Italeri Westland Wessex UH.5 (Oops HU.5) 1/48

Yeah its a 1/35 horn from a German WWII vehicle. Its from spares and it perfectly represents the instrument. -

Little progress to report after many weeks. Benches in this kit are very basic. So, inspired by Hendie's work, I created the becnh frame using Evergreen plastic rod. The internal cabling is also in progress -
Hasegawa 1/48 F-104 Starfighter; Is it really that rare?
stalal replied to Mark's topic in Aircraft Cold War
What is the difference between Hasegawa F-104J and F-104G boxing? Can one build an accurate out of the box G version if one can only find a J boxing? -
Why is it that Rafale carrying smart bombs does not carry a targeting pod?

Great decals sheet from Syhart. Covers most of what you are looking for and it also includes a great decal sheet for weapons. http://www.syhartdecal.fr/references.php?lang=ENG&ref=48/72-915&page=description I have bought it as I m also preparing to build the fantastic kit by Revell of Rafale B.

This will be a great help for my ongoing build. Dont want to hijack Hendie's great thread. I have been avidly following this thread. Great great stuff Hendie. Looking forward to how you deal with the rotor.

Instead of guys who are running away from building this Wessex, I m actually inspired by your thread to do all these details. Its a challenging kit but then after months of hard work, its a very rewarding and satisfying experience.

My thread isnt going as fast as Hendie's super build. I was on vacation and thats why could not put in some work on the kit. Looking at reference pictures, the fuel lid of the kit too thick. It seems the fuel lid on the helicopter is from inside. As hendie's thread rightly pointed, I thinned the hole from inside and then glued the fuel lid cover from inside. From the Evergreen set of assorted rods, I took the thickest one, cut a piece out of it and then glued it around the perimeter of the hole. I then went on to thin it almost ot the surface. More work needs to be done. As there are some other details around the filler cap that will need to be scratch built. The inside of the loading area is also coming along but slowly Using Eduard sets winch bay door has added a good level of detail to wrong shaped and out of proportion impression of the door on the kit. -

No photos for today as I m still working around detailing the interior with scratch built parts and also incorporating Eduard PE in it. However last night, when I was fitting clear windows, I realized that the observation bulge in the window is too shallow. Dont know what the solution to it. Need expert opinion on this issue of shallow observation bulge in clear window! -

Referring to this picture I used finely crafted Eduard part to determine the position of the winch door. I went ahead and cut the square hole out and then realized that I have marked it lower. Making the incision higher and cutting plastic along the panel line, I was able to relocate the door opening. A thin plastic card and some liquid putty will fill out the gap. The front bulkahead is also coming along well with a very detailed Eduard photo etched part in position. There are three more big photo etch parts to fit here and of course the fire extinguisher in the recess there. Will be back soon -
Hendie I m worried. I m building the same kit. That step & gap between nose and fuselage makes me very nervous. I m not there yet but its a good learning curve watching your build. As for your comment on Eduard set, I agree and I rarely buy their set. They are expensive and add more inaccuracies. But to my surprise, there are a lot of good details in their interior and exterior sets for this kit.

As I slowly move along this build, I have another update for you. This is a replica of part 27B of the kit. Its the pair of hanging rubber pipes from bottom of the fuselage. I tried to drill holes in the kit part but without success and in fact broke my 0.2mm drill bit Then I realized I should build it from scratch. Most of the pictures of that part show it crackled and aged rubber. I intend to do that effect and for that I needed something more realistic. This was made using hollow rubber pipe I found in a very old disused Tamiya Flak 88 kit. I have also used Evergreen plastic rods and sheet to create the backing and stiffening for the pipes The interior detail of the cabin area is coming along slowly. This will be focus of my build in the next couple of posts. -

Small update for today. Began gutting the front bulkhead. Fortunately Eduard covers the details here quite well. I m test fitting the photo etched part and there are several humps and bumps on the gutted bulkhead to smooth out. Eduard has done quite a good job at covering the details. I m not a big fan of Eduard sets as in my experience they some time add to inaccuracies than remove them. Using the walkaround pictures of Wessex on this forum and from photos in 4+ Publication books, I have started to create the pipes inside the cabin. Its just the beginning and I m also holding my breath to see how it progresses. The intention is to create as much detail inside as possible. -

I was tempted to build a Wessex as its ugly but attractive. The HAS.3 is extremely ugly. Period. Thanks though for sharing @bootneck. As someone who has built couple of Tamiya kits & admire their accuracy, quality and engineering, I shudder at the thought of how Italeri messed up the front bulkhead! The pictures of that are everywhere. You dont even have to make an effort! -

I intend to start with interior but actually could not start. Looking at references, the front bulkhead is totally wrong. Dont know if Italeri did some research or someone just drew the plans out of imagination. Fortunately, I have Eduard set but I still see some scratch building that I had not planned. -

Although I have never built their kit, I stil have some respect for Trumpeter. They dont have as many resources as a European company has. Not just the door position, the two indentations at top of door seem to be someone's imagination. Not seen them on a real Wessex of any version after going through so many pictures. . -

These are scans from 4+ Publications 'Westland Wessex' Looking at these, I did a quick test fit of the winch to see its position relative to the door. It seems slightly forward than it should be. The other mistake seems to be the gear box door with top sides being straight lines while the diagram shows the top side as a curve. -

Good. Thanks for your comment. So for an HU5 based in Cyprus what will be the right serial number? If you look at the pictures below, the topmost mount for the winch seem to be molded in correct position in the kit http://www.abpic.co.uk/photo/1454265/ http://andybonnellphotographicart.blogspot.ca/2014/03/model-builders-aircraft-walkaround.html -
My first helicopter model in many many years. In fact my first one since I started using airbrush. Wessex fascinated me because of its peculiar shape and when I came across Italeri kit, I wanted to give it a go. Lurking around this forum, I have come across several in progress threads for this kit and that inspired me even more. I intend to use techniques I have learnt on this forum from different threads. First however, what I have to get this project started. Italeri Wessex HU.5 kit 2720 Eduard Wessex interior set 49622 Eduard Wessex exterior set 48754 On opening the box, there are two big sprues and one set of similar sprues in a separate plastic bag. The box claims brand new moulds and 'Made in Italy'. Now for a new mould, coming from a First World European country, this to me at least is too much flash Also, the seats are very thick and the back rest seem to have incorrect details, if I go by what I have seen on reference pictures in several walkarounds on the web. Another thing I have noticed in walkaround is that rear tail wheel strut is more compressed than what we have in the kit. If I need to address that, I will look at it later. Thats my first impression. May be I m wrong. Going through pictures of several RAF aircraft over the years, I also suspect the '9' in 'XV719' here has the wrong typeset. I would like experts to point me out to the correct serial number for this particular example based in Cyprus. This is the example I intend to build but I m suspicious of this serial number

Some more detailed pictures with better quality.

Romain You inspired me to build this plane when you displayed your Mirage on this forum a couple of months ago. The operational aircraft would have been very clean as you mentioned but I liked that effect. I had spent so much money on this kit and time as well that I did not want to go for aftermarket decals for which that dusting would have been accurate. In the end, its just a hobby and important thing is we enjoy it while we build the kit. Thanks for your inspiration. The compliment for this build goes to you.
