1. Thanks alot guys, having fun with this, just building as per pictures so it could be out here or there Made a jig to make the boom or jib used angle styrene, then machined the pulley's out of brass Then put it together to see how it would look, I think not to bad. Regards Richard
2. Thanks very much Richard, tried ordering from them but they cannot ship to Canada so will have mix some colours to try and match best I can. Made the crane body base using channel Put the Coles Sign in the back weight, and then added angle to make the frame Again thanks Richard for the colour to use. Regards Richard
3. Thanks guys, Here is the top part of the turn table made the same out of 1/8 styrene, I dont have any drawings so this is looking at pictures and a 1:48 model. Then I made the Coles Crane Sign which goes in the weight. Still need to know what colour to paint it. Regards Richard
4. Hi, I am scratch building a AEC Matador 0854 with a Coles Crane in 1:24 scale, This is going to go in a diorama taking out a Typhoon engine somewhere in France late 1944 early 1945. I have the book Taking the rough with the smooth by Steve Richards, can anyone tell me what the colour of the unit would have been? I dont think it was blue!! There is no 1;24 scale body of a Matador 0854 so I bought the AEC Militant Mk1 6 x6 from Howard at KFS, had to lengthen the chassis to make it 14'-9 1/8" wheelbase. I removed the wood of the chassis and replaced with channel I made out of sheet styrene, then made the bottom turntable out of 1/8 sheet and turned it to shape. Until next time, Regards Richard
5. Thanks very much again guys for all your kind posts, I found two pictures in the PBY manual which show some idea what it should be, the first one shows the gear going through the bulkhead, hope these pictures help you Perdu. Gimme yes this is the 1:32 HpH Catalina and no not a jeweller, just a steel fabricator by trade. Then after seeing the second picture it showed that there was not a stick out but it does show that there is a round end at the front, but the opposite and from the first picture you can see a series of rivets which are half round which makes sense because that would be how they joined it together at the front, hope I 'am making sense?? Here is what I have done to the inside to look like the picture, And this is what I have done to the outside, started by cutting a round shape, added some rivets, using the nutter to make the rivets, will add another hole at the other end because that is where they put the tool to unlock if something went wrong with the workings of the gear. Still not sure if this totaly correct, maybe if someone has a picture from the inside looking forward from the front I could see if I have done this right??. Regards Richard
6. Thanks very much to all of you who have posted on my build, some of you might have seen my Hurri build so you know I'am abit in what I do, but if I see something which does not look right, I try to make it look as right as I can, I have the machines to help me, all I do is guide them to the end result. Perdu, glad the pictures helped, I received a CD full of pictures from Vandy on another site which I'am truly grateful, I say a picture is like a thousand words, did not have any dimensional drawings for this nose gear so what you see is from pictures so it could be out here or there. Mal scale is 1:32 Dave dont know yet maybe the one in Calgary Alberta, will be making the Canadian version of the Cat (Canso) Well after I had finished the nose gear, I needed to look at the cover, I had thouht it might look like this, But after I went to my book I saw this picture and to me it looks like it is square but I don't have a picture looking towards the cockpit, if anyone has one and are willing to share I would really appreciate it. As I was looking at the picture I had to think how to do the recesses in the cover so I made a punching jig, tried it on a piece of plastic and found I could not get the result I was looking for, So I decided to use some aluminum and went with .016" thick but I thought I needed a backing plate so I machined this out of ebony. Now I got the result I was looking for, Made the aluminum long enought so that I could form the piece like the picture, still have to add the detail I see. I have made it go by the bulkhead because the nose gear sticks past the bulkhead once retracted, also I saw from the picture it looks like the cover sits above the floor boards, so that is what I have done. This is where I'am now so down to model room to add a few rivets, until next time and again thank you all for taking your time to post. Regards Richard
7. Did not want to paint the shaft so I machined it down and got a piece of aluminum and made a sleave to go over the shaft, now it looks right Made the shimmy damper linkage so it can turn side to side Now have it painted and added some decals from Peter at Airscale and this is how it turn out, Was fun to build, and does look better than what is provided in the kit. Regards Richard
8. Bought the manual on the PBY and found a couple of good pictures so removed some of the stuff I had made and then made again Added the stiffeners around the top of the U-Tube Made the locking mechanism Change the shimmy damper More to come Regards Richard
9. Got another good picture of the nose bay with landing gear inside so started to make as I saw in the picture Then started to machine the scissors Added the lugs to the U-Tube Got it to go up and down More to come Regards Richard
10. Hi Oliver, scale is 1:32 and you can get it at HpH Regards Richard
11. Got a could picture of the nose gear bay so started to add some detail Found a picture of the nose gear on the web and saw that the kit part it did not look right, it was not bent on the U Tube So I started to make my own Hope you enjoy Regards Richard
12. I have parked my ongoing project the Hurri for a little while and bought the HpH Catalina, so I started this late last year thought you might like to see my progress. Here are a few shots of it on my drawing board Bought some books to help me along the way Started gluing some bulkheads together Here is part of the cockpit Broke a few of the control peddles arms so I made my own out of plastic card Did not like the seat cushions so made some new ones with Milliputty More to come Regards Richard
13. It is a little bit different "O" or is it Joan? but it does take me along time between updates Hi Dave, I do hope it is educational, have made a few piece over and over again trying to find a better way to build, more updates will follow, just got to get down to the model room, no snow at the moment and this means my lovely Wife has plans for me !!! until it does. Regards Richard
