Well, as I understand it the metal parts of tools were painted black. Wooden parts might be painted too - green or grey has been seen - or just left natural. Sometimes the whole thing got a coat of the vehicle colour. Add dirt, dust and use into the mix and you have plenty of scope for variation...

I’ve used oven cleaner on chrome parts, it works really well and pretty fast too
