which I an keeping as the top coat. I have painted the exhausts with my home brew of Humbrol Metalcote Gunmetal mixed with Humbrol 55 Bronze and I have painted the cannon Humbrol Metalcote Gunmetal and then buffed them slightly. I applied strips of white-painted black decal sheet to the canopy. Next step is a coat or two of Klear followed by the decals. -

Hi I have now brush painted her and managed to snap off the moulded on tail wheel, which has disappeared into a parallel universe to be replaced with a Spitfire IX wheel from one of the kits we built at Spitfix 2009 at Hendon. I have painted the exhausts with my home brew of Humbrol Metalcote Gunmetal mixed with Humbrol 55 Bronze. I have painted the cannon Humbrol Metalcote Gunmetal and then buffed them slightly. I applied strips of painted black decal sheet to the canopy. Next step is a coat or two of Klear followed by the decals. And finally a comparison shot with the new mould IIc. -

Hi Florin This GB will be in 2012. Would you like to join us? -
I'm in, probably with a Revell 1/72 GR1.

Hi Madmonk I don't own an airbrush either, so I do most of my painting with a brush, using Halfords aerosols for tricky colours like white and black. The arrestor mechanism was a hairy moment for me, as I like quick, straight from the box builds and get nervous cutting chunks out of a perfectly good kit! I don't have a razor saw, so I used a set of side cutters for the thickest plastic fore and aft and then scored the rest with my scalpel. It is not perfect, but then I am not a perfectionist!! -
Hi I have decided to do no more on this build, as I have become distracted by other things! The decals were OK, but not up to modern standards - the "City of Lincoln" crest curled and then disintegrated, requiring some major surgery and one of the red lines on the underside broke up, but was beyond surgery! I applied some subtle streaking with a Raw Umber wash and then applied a coat of W&N Acrylic Satin Varnish. I might apply another coat in due course. I am thinking of adding a red anti-collision light to the top of the fuselage at some point. All in all, not a bad kit for it's age and it certainly looks like a Lancaster, which is all I want. It will be interesting to compare her with the new Revell example that I plan to finish as "Phantom of the Ruhr", also in BBMF guise for this Group Build.

I have decided to do no more on "Mickey". I applied some subtle weathering, as the BBMF aircraft always appear so pristine. I might add a red anti-collision light to the top of the fuselage at some point. -

Hi Only a little sanding was required before the Halfords Grey Primer. The next step is to do some remedial sanding and then apply a coat of Humbrol 165 Medium Sea Grey to the underside and dip the canopy in Klear. And here is a comparison of the old and new. -

Hi Severus, I am reserving judgement at the moment, although the engraved detail on the new kit is definitely overdone. -

Hi I have now glued on the wings, rudder and tailplanes. I have deflected the rudder and drooped the elevators slightly in line with my picture of the Shuttleworth Collection's example above. I am now going to sand the various join lines before applying the Halfords White Plastic Primer. -

Hi All I wonder if anyone will be completing this for the GB? As you would expect from Hasegawa, the price is a little eye-watering, but it looks like a great set!