14. Thank you Rodders, just trying to make it look right. Thanks Rene Not sure yet Rich , I have to finish her sometime this century Your B17 belongs in a Museum I have watched every update on this site and the other just brilliant Good one Radleigh we will see. Well not sure if it is a work of art, I do know there are a lot of pieces to still make. Thanks Daniel, there will be more to this saga That is what I'am trying to do Steve, but the hydraulics Hi George, now that made me but thanks for the kind words, regarding your build it is looking good, keep going. Thanks everyone, until next time. Regards Richard
15. Hope you don't feel inferior Col, I really like to scratch build. Regards Richard
16. Well time for a small update, Had my summer break, or was it my Wife who said you have items to do!!! Any way made a few things for around the house, now it is time to get back to the model room, started by machining the screwed cap which holds the braket to leg, this should be screwed but for scale I have made it so that it will press on. I will do this once I drill the holes so that I can mount the moveable leg. This picture shows it in place but not pressed all the way. Then I started to make the outside frame work, this has alot of tubes which are bent to square at ends, and middle so I have tried to replicate. I got some great picture from Thomas who I am in contact with, he lives in Switzerland and he is building a 1:12 scale Hurricane, so thank you very much Thomas. So this is what I am trying to do, So this is where I am now Just one last picture, last night made the stiffening braket which will connect to the air cylinder and glued it to the connecting arm. Again thanks to everyone for looking in, Regards Richard
17. Sorry all that it has taken me awhile to respond, Hi Scorpio, yep there is always a Kiwi somewhere, thought you would like to see a couple more pic's, these where taken last year when we went up the Alaska Highway, 70th anniversary on making it. Thanks for looking in on my ongoing project, trying to make as close to scale as poss. Thanks Miragef1 Love using the machines,, have screwed up a few pieces, I just figure out away to do it the second time LoL Yes it is a labour of love, but as you can see it is taking along time!! Thanks alot Phil, it has changed alot over the years. I really appreciate that Kev, do like to try different things. Still around just dont do any modeling in the summer, we only have 5 months of nice weather here. Regards Richard
18. Hi Kev, thats very nice of you to say. Hi Nick, I remember that song nice legs shame about the face, or something laike that lol, and yes I'am realy enjoying building her. Nope and nope Tony, but I am glad it is your favourite aircraft, it is mine as well Thanks Don the drawings help, and you are right there will not be to much of the kit once I finish. Thank you very much for your kind post Strickers, I was taught how to use a mill and lathe and how to read drawings at a young age, and find if you have the right tools anyone could do this. What a week, Calgary got flooded, and I mean flooded some place down town had 6' of water, roads closed everywhere and still places have not got electric etc etc, Calgary Fames hockey rink had water up to the 10 row, very lucky for me did not have any where I live. Then today a train bridge collapsed due to the flood, this was carring dangous goods so it shut down roads which just made a parking lot all over the city. Now I know what it feels like when a disaster hits around the world. Well with this happening we were asked not to go out so I had some time to build, so now I have made the brackets which go from the leg to the link arms. Made both brackets at the same time on my milling machine. Aso I have made the second leg, but still need to file to shape the second bracket and leg bracket. Thats it for now, Regards Richard
19. Hi Jas, yep we are all mates now glad you like the build, I sure do. You are to kind Paul but again thank you very much. Now that would be an idea Bigmick, and thanks for looking in just love build this Hurri Trevor thanks very much has been a couple of years in the making, but have enjoyed myself immensely Thank you Steviej Well time to update my build, Started by filing one of the leg brackets to shape and then machined one of the legs as per the drawing I have Thought I would show how big it is so I put it in my hand Did buy the aftermarket metal legs, was going to use them until I went on this odyssey and as you will see they got the dia wrong. Well last couple of pictures for today, Hope you enjoy, until next time Rgards Richard
20. Hi Paul, Thank you for looking in on my ongoing project, when I was younger I was taught how to work a lathe, milling machine in Poole, Dorset, never did use them in my trade except for the first 3 years, then once I bought a small lathe and milling machine from Sherline later in life I found them to be very useful for scratch model builds, have made quite a few things with them when I built wooden ships and it has carried on with the Hurri. I find if I have some good drawings with measurements I can build most things. Again thanks Regards Richard
21. Hi Houston, thanks and yes you can I really appreciate your kind remarks. Hi Tony, do have another Trumpeter MK11C,will build OOB, so this one I'am building will not be covered, regarding painting will see what happens. Hi Dave, I know they have one at the Museum that would be nice to build, regarding markings there will be none, but could do that on the other one. 1:48 Sean now that would be Thanks PC having alot of drawings really help. Does time fly, have been playing around with the undercarriage made a start by machining parts out of solid brass stock, there are qiute a few pieces to make. So here are some of the brackets and linkage Drilled .016" hole into the spar because that was how they bolted the first link piece Then made the next piece which the cylinder will connct to, still have to add the stiffener bar to it Added a few rivets to the truss connections and made the last bracket Started to make one of the legs, have just machined the biggest dia which is 4.2" and then will turn where needed. Well thats all for now, Regards Richard
22. Just a small update, still need to make two back brackets to hold the inner compression ribs, glue the brackets which hold it all together and clamped them to the spar to see what it looked like. Have not glued the brackets which go to the spars yet. Will be adding all the revits, bolt heads etc etc. Until next time, Best regards Richard
23. I'am trying my best Don Thank you Houston Regards Richard
24. Wow that is very nice of you to say Melvyn, just love your book, it has really helped in my build as I think you can see. There is so much detail I am trying to copy and as I say a picture tells a thousand words. By the way if you have any more pictures, I would love to see them. I also think you like the Hurricane as much as me, I would like to say thank you very much for such a well designed book. Best Regards Richard
