  1. Thanks all 4 I see I'm not alone with that sort of Skua questions Thanks Tony for your interesting remarks: if you mean the SAM pub magazine, I have a subscription fro several years ; in oct 2011 issue there was an article about the skua and it was told about the "colour spéculations" ...! my feeling about the early 1940 war time was also that the cam colours were very different from the standard 1941 EDSG - DSG I you own the Mushroom booklet , see the colouf shots on page 133 ( L2991 plane ditched and soon recoveried, then colour filmed. I am surprised by the very dark green shade and the very light grey one, which let me mind again thèses colours were not the 1841 standard ones Finally this week end I tried Tony's advice scanning several colour pictures in grey shade. Except in the above mentionned L2991 case, the dk slate grey was always lighter as the grey ( I did it specially on 217 sq well known beaufort pictures) To end my question, my favourite choice would be 803 sq L2963 : F ( with wasp design under cockpit) Does somebody know other pictures as the 2 on Lloyd's book (page 142) ? thanks for efforts and help christian
  2. Hello I am working on Special hobby kits, both Skua and Roc I am on the painting stage (choice = Norway campaign) and, in psite of owning the very good Mushroom booklet and FAA Cam ( Loyd) book , several points remain unclear Th temperate sea scheme was already edited in 1939 ( see Loyd book as "S.1.E" scheme) Tis is simply adopted by the Octopus Slua notice the Special Hobby notice gives 3 (!) pattern called A, B and C ans it is very difficult to identify in fact which camouflage a plane carried On colour picture of the Norway updigged SKua (mushroom book, page 133 ) the scheme is not that of S.1.E but close to the so "called C scheme" of the SH notice............. As usual, study of BW Photos gives the more accurate informations, but ! - Pictures are often of poor quality - contrast beetween dk slate grey (actuallly green) and dk sea grey is very low So I spent hours on this ....And I have finally a basic question : can somebody tell me definitely if the darker tone on Black and white photos is the Dk Slate grey (the green) tone or the Dk Sea Grey ? Studies of other FAA planes brings no certitude I mean any appreciation begins with such a certitude thanks to FAA fans ! Christian
  3. hello all I finally started (after about 10 years minding) tio build both Skua and Roc in 1/72. After looking about Pavla's roc and Octopus's Skua, I went back and I think now I was right because I agree what I found on this site about the better level of the last issues, that of Special Hobby (SH). It seems obvious that SH and Mushroom Pub ( an unavoidable tool to make a good kit) worked together. You just have to take a look on the last page with pictures of SH box arts. BBuit don't wait for miracles ! On these short run kits, in spite of fine détails , resin, Photocut asf , in spite of a detailed notice and nice decals, suprises occur alwauys by the real life of building ; In thèses cases joining the fuselage ( right width) to the wings was horrible with about 2 mm to sand on each side OK it is not the first time... so I understand some mentions as "not for beginners" !! Now, about the Roc, i want to depict the L6R ( L3075) of 806 squadron, because I found interesting it has B type roundels on the fuselage. It is told it was based in Hatston ( Orkneys) in april 1940 , but also it seems this, plane overflied the Dunkirk evacuation in June 1940 ( ?) There are different opinions about the underside colours : all sky grey ? ( as mentionned in SAM issue 04/05 and in Pavla's notice) or black and white wings ( as in SH notice and on 157 page of Mushroom) What do you think guys ? May be both were right because the undersides were overpainted, but , but !! But how to explain that the assumption of black and white undersides appears AFTER the other scheme (all sky grey), as the technical datas ( see Fleet air arm cam&markings- Stuart Loyd book) are clear about the opposite : black and white overpainted after the Norvegian campaign , so about in May 1940 : ???? thanks for opinions even if some mystery remains ! christian
  4. Hello everybody I fianlly started ,n a
  5. You are in the good way Since the France campaign and all over the battle of britain, german fighters kept the light light blue ( never grey that time) RLM 65 undersides coming up on the fuselage?. What was changing was the over top of the planes with a lot of varieties Christian
  6. hello everybody the last time I was on Britmodeller ( I am a french modeller specially on WW II) , it was for détails on a double (bubble and car door ) 1/72 tiffy in autumn 2010. Specially thanks to ben and chris thomas (tempest and typhoon "world's pope") for their help I assembled Acadeny's wings with Pavla's fuselage with , in my mind, a good accuracy result . Since that time , Brengun and new Airfix came , sure better and simplier ones , but work is done , with the XM-W and Ezanno's TP-E, the last one on a dio depicting the pilot holding the propeller as on the picture, on a typical Normandy airfield scene. I'd like to send pictures on this forum but never did it. :what are the rules (pictures sizes ? manner to do asf ? ) ? thanks christian
  7. Thanks edgar for this "high technic answer" , anyway full of logic, My friend françois will be able to built his beauf Mk X in the best conditions to sink enemy ships !! christian
  8. thanks both that is what is logic but actually I was wrong : the question was about the beauf Mk X (not XXI) I presume the answer is the same , although my friend said he saw a drawing of a Mk X carrying both armaments (but only a drawing !) christian
  9. Hi everybody One of my club's fellow (Club Maquettiste de Strasbourg = CMS (France) builts a beauf Mk 21 he wants to know if these aircrafts were able to carry both torpedo and rockets launchers ? May be only one of these armaments could be mounted according to the weight ? Christian
