  1. I used 71.012 Dark Green, and 71.057 Black. with Valejo Gloss varnish over the top. I painted everything before adding the lenses, then glossed over after. So were you RHA then?

I've just noticed these from accurate armour, I may replace the ammo boxes for the GPMG on top of the turret.

should make a lot of difference to the detail.

Thanks, no I'm not ex services at all, the RHA option from the 2003 invasion of Iraq just stood out to me!

I've got those ammo boxes and the GPMG on the wish list for my buildalong with this

There's also this as an alternative the the AA GPMG live resin do an L7A2 which I think is the right type

  2. Like wise with the flying scholarship, my best flight was with an ex Bucc pilot who had done a stint with the RN aboard carriers. On getting in to the plane he asked how many hours I had done, it was a few by this point, so he decided his mission for the day was to make me air sick! He let me fly most of the flight including 9 loops one after another, I wasn't physically sick, but it was a close run thing. I flew pretty much right down to the end of finals then he took over and landed the bulldog like it was a Bucc on a carrier deck too!

  3. That brings back fond memories, I will never forget the 'jump, Johny, jump' video explaining how to calmly get out of the plane and hop off the trailing edge of the wing while it plummets to earth...

I also remember my first flight, which was my only one in a chippie before they swapped to Bulldogs, I could barely see over the IP and it rattled so hard I couldn't read the instruments.....

  4. So the Armour bug has well and truly bitten me now and I thought I'd share my next build as a WIP.

For now this will be just a placeholder, mainly as a shameless plea for reference material! We have just had our first child, in fact I'm still on paternity leave, so I don't expect to start for a couple of weeks or so and certainly don't expect to make quick progress!

The kit I will use will be the Trumpeter one

With some additional detail parts, 2 Eduard sets and the RB barrel, a must for the sagged boot over the base of the barrel.

Also the bison decals for the markings.

There is a lot of discussion about regarding the correct colour for British desert vehicles but I saw this and thought I'd give it a try

    http://www.migjimenez.com/en/real-colors/33-british-sand-yellow.html

I'm sure under weathering it'll be close enough.

Speaking of which I'm going to try some chipping back the the disruptive NATO camo underneath that's visible on these guns in the few photos I've found...

Finally I'm thinking of buying the black dog set for the AS-90 to add a little stowage, this one:

    http://www.armorama.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Reviews&file=index&req=showcontent&id=10599

It looks good, but I'm not sure how much of it is relevant for a gulf war gun...

Hopefully I'll be along with updates shortly...in the mean time any tips on building the kit, or better still good sources of reference for pictures of the guns in theatre would be greatly appreciated!

  5. From memory the stencils in the kit are either grey, for the 2 tone jets or black for the camo retirement scheme jet. The black ones are only applicable to the camo version, all of the grey jets carried low vis grey stencils. I'm not 100% sure if the MSG jets had the same shade of stencils as the camo grey/DSG jets, however I have found that the grey stencils blend into the camo grey paint, ie they are the same shade. This would probably mean you could use them on an MSG jet ok. If you look at the individual stencils that are present with some options, rather than the common ones, you'll see different shade stencils that go on the MSG panels to compare with.

As for the serials you ask about, Google those numbers and you'll find a definitive answer as you'll get plenty of images.

  6. The speed the oil wash dries at depends on how fast the solvent used evaporates. Hotter solvents tend to evaporate faster than the less aggressive ones, but you run the risk of damaging the underlying paint. Normally you would apply a wash over a gloss or satin surface anyway, which means you'd have to top coat with varnish. Also it's best to use complementory layers of paint and wash, ie oil or enamel washes over acrylic base (or the other way if you prefer), this avoids undesirable damage to paint from solvents in washes. You can of course use acrylic varnish layers as a barrier.

So the short answer is it's probably best to use an acrliyc Matt varnish over your finished parts to seal. Personally I suggest Windsor and Newton or Vallejo but that's up to you!

  7. I have read from various sources (including Tom Cooper) that the finish is varnish mixed with aluminium powder applied over the whole airframe, possibly with the exception of the exhaust areas. There maybe some variation in tone on certain panels due to different base materials and even colour changes between batches of metals. I would assume this surface treatment would weather with time leading to the differences you see in images. Compounded possibly by older jets having panels replaced.

  8. On a similar issue I have had trouble spraying vallejo over Alclad primer, it seems to pool in droplets on the surface, not levelling properly, even with flow enhancer added. Is this the same symptom you are seeing? I was wondering if there was something to do with the smooth surface finish of the primer that upset the vallejo paint, in a similar way that adding a gloss varnish might...have you tried adding satin varnish to your primer instead? I've seen a few videos on YouTube where people add satin varnish to vallejo paints before spraying.

  9. Interesting read about the mud and how to make the effects!

Finished product looks great - good work!

    Thanks Andy,

I can't take credit for the idea, taken from YouTube! The only real downside was the working time is quite short, I've ordered some of the Mig mud for my next build to see how that compares...
