  1. Looks great Richie!

As for the engine covers .....I make mine out of annealed Coca Cola cans . ,,,,,once the aluminium is annealed then its quite easy to cut and shape them!....you could give it a go unless you have come up with a brain wave!....if you do ,let me know!🙂

Thanks Fozzy, yes I'm finding taking a break and avoiding long obsessive days at the bench to be the way ahead.

Not like you to take even a month off let alone 3! Life does have a way of getting in the way. Hope you are well and can get back to your project soon, what do you have lined up?

    Richie

Yes...I don't usually take such a break ,but after a 3 year break I have got myself into another rock band and had to put all my efforts into music!

I have started a 1:24 scale scratch build of a Hawker Fury.....but stopped as I had problems with the plans I was using for the fuselage......so then I restarted and still at the half a fuselage stage!!.....I will get back to the bench soon hopefully!

I know how you feel!...Scratch building is not easy and it does take it out of you. My last scratch build was  1:20 scale B17G fuselage and it took me 10 years to complete!...I battled on to get it finished and when it was it was such a relief!

One added stress factor can be that you post your build here ,on BM...just like I did ...and you almost feel that you mustn't let the followers down.....but my advice would be to take a break and make a OOB 1:72 kit and go back to it later. I found that gave me the push to continue to the end.

What ever you decide ...just to say...I feel for you and that this build is a real masterpiece!

Wow Fozzy, I was missing in action when you built this so am seeing it for the first time. Firstly, what a wonderful tribute to your brother. Secondly, what a stunning achievement. A very different project from the gigantic B17! Do you have anything on the bench at the moment?

    Richie

Cheers Richie!......not sure what's next but toying with the idea of scratch building the cockpit of a Avro Vulcan along side an Avro Lancaster cockpit in 1:20 scale....but that just maybe a project too far!😉

Mistercraft, a new name to me kit wise. Looks like the old Merit kit from days of yore! The moulds went to SMER, and I believe since went to Atlantis!I

This build certainly was a Labour of love, and just shows what can be done with a very basic, now vintage kit by a highly skilled model maker releasing its potential.

Brilliant build Fozzy!    You certainly got a lot of pleasure from your very inexpensive kit.

Have you got the Talbot Lago?

Hi Noel....cheers mate!....and yes I do have the Talbot.....will attempt that build when I have had a break from this one!.....I just love these old racers from the 50s!

    Merry Xmas

    Well done, Fozzy!!

I've done this too, and looking at the pictures of your build brings it all back 🙄🤭

Those wheels look like the originals with spoking added!? Definitely the weakest of the weak points on the kit.

Yes ,I used the original wheels and added spokes.....I was never going to put those clear plastic parts on!

I guess at the end of the day the kit was only £8....what would one expect with detail side of things!......but........I have to say I love these sort of kits as they are far more of a challenge than the "perfect" Tamiya kits....to name but a few!

    Happy Xmas!

You've certainly done that.  Somewhere I have a lago Talbot by SMER, which I believe is originally from the same stable as you Alfa.  I can honestly its probably the most basic and awful kit I own. So real congratulations to have achieved the great level you have - Andy

They are awful!....can't understand why they would leave half the engine missing!......at least you have pedals in the Lago Talbot....I should Know as I also have that kit for my sins!!.....going to have a big break before attempting that kit!😮

  8. Hi everyone!

I'm not new to Britmodeller but I am certainly new to this vehicle forum! ....as normally I scratch build Aircraft!...so be easy on me!😉

I absolutely love the cars of the 50s era of motor racing....So here is my attempt at trying to improve the Mistercraft 1:24 scale Alfa Romeo "Alfetta" When I opened the box a few months ago I was shocked at what I was looking at............nothing! 😮...a few sprues of flash ,an incomplete engine.....basic of basic cockpit and awful wheels!.....so a lot of scratch building had to be done to make it look half decent!....hardly surprising I guess as it only cost £8!😉

Any way ...I hope you like the end result!

Ah cheers Fozzy, much appreciated. I was just telling my Mrs about the enormous B17 fuselage you made from yoghurt pots, wood scraps and stuff plundered from the kitchen. I still laugh when I remember that build. In your honour I started scratchbuilding a Lewis gun today despite having a resin aftermarket one. There will be a piece of cotton ear bud involved! :)

    Richie

That huge B17G Fuselage and all its yogurt pots now proudly sits in The Miniature Engineering Museum in Carlsbad ,California USA , I am pleased to say!

    BTW......Resin aftermarket? 😮....... two nasty words!! 😉

    No.

Preparatory study and planning is not the answer! Doing is the answer! And making mistakes and reading a bit and doing some more and reading a bit and posting here and discussing with with folks here and  throwing out a dud bit and redoing the dud bit and posting again and reading a bit more and so and so and so until you’ve built something that passes your own standards. 👍

Then start a new project and repeat!

If you only read you will most likely procrastinate and become intimidated by the expertise of those world-class experts and never start and never give yourself the chance to really learn.

Get started! That’s the key, and a 1/32 Proctor would be a great subject for a beginner! 👍

Got to agree with you Steve!....when I started out scratch building the "re doing" of parts made me learn so much!...and I had plenty of help here on BM!...the books and how to do's were helpful but practice making parts makes perfect in my book!......but of course this method is not set in stone...each modeller has their own way!😉
