  1. Good luck with these little beasties Tim, the 1/44 kits are quite nice but not for the chubby of digit.. We had many a long discussion in the previous mig 21 STGB about the correct colour for beige (only modellers could do that...). I don't think there was a direct humbrol match but it's your model so paint it how you like!
  2. Right I have had a quick look in the African migs book and the photo you are basing your colours on is in there BUT there are 3 others on the next page that show the colours to be darker and richer, so I think the one you are looking at is washed out by the sun (photo I mean). To me the brown doesn't look too far off dark earth, maybe a touch lighter, you could try XF-52 Flat earth...The green is not BS Olive green, that is too dark. It's almost just green if that makes sense, something close to Tamiya XF-5 or from a quick paint lid match Mr Color 135 Russian Green looks good.... I might email Mr Cooper and point him at this thread and the GB as a whole I'm sure he'd be interested... I hope that helps. Phil
  3. Excellent! Except I've got a few of the 1/48 ones already....
  4. Interesting that the WWII RAF set has interior grey green in it! Finally a decent match in acrylic....that hopefully sprays nicely...
  5. Sorry I didn't get a chance to look in the book last night, I will endevor tonight though! I think you've right to be cautious relying on the monitor and online swatches...
  6. This will be worth watching! I built this kit myself a while a go, areas to watch out for are wing to fuselage joint, as well as the front section to the main fuselage and the fit of the CFTs! Otherwise it's a lovely kit with nice details and bags of stores! Speaking of which will you be arming it to the teeth?..
  7. I have a copy of Tom Coopers very good African Migs (and Sukhois) book. I'll take a look in there this PM and see what he suggests. All the colour refs that are given are in fact in BS381C as that's apparently what the Russians use! I'm actually suprised Tom hasn't posted on this Group Build yet, as it's right up his street! Phil
  8. Cool, got this one planned myself at some point in the future, to sit next to the Angolan Su-27UB I just last night finished! The UB was a very nice kit to build I assume this one will be the same given it's pretty much the same plastic! Enjoy
  9. Honestly I think I might need the luck....looking forward to it mind
  10. Hello all, I tried to resist joining this GB, as usual I have too many kits on the go already! I had nearly managed it as most of the subjects I had thought about to build next, either didn't fit or the airforces were taken, then an idea came into my head... I bought a 1/48 SMER mig 17 kit a while ago as I wanted the rocket rails and fuselage pylons to use with the HB kit. I had planned to use the rest as an airbrush test bed but that seemed as waste...flicking through the African migs book for inspiration I cane across a picture of a Republic of the Congo Mig-17 in an abandonded state. Interesting subject...I also happen to have the Berna decals sheets inspired by the books...the answer was logical! Use the kit to try new techniques on as and abandonded model! I've not done this before but I was keen to try something different. I found a picture if the subject online here: http://makettinfo.hu/forum/upload/217.128.5_Mig-17F_Congo_118.jpg And the kit Sprues still bagged Not many parts, and I'm not planning on worrying about the cockpit, I'll just close it up, so should be able to build it quickly and give me plenty of time to work on the fun bit... I'm also going to make a little base to mount it on... Wish me luck! Phil
  11. It's a chance to try some new techniques at least....I'll take Republic of the Congo then please!
  12. I have indeed, I've got the SMER mig-17 in 1/48, which I bought for the rocket rails and pylons to add to the HB kit. I thought about trying to replicate the abandoned Republic of the Congo Mig-17 number 118 as in African Migs Vol, like this: http://makettinfo.hu/forum/upload/217.128.5_Mig-17F_Congo_118.jpg
  13. Hi all, I've been looking at this GB for a while and trying to resist diving in, mainly as the subjects I had planned to build either didn't fit or the airforces had been taken...but then I came across an interesting option...I think I'm right that the Republic of The Congo is not taken right??
  14. I recently tried the Humbrol 78 as a bit of an experiment. It didn't go too well..I thinned with water and a few drops of windsor and Newton flow enhancer (great stuff a must for acrylics). I struggled to get it to spray properly through my H&S with a 0.3mm needle (so not tiny). When it did spray the finish was patchy! I have previously been able to get a good finish with another colour, that was thinned with Tamiya thinners though. Personally I think there are better acrylics out there. Tamiya and GSI are the best in my opinion but they canbe nearly as smelly as enamels, especially the Mr Color range, which is Laquer based. Vallejo are ok to spray but the colour range doesn't suit all subjects. I've recently tried the AKAN paints and found them to be superb! They have a range of BS381 paints too. Well worth a look. Phil
  15. You're not the first person to recommend those pigments, I must give them a try!
  16. Good start, I do like the Eduard Migs, very nice kits. If it makes you feel better about the cockpit colour issues, it's probably the etch that's to blame, the colour is a bit off! Those Mr Paint paints are good, is that their metallic you used in the wheel well? I wondered how they matched up to Alclads...
  17. I can't find the thread I saw it in but I thought they were doing the family in 1/72...
  18. Exactly and if it's the same standard and price point as their SU-27 kits it'll be worth the wait
  19. Trumperter have announced a new tool 1/72 kit for next year I believe
  20. Haven't another company, Chinese I think, also announced a Mig-31, I wonder if HB have bought their CAD or tooling or if this is a seperate project....
  21. I think you're having the same issues I had with Vallejo, which lead me to switch to Mr Color. I, like you blamed the paint but I think the real issue was not cleaning properly. I've since discovered by experience (despite people telling me on here...) that back flushing was the very important step I missed. Both Mike and Paul mention it above (and probably did to me during my 'posts of frustraition'). I now back flush on every clean, including between colours. To illustrate the point to your self, clean the AB as you have been, until it runs clean then back flush and see how clean the stream is! Phil
  22. Great start on both kits, I meant to say join the front and back halves of the Academy fuselage first, to avoid a step but I should have guessed you wouldn't need such obvious help!
  23. Like this one http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1a/Albanian_Air_Force_Chengdu_F-7A_Lofting-1.jpg As Iain said the Trumpy kit is ok for that, it's a vey nice kit too, I'm building it currently.
  24. Good choice(s) I built the Academy PF, as an FL, for the GB a while back. It's actually a nice kit, not quite as good as the Eduard one mind. I've also built the 'fat back' SMT too it's a lovely kit, do you have marking plans or are they from the box? So many choices....
