Thanks Kev and Stuart for dropping by do have one last item to make for masts and that is the canvas mast coat these I will make out of very fine cloth which will hopefully look like canvas. Working on the Main Boom and Main Gaff made these out of cherry machined Boom to 15/64" and tapered to 3/16" either end and Gaff 5/32" and tapered to 1/8" and 9/64", then made the Jaws, clappers out of Boxwood Jaws for Gaff had to be sanded to have a curve in them Drilled, counter bored holes in Jaws for nuts and bolts and also to mount clappers Made some small eye bolts and small links Then started making parts for the boom, added the sheaves for topping lift, clew band, main sheet band with bail, quarter lift band, boom tackle band, a couple of these had hinges, so here is how I made them Started by soldering small tube to brass band Then used my Turbo carver with a dental bit and removed some of the middle for one end and the other remover the outer parts Filed a bit here and there and put a .016" rod in and with have a hinge This is how it turned out on the Boom Thats it for now until next time, Regards Richard -
Very nice Martian all that extra framework will show up brilliantly under the coat of red paint Yes you are correct it is the structural support for the rear mast. Regards Richard

Ok ok I will finish her Thanks Stuart I was quite happy how that work out as well Well did not take to many pictures of the Main/Fore Masts being built along with the top masts, these mast are all tapered, also made the Iron Gate with hinges, the crane parts including brackets for Jumbo/for boom topping lifts, made both top mast tackle sheaves and both cap bands and all eye bolts so they are quite detailed. Fore Mast by Trestle Tree Main Mast by Trestle Tree On the bottom of Fore Mast made the Goose neck and Pin Saddle, used nuts and bolts Here is how I made the goose neck On the bottom of main mast made the boom rest Then added the metal galvanized chafing piece for boom jaws On the very top made the Gilt Ball and Flat Truck This takes care of both masted except for painting which will come later, now onto Gaff,Booms etc Until next time Regards Richard -

Ripaman replied to Ripaman's topic in Work in Progress - Maritime
Thought I would start at the bow and make the Bowsprit and I started with machining a piece of cherry to 15/64" and from there it was all filing because the bottom was straight and the top curved Then made up the Windlass & Counter shaft, Winch Gears & Friction Clutch from kits supplied white metal and wood Didn't take to many pic's of this progress but here it is painted Made some Quarter bitts Then last thing back in 2009 I machined the two masts out of cherry and not sure why but did not take any pic's So every think going forward is time spent here on the Island and I do hope I will finally finish her. Until next time Regards Richard -

Planking the hull was a lot of fun, very time consuming took me 12 months not working on it each day but I.m a bit slow anyway I put a batten down both sides as equal as you can get so that I could measure from last planked laid to batten then each plank was tapered to fit, planks were 1/8 wide and I cut them to around 7" long which in scale feet is 37' which I know is to long but you have to at least cover four bulkheads. Once tapered I could bend them a little bit add glue and set them in place with no need for clamps You can see from this pic the dimensions I tapered these planks So you just keep laying and laying up to batten once you get there you move the batten up so that you can start adding more planks Then finally you get to end think it came out not to bad sanded the hull down and then started the deck planking made all parts trial fitted before gluing then also made some coamings for deck structures Last pic with deck covered Until next time Regards Richard -

On my first post did say I started this model in 2006 then stopped in 2009, from the the first picture to the last one took 10 months, not sure why I stopped do like building wooden ships. The Brits did love there words for things Not to sure Stuart I should try and find out, just wondering if anyone can shine a light on this Regards Richard -
