There is something not quite right with those photos and the way they where taken, the gloss one is taken in a very hard light and the matt one is taken in a very soft light. Paul

Hi Siggi Just checking, when you used Humbrol s matt Cote in the round bottle, what thinner did you use. I have a couple of Matt Varnishes and will do a side by side test in the next couple of days and hopefully the results will be of use. Paul And for the un educated XDFF is?

Have you ever seen a 100% matt finish that was matt enough for you. I still suspect that you interpretation i.e. 100% zero light reflection is not physically achievable. Paul

Hi Siggi Have tou tried Vallejo Matt Varnish, I always get a good matt with it, although my definition of a good matt may be different to yours. Paul

Have you tried adding a Matt Medium to a Matt varnish I know both Tamiya and Vallejo do a matt medium, would adding that to one of their matt varnishes give a "Matter" Matt. Although I do suspect that an optical pure matt finish that Siggi is after is going to be a bit of a holly Grail type thing, knowing that he has set himself some very high standards in his requirements. It is possible that what siggi is after is just impossible to make, and that being a pure flat matt with a 100% none light reflective properties. I think he is looking for a black hole Paul

Siggi you have been doing this long enough to know that in Modelling there are some golden rules that can never be broken The 10 rules of modelling #1 whatever you pick as Dunkelgelb will be wrong #2 whatever you pick as Olive Drab will be wrong #3 whatever you pick as Russian 4BO Green will be wrong #4 whatever you pick as Panzer Grey will be wrong #5 No mater how much you spend on an airbrush someone will find a more expensive one to make you feel Inadequate. #6 No mater how good you build a kit someone will point out the kits error making you ask "why did I bother" #7 No mater how many kits you buy to hide in your loft you will still have to buy loads more, even if they are the same as the ones you already have, but at least you have stopped someone elso from buying it and maybe building it. #8 No Matter how glossy you want your finish your gloss finish wont be glossy enough #9 No Matter how Matt you want your finish your Matt finish wont be Matt enough #10 Anything you want to build will be out of stock.

Mind you you did want to stick with your Humbrols and there are very few reasons why not, just thin them either with Humbrols own thinner or bog standard white spirit. You might find, like me that you actualy like spraying Enamels. Paul If you must change then Vallejo Model Air paints are the only ones that I know of that don't need thinning, you just pay a lot for thinner that is already in the pot, so you get less paint for your money. Or you could stick with enamels and switch to xtracolor, I find most of them are thin enough to spray from the pot. Paul

That will depend on you paint (How thick it is) and you chosen airbrush and spray pressure. Try 25% thinner 75% paint a starter, if the paint is thick try 50/50, some Humbrol Enamel I have only need 10% thinners to spray at 15 PSI If using Cellulose try to use something like Ruskins as its not as hot as more general celluose thinners. Neat cellulose thinners will eat into plastic so be cearfull with it. Paul

Hi I just did a bit of a group test on enamel thinners and although Humbrol Thinners gave a good acount of itself good old bog standard White Spirit cam in a very close second and that was the low odour vesion as well. You can also use Cellulose thinners as well but they stink. Paul

Gaugemaster do the same tool in the UK, they are sold in model rail shops. Or a blob of blue instant gasket on a bit piano wire does the same job. Paul

Hi Guys I have been doing some experiments with different colour enamels from most of the available makes What I have been doing is making comparison charts by spraying colour patches of for example all the different versions of Olive Drab onto plastic sheet. This is then photographed & recorded, the plastic sheet is then cleaned with thinner and used again for the next batch of colours. The problem I get with Revell Enamels is that although they are dry and are often left for a week before I clean them off, the revell paints just rub off with a dry cloth without any thinners. I dont get this issue with any of the other makes I am using, Model Master, Humbrol, White Ensign or Xtracolor. Is this a known issue with Revell or does anyone know how to fix this. Thanks Paul

Hi Guys Just wondering Do internal mix airbrushes really exist. Most double action airbrushes are also refered to is internal mix, but when I was giving my Iwata brushes a good clean and was checking all the internals through a high magnification lupe I discovered that there is no internal area where the paint and air could mix, they all worked by passing the air over the paint tip creating a vacumme which then syphones the paint out of the nozel, which is almost the same as with the external mix brushes. With most external mix the air flows accross the top of the paint nozel and with internal mix the air flows arround the side of the nozel but it still mixes external to the brush body. Are we being had or are there genuine internal mix brushes out there. Paul

Hi Guys Like most of you I use Halfords plastic primer for my models but always found the spray pattern from the can to be rather wasteful, so I always decant the paint and apply it with my airbrush. I have been doing this for some time and have my decanting method down to a fine art and get virtually zero wastage and never really took much notice regarding how much primer I got from each can. Yesterday I decided to decant the contents of 3 full cans into one storage bottle, the Cans are labelled as 300ml so with near zero wastage I should get close to 900ml from the three full cans. You can imagine my surprise when I actually only got 400ml from the 3 cans what’s happened to the other 500ml. When they say 300 are they including the paint the thinners and the weight of the propellant as well. Are we being ripped off Or should I find something better to do with my time after all why should Halfords not be allowed to rip us off when every one else is allowed to. Am I a glass half empty or glass half full type of person Paul
