I can't see why it would have to be Klear and not one of the other acrylic gloss varnishes, such as Quickshine or Alclad Aqua gloss. I would assume that it is the dilution with the varnish that leads to the ability to sand rather than something specifically only in Klear. That said I've not tried it so I'm only speculating...

Any Tips on how to make Long Grass/Crops?
SaintsPhil replied to Black Knight's topic in Modelling Tips
Have a look here at the static grass, comes in various lengths http://www.newmodellersshop.co.uk/static-grass.htm I haven't tried it yet but I have an old washed out washing up bottle that I'm going to try instead of the puffer applicator... Also they sell pre made mats which is another (pricey) option. Phil -
Ugandan Air Force SU-30MK - Complete
SaintsPhil replied to Roland Pulfrew's topic in Lesser Built Air-Forces Group Build
It does look a touch light BUT in my experience tamiya paints do darken up a lot under varnish coats. If you're feeling brave you could try over spraying a dark filter coat... As for the canopy the mould line does sand out fairly easily, at least the one on my Su-27 did, try micromesh or one of those multi grade polishing sticks then finish with a polish compound, toothpaste apparently works for this!! Don't start with too harsh a grade though, say 240 or 400 a medium grade. -
Looking great, interesting technique with the powders for the Camo, did you use any fixer or just rely on the gloss coat?

Sponsorship Announcement
SaintsPhil replied to AnonymousDFB1's topic in Lesser Built Air-Forces Group Build
Very generous of Tom and Harpia once again, they sponsored the Mig-21 GB last year as well! Very informative books -
Hello all, Hopefully someone with more experience in such things than me can shed some light on the best source for 'kit' to hang on the side of British Armour from the cold war period, most notably the Falklands and the Balkans. So far I've stumbled across the obvious sets from accurate Armour http://www.accurate-armour.com/ShowProduct.cfm?manufacturer=0&category=4&subcategory=104&product=346 But I'm not an expert on such things so I don't know what periods they are suitable for. I also came across the Black Dog sets: http://www.blackdog.cz/products/fig/f35093/1.jpg Obviously the rifles are different... Any other suggestions sources of suitable stowage, water or fuel cans, ammo boxes etc will gratefully be received too! Thanks in advance Phil

This looks really promising Rob, thanks for taking those snaps and your mini review!

Interesting, I saw this set had been released, would make an interesting subject for a dio. Look forward to watching your progress. For the laptop how about just paint the 'blue screen of death'...

Tamiya Matilda MkII - FINISHED-
SaintsPhil replied to Doug Rogers's topic in Achtung Panzer Group Build
Another stroll down memory lane to my model making youth! This was the first model I made a base for, it came second in a local model contest to my mate who got 1st and 3rd...guess how many models took part... -
I'd not spotted their pigment sets they look good value, maybe smaller than the mig/ak ones

Interesting, my stocks of GW metallics are running low and I was after a replacement for brush painting...don't suppose you fancy sticking a snap or 2 up of some brushed on samples??

Good progress, I finally got my hands on one late last week, it looks great in the box, the detail is very nice. I'm taking notes!!

As the others have alluded to, it'll either be the clear coat was too thin, in corners maybe, or hadn't fully cured, 24 hours is normally ok at room temperature. Equally the first application of thinners could have softened the gloss and it hadn't re-cured by the second. The other option is the thinners you use is too 'hot' I personally use low odour thinners from windsor and Newton with oils and it works ok.

I've got their russian turquoise cockpit colour and it's not bad, pretty much like Mr Color, but thinned ready to go. The solvents are stronger than mr levelling thinner though, DO NOT spray directly on to plastic, I can confirm it will damage the surface! If you've tried the Zero range of paints then that's the closest to them I can think of.

Seeing these old Tamiya kits is making me nostalgic! I might have to treat myself to one at some point, looking forward to seeing you work through this one.

Very nice, I too had no idea the Russians used these, I have fond memories of building these lovely old Tamiya kits, which weren't old back then...

A "Little" treat at Gloucester today.

They did a good 45 mins of circles right over our site, over cleeve hill then back out over the airport. It was an impressive sight and surprisingly quiet! Disappeared back to Belize just before a biblical hail storm passed over!! -
Hasegawa AV-8B Plus Harrier II - Italian navy 1/48
SaintsPhil replied to Paolo's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
Very nice indeed, built one of these myself a while ago but I was lucky enough to be given the decals from the Hasegawa kit and some home made decals for the tanks, so avoided your unfortunate situation. -
Thank you for that, that's a great help, I'll have a proper look at those links at home later. I've also corrected my initial post to remove the slightly embarrassing typo which I'll blame on my iPhones autocorrect....

Good morning all, As the title says really did the cromwell have aerials on the mounts on the turret? Pictures seem to show yes and no, I guess some B&W ones might be too low res to tell. I've seen models with them and museum ones without, both of which might not be the most accurate source of info.... Thanks Phil

Quite a task you've set your self! I have a couple if the Airfix kits tucked away to build one day, plus a KH kit part built which frankly was pretty dissapointing given the price tag! While building the KH kit I wondered if these beauties would fit the Airfix kit... http://www.hannants.co.uk/product/AIRE4606