  10. Hello everybody One of my club's fellows wants to built a WW II dio of desert scènes including aircrafts of course but also RAF vehicles ( refuellers, trucks , RAF duty vehicles, mobile canteen, asf) his question is : which cam colours did they wear in the middle east ? did they remain in early war RAF blue grey tones ? later war time dk earth ? "mickey ears" scheme ? or were they all painted desert tan ? thanks for every help Christian , french modeller , CMS ( Club maquettiste Strasbourg)
  11. Hi I am still on my 2 1/72 "pavla-academy mixed" typhoons but also on an academy tempest* Ben and Chris told me the right coulour for undercarriage wells is natural aluminum just to confirm : is it the same for the tempests ?? thanks christian
  12. This reply to Ben and Chris !! I was not dispappointed watching both your quick answers ! thanks a lot Actually I had big computer problems for 3 weeks and couldn't chat Ben , you remember you asked me building thread pictures anf di didn' forget but , on the other hand , very busy days didn't allow me to take pictures. this afternnoon I did it ! and the modelling was also slowing down.... Now internet works but I can't yet point my old messages to check your e mail adressses Please send me another one to [email protected] it will be easier to share my picture on mixing Pavla and academy models A last point : I just bought the french issue of tamiya Magazine ; it shows a 1/48 white nose Typhoon, specially XM-M which looks nice : my reading before sleeping fior tonight ! best regards ! christian This reply to Ben and Chris !! 13. Hello As I am building 2 ( 1/72 academy and pavla mixed ! ) Tiffys , one "car-door" and one "late version" , I realized that inside colours may differ: 1° Once, the inside undercarriage panels seem to be MS Grey , or not ? 2° Is it the same with the undercarriage inside wells ? (or Interior grey green ?) 3° About the cockpit inside colour , it is obvious that the late typhoons had black (or at least dark grey) insides, including the back fuselage behind the seat ...? but how was it with the early car door planes ? Most modeller magazines show grey green inside colours for car-doors , including the the back fuselage behind the seat.... Ben and chris Thomas already helped me a lot and I am sure they will do again beetween all fans ! thanks christian
  14. Yes ! I did it several times frst on the hasegawa Emil which was too short and a had heavy wrong nose shape , and last year on 3 Tamiya models If you watch both Tamiya and ICM together with good plans and scale lenght calculation, you will notice that: - the tamiya has the right lenght but, through wrong fuselage couple proportions, has not the wider last couple - the ICM corrected this but through a 1 mm too long fuselage I also built 3 ICM kits and decided to neglect this 1 mm overlenght ! christian
  15. While building my 2 Typhons I am back on this forum : Thanks to everybody It was a great honour reading Chris Thomas's words , as he is ( not only to my eyes) the best tiffy and tempest specialist over the word ! I just recenntly owned the 4 fantastic books about 2nd TAF So I was very interested in the information on XM-W , which , I think , will be my choice , specially because it bears more unusual pattern including not only the white nose but also still the " Jubille operation "yellow wing upperside bands ( quite seen on the crashed plane photo ) I noted Ben and Chris' common opinion about the unfaired cannons on this plane . But, Chris , another question : on bottom page 3 of your warpaint , this plane bears the late type of cannons, so I had some doubt and asked Just note my models are 1/72 and ,as I had a big deception with Academy's fuselage ( wrong on several points in my opinion), I choose a quite difficult challenge : to adapt Pavla's fuselage on Academy's wings I will try to find more information about the 2 types of recoil spring cannons ( Hispano Mk II) So Ben , I noted your question : It would be great to see your build take shape- any chance of a build thread when you get started? I will try to take pictures but can you give me you E mail ? or note mine : [email protected] Christian
  16. Hi After 40 years model building , I built not less than 7 Emils last year ( I m such a fool like others ...) I agree with Cherny about 1/72 Emils ; Tamiya is very nice but ICM corrects his only default which is missing that the last fuselage couple ( this one on which the elevating hole is figured) is longer than the others. This is , on my opinion, not a detail but a very characteristic item of the Me 109 and I didn't care about the 1mm lenght difference take pleasure ! christian

  18. Thanks Ben I agree and Iam always trying to find a confirmation picture of what I'm doing on my models I found an indiscutable photo of XM-W , crashed ; it is the ideal model , the only thing is to guess if it had the canons without barells because this detail is invisible on the photo ( see typhoon aces osprey) your words seem very logic There are other " white nose" machines of which I didn't found pictures : Sgt Taylor's SA-H , Fl Lt Parisse OV-E asf .?.. Porfiles and even decals are not a proof and I feel I join your mindings.... christian
  19. Hello I am building a first serie “cardoor” typhoon. My choice goes to a november 1942 pattern including the white nose ; at this time the first wing underside stripes were applied but there is a controversy about this. Everybody is Ok about the painting of 4 black underside stripes but some sources ( like Chris Thomas’s War Paint n°5 on page 7) specify that the white stripes were only applied after 5th dec 1942 when the white noses were cancelled ; others ( like the older camouflage markings n° 4 ) are only speaking about both black and white stripes. Actually I have never seen a picture, other than profiles, (underside or even on undercarriage doors) on which it is obvious that the black stripes are the only ones ; has everybody seen such a photo ?
