I've done a couple of all black jets now and I always use Vallejo Model air black, give fantastic coverage and is pre thinned so no faff! You could get a bottle and try another coat over the top. Phil

Try their website, there's a very good chart on there, at least there is for model air...

Steve, I wish I had the room for 1/32! I was after 1/72 ideally, if I can find any decals I may do it for the GB as well, but I've got plenty to choose from if not! Thanks Phil

Having learnt the hard way, knackering a couple of Airbrushes (only cheapo copies from eBay fortunately), I'll pass on my limited experience! I followed the procedure on the DVD that came with my H&S and first, filled the cup with water and then tip away the excess pain water mix. I then blast through a cup full of water to clear. Then I back flush, I find with my AB I can just hold a bit of tissue over the front, needle guard still fitted, and that works. You'll know you're doing it right as you get bubbles in the paint cup! Then it depends what I'm doing next, if it's another colour I tend not to disassemble I just blast through some airbrush cleaner and water until it's clear, I use a cotton bud or tissue to get any residue off. If I'm done, or it's contrasting colours eg black then white I strip down and clean. I I've found that certain colours need more cleaning than others too, guess that's just experience. I use Vallejo mainly, I tend to use model air though which is pre thinned! Hope that helps! Phil

Does anyone know if the decals for the black TTTE GR1 are available anywhere, other than in the hasegawa boxing of the kit? Thanks Phil

Put me down for a couple of THERMA when they're done! Phil

I didn't rate the Vallejo metalics, I found they blocked my Airbrush all the time, not tried the copper or brass though. Citadel metallic are highly rated, I've so far only tried chain mail but it was a lot better than the Vallejo, not sure if they do copper or brass though! Hope that helps! Phil

This is looking fantastic! Where did you find the info for the TIALD pylon? I need to make one in 1/48 and I'm struggling for references! Phil

Bit of a newb to airbrushes and looking for some advice
SaintsPhil replied to Nuclearsquash's topic in Airbrushes
I did exactly the same as you, bought that set, except I got it from eBay, and it was ok, got me hooked on airbrushing! I would offer 2 bits of advice, from one newbie to another (save you from my mistakes!!). Look for a similar deal, but for a compressor with a tank, I'm still kicking my self for not paying the extra £15 for a tank. I don't think they're essential but sometimes I have pressure issues if I'm spraying larger areas. The airbrush isn't much cop, mine stopped working after a few weeks. Having said that I had no idea what I was doing when it came to cleaning and stripping/rebuilding. I would suggest ask for more advice here or look for videos on YouTube before you jump straight in and use it. I guess it's best to make mistakes with a cheap AB first though, and the compressor is worth the money by itself in my opinion. I now have a great H&S I bought from little cars and I love it! Hope my experience helps! Phil -
I asked the same question about a month back, got the same answer, use water, tried it and I would recommend it! Great stuff and sprayed nicely!

Mine arrived couple of days ago and they are excellent! Many thanks Phil

I do love tornados, and plan to do a build using that kit and the flightpath set at some point! I'm no expert so won't offer any advice, except to say you'll probably get more out of the kit as a GR4 I would think. Why not join the tornado GB? Or at least plunder the reference thread!! Phil

I'm going to ask a dumb question about alclad in general if I may (sorry for the slight hijack). What base does it use, is it cellulose, enamel, or some thing similar? I assumed it wasn't acrylic or something nice I can spray indoors without extraction! Phil

This is the one useful technique I managed to remember from when I used to make models as a kid! Heat a reasonable length of sprue evenly and gently over a candle. Try and use straight bits, keep it moving both back and forth and rotating and when the plastic starts to have a sheen on it it should be ok to gently pull on both ends! Sounds easy but does take some practice! Phil

Decals for a German Mig 29 spcial scheme
SaintsPhil replied to SaintsPhil's topic in Aircraft Modern
Thanks, I did wonder if they might have as they did the phantom I've got! Typical I always go for the discontinued ones! At least I know what to look out for now. -
Decals for a German Mig 29 spcial scheme
SaintsPhil replied to SaintsPhil's topic in Aircraft Modern
Thanks, Can't see them after a quick look, but that page is getting book marked there are some great schemes on there! -
I was amazed like you with the array of detail sets you can add to a kit! It was never like this when I used to do it as a kid, or maybe it was but I never noticed them! I dived it with both feet and had a go at it all, Photoetch, resin, aftearket decals etc. I've had mixed results. I find Photoetch looks nice, but I have chubbydigitandclumsynessitis so struggle with some of the tiny bits! I highly recommend gator grip glue to attach it. I find with superglue I stick the PE to everything but the kit! Resin is nice too but can be overkill in some cases. I have bought full resin cockpits for some kits, only to find you can't see it once it's in there! So maybe just a seat would have done! My suggestion as one newbie to another would be to have a try a bit at a time. Maybe build a couple of kits out the box, the try a resin seat or something similar or maybe some of the pre painted PE for the cockpit. I guess ultimately it's about choice and what you build the kits for! One last tip, buy direct it's cheaper, for example Flightpath has it's own website. Phil

Hi all, Does anyone know if decals for this aircraft exist? http://www.airliners.net/photo/Germany---A...12A)/0238872/L/ I've got the phantom in the same scheme in 1/72 and would love to do the pair! 1/72 decals ideally! I guess I could make most of them but the badge on the tail looks tricky! I've searched the obvious places but no luck! Phil

1/48 Italeri Tornado ECR "Black Panther"
SaintsPhil replied to ScottC's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
Very nice! Don't see many finished in the OOB scheme as I guess most people use it as a base to build a RAF version! -
Very nice indeed! I've got the very same kit in a state of half built languishing on a shelf that I really must finish soon! You've inspired me to at least look at it and blow the dust off! Phil

I wish I had that many tools at home let alone to take away! And never mind airport security or the police I would never get it past the household security!!

That's looking amazing, I love the shape of the hokum. Great idea for a stand by the way!

That's great, I had wondered if I needed to apply a gloss varnish before I applied the wash, you have confirmed what I thought! I hadn't thought about it drying quickly though so that's a great tip, I have some oils and artist white spirits (that stinks!) so I'll try that, might need to invest in low odour White spirits though... Thanks for the tips guys Phil

Thanks guys, I'll try the small brush approach, I'm trying to teach my self to be patient and take my time so that'll help! I have a couple of the promodellers washes and I find them great! I used them to weather a couple of jaguars and they came up really nice! I've not tried them for wheel wells cockpits etc but I thought it might be difficult to remove from the raised areas without taking it out the details, but I guess I could try! Phil
