  1. So, an IM Gannet AEW and Jungly Sea King! And a Wasp on the cards too. Who'd have thunk it!
  2. One could always use the ones cut from the Revell A319/320s... ;-)
  3. Very informative - thanks. You sure you weren't a fish head? (From a land-lubber know-nowt.)
  4. Ok, both you and Ex-FAAWAFU said that it was the starboard side. What's the giveaway? Can't see any green...
  5. So, nerdy question that may not be able to be answered by plastic modeller folk and former naval aviators, but is it teak? Do a bit of "wood stuff" myself and just wondered seeing as though it's come up. So from the bow: anchor; forward tying-up point; non-coms' brow; unknown (rhib landing spot?); officers' brow; aft tying-up bit/ quarter deck. I like to know the names of the places, sounds like I know what I'm talking about when I brief the kids on what not to touch.
  6. Just browsing, like you do, and came across this pic of a 'bit' of HMS Illustrious. Don't know which bit I'm afraid. Looks like wooden floor was used here too (assuming this isn't the Q deck).
  7. Much the same with Mrs R and me, although her preference is watching middle-aged Belgian men and/ or elderly English women 'detect'. The thing is, she often declares that she has seen/ read "this one". So, confused, I offer that she knows who 'gets it', who did it, why they did it and how the detector figured it out. She invariably increases the volume and the argument is lost (a pyrrhic victory nonetheless). Watching her do the volume amuses me though, as the remote (or blobber in our house) has a somewhat transient working nature. Her solution is to shake the blobber, press the button harder or aim better (as if that makes any difference). Small things... A different breed I tell you. NB, another top thread - sorry, but not even interested in your Lanc, apart from the toothy grins on the engines.
  8. I receive Maritime Books weekly email and learnt from it that the above titled book is for sale at £3.50 (+ p&p). I do not have any connection to them (apart from subscribing to their two great magazines).
  9. It's showing £15 for one of these on Airfix's website! That looks like a pretty good price to me considering the C-47 was £25(?). I shall save (my son's pocket money) and buy three!
  10. Your first photo in post #385 shows the spots clearer. Stating the bleedin' obvs, they just seem to be squashed up a bit - noticeably the forward lift has two spots close either side of it. Briefly flicking through a copy of a softback sponsored by Barclays (about first commission -still had blue/light grey boot top) an overhead shot has a similar layout to your Ark with only nine spots. Reading 'Ark - Zeal', she had a docking period during summer of 1987 where it could've been re-done. Further on (plate 24) there's a pic of 10 spot with some FRS1s and GR3s on board (Nov 87 - Purple Warrier). I'm sure you've got all that info at hand anyway. I was interested to read about that 2nd commission as I presume you were on 820 at the time.? Slightly interesting to note that plate 182 shows her with only 8 spots (+ zero spot) and a dark grey central section to the flight deck. Apologies to anyone who doesn't own the book - plenty of material.
  11. Just done a quickie search on the Google and could only find these couple, although not next to an aircraft they could be used for comparative purposes (Goofer's deck? Getting the hang of this lingo now) by someone who's actually cut theirs off the sprue - I haven't yet! This appears to have some civilian copters on board (Ark) - a story in itself? Not a great photo but shows the Coles crane next to Invincible's ski-jump. With regard to figures, I've got the Tamiya injection moulded ones and some WEM/ Eduard ones too. Ed's are preprinted and a little bright. They all suffer from two-dimensionality, so you may notice on the tug driver up a bit, that he/ she's a bit filled out. All I did was dribble some PVA onto bits that shouldn't be flat after painting and bending. Although not shown very clearly in the photo I think it helps the look marginally less pancakey.
  12. Here's one I did. I knocked off the 'wheels' and stuck on some punched-out ones, bit of filing and sanding and I'm quite pleased with it. Needs a little roughing up but I just need a flight deck like yours to sit it on now. Would I be alone in thinking that the Coles 'Jumbo' (another new word) is over scale - under scale? - too big for this scale? To my untrained eye it looks massive. I vaguely remember a thread about this but couldn't find it. I can't remember whether a definitive version was agreed upon - for dimensional purposes. Perhaps 'you lot in the know' know any more.
  13. I'm looking forward to the release of an affordable E195 (will shorten to an E190 - any plans anywhere?). Fans of Cold War stuff must be pleased with two Shackletons.
  14. Award for most interesting thread of 2014? Just read the lot after waking up in my cold and damp country. The model plane thing is a bit of an aside. Happy new year.
  15. You've made it all look rather easy! Can't wait see the next step.
  16. I wonder whether a Bosnia white UN set will be included?
  17. I picked on this idea (which I've used ever since) from this site somewhere - sorry can't remember, by which you tape up the outside of the model (the bit that'll be seen) nice and firm. I then smoothe it down with something hard like the handle of a scalpel. Then from the inside I dab in some cheapo two-part epoxy (thicker the better) making sure no bubbles are left in the windows (can be difficult). Once cured, whip off the tape and Bob's your uncle. You may have to fill one or two pin holes but that's normally it. I don't find it any more expensive than the other great methods mentioned here as the leftovers normally get stuck to some lead (substitute) for nose weight and you just mix what you want.
  18. I think it's been implied that Airfix was 'in' first with Revell trailing behind. Could it be the Revell got word of Airfix's plans and tried to steal a march? Perhaps they wanted theirs out first to get that initial rush of buyers money.
  19. Thanks for the info, however, perhaps "won't" should replace "can't"...
  20. If Airfix were to do it they'd only make the craters too deep...(Can't do smilies) Edit: I don't have a problem with anything Airfix do, minor planetary satellites or otherwise.
  21. Was merrily doing a vertical landing onto my sketched out deck once, when my wife walked into the room. Needless to say, my perfectly pitched whistling wind-down of a Pegasus engine changed into whistling along with whatever was on the radio. You've just gotta have a play now and again!
  22. No thanks, I try to avoid this one as it is just lots of people stating that there'll definitely be an XXX and a YYY or long lists of hope lists. Besides Airfix are almost definitely going to issue a 350th HMS QE - oh yes. However, mods please change the title of the other one to 'calendar'.
