  1. Hi guys, Bit of an update to this thread, did some more work on it recently and thought i'd share the results Thanks for looking any suggestions on how to weather the upper surfaces would be highly appreciated James
  2. Thanks everyone Not a patch on the models on the proper displays, but I think we did our best for the given time and kit Hopefully next year airfix will just send a load of their new tool spitfires as these hunters were shocking tbh James
  3. Hi everyone Just thought I would share with you this model I made the evening after the Bolton IPMS show It was in the pile of kit donated for any of the cadets who had taken part in the ATC challenge (see my other thread) to rummage through and take what they wanted So, firstly thankyou to whoever donated this kit as I enjoyed building it With exams looming I wanted to build it, but for it to not take forever, therefore i was challenged by my friend (f111fan) to build it in less than one evening 4 hours later, here is what I had done Once again, thankyou to whoever donated this, and thanks for looking Any comments welcome James
  4. Hi guys, Those of you who attended the Bolton IMPS annual meeting may have seen a group of air cadets buried away in a classroom near the refreshments building some models, well, we got supplied with a rather poor hunter without canopy and decals by airfix and were given 4 hours to complete the model, using whatever resources you could find So, first things first, building as usual, all was fine, fit was good but detail was sparce and the lack of decals made things worse So as we (Flt Sgt Thomas Chadwick and myself, Corporal Parker) approached the finishing stages , I ran off and found the IPMS club decal bank There was a sheet for a 1/72 hawker hunter! Perfect! Anyway, we didnt come first but got a special commendation for the best made model Winners were horwich squadron with their 2 miss demeanours and 1 grey variant and can be seen in the show's thread here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.p...910722&st=0 So, here's what we did in four hours Thanks for looking and thankyou to all who made the day possible! Thoroughly enjoyed it James It looks better in the flesh though
  5. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread....ight&page=8 Here you go It isnt my design so I can only really link to this thread, but there is a vast wealth of information on there. You need: Transmitter and Reciever http://www.giantcod.co.uk/flysky-6channel-...r-p-406150.html 2x 9g servos http://www.giantcod.co.uk/towerpro-sg90s-m...o-p-403861.html 2s Lipo battery and charger http://www.giantcod.co.uk/gens-2s1p-lipo-b...y-p-406444.html http://www.giantcod.co.uk/ec0856-balance-c...r-p-403763.html Cheap Brushless motor and speed controller (or brushed if you have a 350 size) http://www.giantcod.co.uk/towerpro-brushle...1-p-406433.html http://www.giantcod.co.uk/speed-controller-p-405436.html Prop http://www.giantcod.co.uk/slow-propeller-s...7-p-402392.html And one sheet of depron http://www.stevewebb.co.uk/index.php?pid=D...4&area=ACCS And thats everything! a little bit of soldering is needed and varying glues (Uhu por and some hot glue or epoxy) And I know exactly what you mean about ARTF's I've just got my first ARTF, a Parkzone Stinson, very nice aircraft, still to maiden but i wouldn't try and train anybody on it, especially after seeing how I treated aircraft when learning James
  6. Hi guys , Just thought I would share with you all my latest project, I had very little to do today, so decided to build one of these: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread....ighlight=weight The one I have made is the 42inch wingspan version, with a total weight of 360 grams, its certainly a very lightweight model and is perfect for learning to fly with (i'm teaching my girlfriend ) All components in total (excluding transmitter) would cost less than £20 if sourced well And the material is just one sheet of 1250x800mm depron, approximately £5 I had all the parts lying around so this entire project took less than 5 hours If anyone else wishes to post their aircraft please do Of course, extra detailing is still to come, but it is airworthy right now Thanks for looking James
  7. Hi guys, At my local Air cadet squadron we have recently acquired a couple of sets of the project airfix kits, and with 90% of the cadets having no previous modelling experience I was asked to build one of these and photograph the steps so that they could follow, as the ratio of experienced modellers to not experienced is too great to give everyone help. Anyway, here it is, I havent used anything that wasnt available to the cadets, hence the awfully silvered decals, but I may rectify that once it has been shown at the squadron, just so there are no unrealistic expectations Aaargh Silvering! Any comments on how to remove that silvering would be greatly appreciated, as it really detracts from the appearance of the model :/ Thanks for looking James
