  1. I see that the December issue of Airfix Model World has an article on the Hunter F6 model. It looks an excellent kit, and I look forward to getting mine in due course. However, I see that the kit wingtips are wrong as they do not straighten out as on the real aircraft - nor is that shown on the lovely box art. OK it is a matter of a few seconds to rectify this with a sanding stlck but in my opinion Airfix have shot themselves in the foot by making this error. But having said that none of the other Hunter kit manufacturers have got the wingtips correct either!

  2. Can any Beau aficionados tell me whether the Beau TFX as used in Operation Firedog Malaya retained their 6 x .303 machine guns in the wings or not. Some references say they did not, yet the Airfix kit box implies that they did by the location on the muzzle covers. I am puzzled!

    Cheers,

  3. I have just received this kit - it really is very good indeed and offers alternative noses and tailplanes. However I particularly want to finish mine in the mid grey/back schemes as used by 45 Squadron in Malaya in the late 40s/early 50s. Those were equipped with a strike camera mounted just behind the pilots cockpit - and much to my sorrow this is not included in the kit. So my question is how big were these fairings so that I can make one - are there any drawings that I can use? Any advice/help would be most welcome please.

    Thanks,

  4. I received my Scimitar today as well and have had a look at it. I too have rebagged the smaller pieces into a separate bag. The decals are not wonderful but I will use either the MA ones of those from the Dynavector kit. And one of the mainwheel legs is not quite right, but not a major problem. If you speak Spanish I am sure that the instructions will be good but I don't and will have to rely on the pix as necessary. But when you appreciate this is the work of a small part time team, it is an incredible achievement. So well done and many thanks for producing a Scimitar in 1/48 scale. Now for a Swift FR5?????

  5. Hi ForestFan,

I have just compared vol2 to vol3 and can see no major differences, although the paper in vol 3 may be more matt than in vol 2. The quality of paper seems much the same, and as far as I can see the photos in vol 3 are OK. The only comment I would make are that some of the colour photos  in the Flying Colours section are less than good, but the author has commented that age has affected the quality and colour fastness of some of the photos such as the photo of a 34 Sqdn Hunter F5, but hopes that this will not detract from their rarity and appeal. I can live with this and think that the book is excellent given the amount of information in it. Yes it is a large financial outlay but well worth it.

  6. I have just received volume 3 of Roger Lindsay's magnum opus Cold War Shield. This volume covers the Swift, Javelin , Hunter and early Lightning in RAF service. A bit expensive but what a wonderful book - truly excellent and includes photos of aircraft in second line service, such as a Pioneer with 118 Sqdn.  Highly recommended. Wouldn't  a 1/48 model of a Pioneer - and Twin Pioneer be wonderful?

  7. Hello Mr B,

Yes the instrument decal sheet nor film were the same shape as the instrument panel. In the end I used the decal and cut it to shape. I too only had 2 pe15 (rudder pedals) in my kit but have not used them - too small and you cannot see them anyway - but have used the kit rudder bars. I have filled the kit where necessary, particularly on the wing root/fuselage, and sanded them off. I primed the kit last evening but I am sure that it will need more filling. It looks like a Provost!

  8. I am slowly building my Provost (the RAF version) and agree that it does need a lot of filing and sanding to build the kit. In particular the coaming  above the instrument panel does not fit well, so I replaced that with a piece of thin card. Fortunately being a guide at Tangmere Military Aviation Museum I can look at the cockpit section we have there for guidance on the colour scheme - for example the box on the rear bulkhead is yellow - and fit.  It is now together and I am now in the initial filing and sanding phase. But it is the only Provost in 1/48 scale so thanks Mikro Mir!
