  1. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pavla-S48020-1-48-Resin-Martin-Baker-Mk-10A-Ejection-Seat-Tornado-/231470686658
  2. The IDS, GR.1, ADV & GR.4 all use the same wheels, I used Pavala seats, bit of dry brushing and they come up a treat, one thing to watch is don't cut the casting block off at the join, they'll be too low. Cut them 0.5mm into the casting block and sand them to taste.
  3. Careful with the test fitting, I had to shave down the back of the undercarriage locating tab (on the fuselage side) with a razor saw, making it almost see through to fit, I pumped a load of superglue in behind which now it is dry is probably the strongest bit of the kit! Lol Having said that the CMK wells are great, and don't need the back side dressing as there is plenty of space inside the Tornado.
  4. Whole sprue so have stashed the spare canopy. :-D Nice to have a spare.
  5. Quite right, my favourite bit of Aviation trivia... The US Govt. asked if they could bring AV-8 production on-shore under 'lisence' and the engineering experts said it was better left for Hawkers to build 'em at Dinsfold than to set it all up there. So basically Surrey trumps the industial might of the richest nation on earth. :-D
  6. I have 2 1/48 Lightnings to build (bought my Christmas presents from my young daughters myself :-D) an F3 and an F6. Mine will basically be OOB except for Eduard zoom, that was until I saw the plumbing Olives. Damn you! Lol
  7. Genuinely thank you all for your contributions above. It is an area of modelling I have never really looked at and after having grown up during an era when soviet aircraft were at best the 'super bogeyman' and at worst a badly replicated guess at what the actual aircraft looked like it is very interesting ti to hear the information above and start my own research. I think at worst I will come out of this line of enquiry more knowleable, at best with a Soviet shelf in my collection and the ability to use Alclad! :-D
  8. Does that also apply to the Mig-23 / SU-24 and the Mig-21 / SU-22?
  9. Are they better? There is always an element of group think that can blinker a big organisation. SU-34 is a great aircraft, but so are many western designs. I am not convinced by the above logic.
  10. The 'problem' being point air defence. But yes very differnt times and specs. The central planning bureau sounds rational as an explanation. The "why are western designs so diverse?" " because of competition" is maybe a better way of looking at it.
  11. Hello, A question I have always had about Russian fighters is why are some of Mig and Sukhoi's designs so outwardly similar. To my eye it always looks like Sukhoi make a bigger version of whatever Mig make. Almost as if Mig made 3 series BMW's and a few months later Sukhoi bring out the 7 series. Is this intentional sharing of aerodynamic data and principles? Is this a by-product of the command economy (this is a good fighter, better make our fighter look the same or it will not get built) thing? Is it just a massive co-incidence? examples; Mig 21 & SU-22 I know the SU-22 has VG but the silhouette is similar. Mig 23 & SU-24 size is the biggest difference here. Mig 29 & SU-27 size again. On other designs such as the SU-15 Flagon & Mig 25 the solution to the same problem was very different and both succesful in their own right, so why the similarities elsewhere? The US aircraft industry has some similar designs from different designers, F-14 & F-15 both use twin tail & wide spaced engines but don't share a silhouette. The best non Soviet example is the Dassault Mystere and North American Sabre which are very similar, but the Mirage went a very different way from the Lightning. Though not admittedly the Corvair Dart. The 3 examples above have always made me wonder if the design similarities are deliberate or not, can anyone enlighten me? Thanks.
  12. Very nice and well done on not making it look bland in one colour. I think it is a shame that Tangmere's FGR.2 (XV408) is in a poor state but the interesting part is that the blue from 92's anniversary scheme is coming through.
  13. Thats brave! Good luck with it. I returned to modelling after a few years off and was amazed at how good some of the new kits are. It may be worth having a go at a newer kit straight out of the box to get your eye in so to speak. Having said that, a fully detailed 1/32 Tornado sounds a great project! Have a look at the 31 squadron goldstars Tornado on ready for inspection to see the complexity of the the etch flaps. http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234991944-raf-tornado-gr4-31-sqn-goldstars-2015/
  14. I always stencil first then put the national & squadron markings on. You eat your liver before your bacon!
  15. Hello! I'd like to join in please. Plan is to do: English Electric Lightning F.3. (British) Based at a UK airfield By Airfix in 1/48 scale (British) Finished in Humbrol products (British) And even using UK made masking tape and stuff like that.
  16. It is the same with decals for alternative versions and external stores. Revell have the take (not alone in this) that leaving the options in the box limited and knowing that serious modellers will go AM keeps their kits cheaper. Seems sensible. I won't complain if it means good kits at reasonable prices!