  8. Hi canberra kid, No its a Naca 2412 aerofoil plotted from a set of ordinates well, within 1mm of that Here's a video of how its done, just skip over it and im sure you'll get the idea This video isnt mine btw James
  9. Hi guys Yeah the entire thing is just polystyrene foam like you would use for packaging washing machines, furniture etc and it has no spars as of yet It will be covered in brown paper like you would wrap parcels in, as when applied with a layer of diluted pva glue forms a hard, tough skin which acts in the same way as a wood veneer I know the nose is blocky, but yeah it will be sanded to shape later on I must leave the nose a tad wider than scale as to accomadate the motor and to prevent the foam becoming too thin and affecting its structural integrity as i'm relying on the semi-monocoque contruction to provide itself with a lot of strength Updated pics to come soon, but first I need to head to the LHS for some wood for the tail surfaces Hooking up the two elevator halves together to one central push-rod and servo is a nightmare with the dihedral they have
  10. Thankyou These nacelles are just a mock up I got a lot done today, the nose is still in its very rough form but a bit of sanding should sort that (needs to be done outside to avoid indoor foam snow everywhere and the rain was gratuitous at best today) I think the fin may be off too :/ Power wise it will be one 2200kv brushless inrunner motor, producing about 400g thrust and a pitch speed of about 60 ish mph but im not expecting that due to drag etc 24 inch ruler for scale Thanks for looking James
  11. 150 views and no replies Ive got a lot more work done today, most significantly a proper aft fuselage section Pictures to follow Anyone any ideas on how to make the nacelles? James
  12. Hi guys, So, I fly rc aircraft and thought I would build something a little more scale (externally) and would like to share the build with you all Mostly because I need some help with the general shapes and to get second opinions of whether it looks right or not First I created templates for cutting out of polystyrene foam with a hot wire cutter- the canberra lends itself brilliantly to this due to the near uniform cross section all the way down Secondly I cut out blocks roughly the same size as the parts to be cut out with the ends for the templates cut square, the rest doesnt matter Thirdly I get a nice shiny part! Epoxy them together and this is what I have up to now Please bear in mind that the aft fuselage section is a scrap piece that went totally wrong but gives the general outline For scale that is a 72nd scale canberra box Thanks for looking! I would appreciate some opinions on the nose profile The cone is still to be added James
  13. Hi Thanks for the comment Yeah I love the look of the shark mouth and the little saint figure on the tail Tbh I didnt find it too bad, it was labelled with which way round each piece went on the decals which made sure it went on properly And no its the new boxing 1/72 scale Thanks James
  14. Hi guys Just wanted to share some pictures of my latest build All comments welcome-good, constructive or otherwise Thanks for looking James
  15. Yeah sure thing ANd thanks for the reassuring words, i was feeling a bit naff after doing so badly
  16. Yeah The drill team I am part of won though, and now we're going to corps level! That made up for the bad result with the model
  17. Well, i came 5th out of 6 :/ The competition was very very good though and deserved winners imo I got 14.5 out of 20 for my model, with the winners getting 19 and 18 ish I will post pictures later
  18. The Revell CF-18A I bought the other day had FS numbers printed on the instruction sheet, so it just shows they do care, only sometimes
  19. Ah ok :)I will get the rest of the aircraft done, then maybe retrofit if I have time :)What corrections are necessary for the flaps? where abouts is the battery hatch btw?
  20. Oh yes! How did I miss that! Thankyou How can I make those please?
  21. Thankyou leader3 I shall bare that in mind With regards to the flaps I shall definitely have them lowered and to conform to the rules the model must be shown with undercarriage down I shall research the battery compartment further Thankyou, but I have a week off college, no exams left to revise for, the gf's on holiday and nothing else to do Sounds like a good week to me
  22. Wow what a site! How hard are the engines to construct?
  23. Hi guys wow! talk about fast replies Due to some sort of weird nonsensical reasons there was no wing competition for our wing and instead it's just gone straight to regionals I'm not sure what competition it is exactly, all I know is that its held on regional training day I literally got a call off my CO asking if I had anything I could submit last minute, I didn't, so went and got the Canberra @Canberra kid-How could I tart up the bomb bay? Are there any cables or any internal structural detail I could show? Formers and stringers etc Oh and regarding the colour scheme it has to be an RAF strike variant too though Thanks, James
