1:24 scale AEC Matador 0854 with Coles Crane
Ripaman replied to Ripaman's topic in Work in Progress - Armour
Thanks a lot Mancunian just love this type of modeling Hi Alpha did my welding and fabrication apprenticeship in Poole Dorset It coming Steve trying to get it done before June Hi Nige, I have the Sherline Lathe and Milling machine which are brilliant machines Hi TGA, started the hook by looking at the picture and notice it was very close to the scale of 1:24 so I just traced around it then transferred this to a 3/4" square bar Then I milled around my marking, parted it off on the lathe this is what is left. Then I used my Turbo Carver with a dental bit and carver the shape, then after that it was just filing This took approx 2.5 hours to make the hook, not sure if it to scale but I think it is very close. Hi Kev thanks for looking in, do like the looks of the Matador and Crane Thanks Nige getting closer, received some primer paint for the Mig Paint so should be soon. Getting closer to finishing the Coles Crane part I made the Hook Block, need it to be a little heavy so that it would look right when I add the wire so I went with brass, all parts are workable. This is what I wanted it to look like, Started with the sheave, made the first one to big That it for now, Regards Richard -

Hi Alpha, yes it is taking shape Very nice of you to say thanks Made the roof out of .030 sheet, did not bend in a jig, will just glue it on later. Here with some clamps on Went back to the main crane and added detail, put in the holes in the back weight, safety switch on the front, added the wiring, some bolts and handles for the doors etc so now this can be painted. Regards Richard -
sorry to hear of your misshap, what a shame. Regards Richard

You don't need to do that Thanks Mancunian It is coming along Nige, the frame was made out of wood? Hi TGA, I used a vac machine for the cover Hi Sgt yes that one is different, glad you like how she is coming Painted the wheels with Mr Paint Tire and Rubber, they came out not to bad, will weather them later. Then I found the Olive Drab SCC15 made by Mig and they shipped to Canada Did a bit more to the seats, will add the crank arm etc Then started on the roof frame Glue the front/back axles on, made so that the wheels will turn That's it for now, Regards Richard -

Thanks for looking in Alpha, I'am quite pleased how it's coming together. Thought I would have a start with the front cab, so started with the bottom of the cab, made a wood jig so that i could get the wheel wells formed Then just glued some .030" sheet to some wood , heated up then pushed down on it and got what I wanted. Then had the start in making the cab Now front , back, engine cover went on, had to cut Howards Engine down by 6mm to make it the right size bent the front sides the same way over a wood jig Regards Richard -

Thanks Kallisti, having fun building this crane. I'am amazed I got this far Thanks Ian I will paint them all same colour and make it look like steel where cable goes, made the trestles out of left over sprue parts, they come in handy. Regarding drawings all I have is the frame drawing, the side, top, front and back of the Matador 0853 (4 wheel ) which I got from Howard at KFS, I did find this on the web, (for reference only) [/url] Thanks alot Chris Its getting there Steve, its been a fun build so far. Thanks Dave Thanks for the link very helpful info Started to look at parts of the frame, front section where they had the spring mounted, so I have made these out of brass and soldered them together and added some half round to them. Then I made the hitch for front and back, could have done the other type, but have found pictures with the hitches on Then added the steel work on the front to hold the spring in place Until next time Regards Richard -
Nige that is looking brilliant, you have so much detail, ar eyou working with drawings or pictures?, can I ask what colour did you use, and what brand was it. Regards Richard

Thanks very much Mancunian love to see your scratch build when you start, I am finding that scratch build is way more fun then just making a model out of the box. Hi Nige, thanks for looking in, it is turning out quite special, just looking at pictures so artistic license is prevailing Hi James very kind of you to say, it is looking like a Coles Crane, just wish I had some drawings, emailed some museums asking if they had some but they did not email back Thanks TGA love this type of modeling I was wondering how I was going to make the top part of the crane connect to the bottom part so I came up with this, glued some 1/8 plastic together and made the bottom fit into the channel frame, drilled and taped for a screw, making sure I put it in perfectly center Then for the bottom added a piece of plastic drilled a hole on center Now it won't tip and it turns very smoothly. This is what will hang from the crane Got the boom or Jib primed painted with Mr Suface 1200 Getting closer to prime paint the main crane body, would all the pulley's be painted the same as the main steel?? Until next time Regards Richard -

Thanks very much Alpha Its coming along, it is big here are a couple of pic's with the Typhoon Thanks Steve, that building must have been huge, I have seen photo's of Matadors lined up in a building on the web and in the book, I wonder if it was the same one. Found this other photo of a coles crane taking out a Spit engine in the field, it shows these were used alot. Here I have worked on the middle pully, not sure if it is correct, as I have said I donot have any drawings. Also started putting the side covers on, these will be removable. I noticed I did not have any stiffener plates at the top where the channels join together. Hope you enjoy, until next time, and I hope everyone has a Happy New Year Regards Richard -
