  1. Does anyone know why vehicles are in 1/35th and 1/76th scale whereas aircraft are in 1/32nd and 1/72nd? it buggers up most attempts at a diorama

Armour kits back in the 1970,s were 1/32 scale (Airfix, Revell, Frog), then along came Tamiya and produced armor kits in 1/35 to match up with Japanese O gauge railroad models and as we say the rest is history

  2. For my second build I will be using the Tasca M4A3E8 Sherman

The model will be based on the tanks from the 14th Armoured Division with there improvised sandbag armour

For extras I will be using the Legend stowage set, Evergreen strip to build the sand bag supports to the hull and turret and apoxie sculpt for the sand bags

Crew will be from Dragon and MiniArt

  3. Right this is the first one I will be building, the Tamiya 1/35 M-51 Sherman

She will be finished as a tank from The 6 Day War of 1967

Have not built any armour for about 6 years now so it should be fun

Will be adding some PE to the kit from Eduard this is on order plus some decals I picked up on E-bay

  4. Thanks for all your input guys..

Yes Mike your right - I'm just going to use the instrument panel etc and the lap/seatbelts.....

That colour is completely wrong - if I match it will have a crap looking cockpit - (it will be crappy anyway comparing it to all your works of art)

I haven't however got access to gunze h58 - havent got time to wait on delivery from the far east....

Any Tamiya/Vallejo/acrylic color that will do?

There seem to be SOOOO many conflicting opinions about cockpit colour!!! My head is a spin of Zinc Chromate, cockpit green, xf4/xf5, mixes, Gunze h58 - Don't know where to start!!!!

( i want to build the first "proper" model of my life!!!!)

In the mean time I'm going to future and mask the canopy.... (joy)

    Laterzz

    Tuco

If you want to use a Vallejo color there is the Model Air 71010 its there US Interior Green and its not a bad color

  5. Thanks for all your help guys..

Yes the Tamiya instructions say mix xf3 2 parts and xf5 1 part - which looks pretty green!!!!

Below I have included a picture on the right is the tamiya mix above, and on the left is tamiya cockpit green - the photo etch is below - as you can see neither match the colour of the etch at all..

    SAM_0570.jpg

The colour on the etch looks more like xf21 sky or xf76 gray green!!!

Maybe I am getting to hung up on this and should just paint the interior cockpit green and have done with it - but I want it to look right!!!

    dunno what to do...

    Thanks

    Tuco

The Tamiya cockpit colour out of the bottle is there RAF cockpit colour, Gunze H58 is one of the best US cockpit colours straight from the bottle,

Don't try and match the Eduard colours they are totally wrong, I think they must have someone who is colour blind working for them sometimes

You do not have to use all the parts from the PE set, I normally only use the seat belts and instrument panel, if you wish to use the other parts from the PE set you could always re-paint them the correct colour

  6. Thanks Mike! :)

    2. Being that this aircraft was photographed in mid-1944, and the fact there is no pictures of the right hand side of this aircraft. It's very likely this particular aircraft on the right hand side does display as I have it shown here(QP-Z)

If this is correct then it would most likely be the only aircraft in the whole squadron like it, as every photo of the 334th I have found shows it should read Z-QP

In fact, "Detroit Miss" of the 361st FG, the same group in the pic you posted on "Mish's" thread on "Cripe's A' Mighty" had its call letters laid out in the same manner(E2-D) on the starboards side of the fuselage and was in theater at the same time.

Could you post the photo of this, as again all the right hand side photos of the 361st I have would indicate this should show D-E2 on the right hand side not E2-D. Again this could possibly be the only aircraft in the whole squadron with its code letters this way it would be nice to have the photo of it for reference

    Thanks in Advance

    Regards,

    Hurry

  7. Hi Hurry

Just found your build of a P-51D 5NA one of the 800 build at the Inglewood plant

I have notice a couple of visual discrepancies with your model

    1. The wing tip navigation lights the colours should be RED on the left wing and GREEN on the Right not as you have done with the RED on the Right wing and GREEN on the Left wing

    2. USAAC squadron code lettering for the right hand side of the aircraft would read looking at the aircraft from the side Z-QP not QP-Z the latter was the British way of laying out squardon code letters

Apart from these few thing very nice effort

  8. Good looking kit Mish!

I notice three things off on her though...

    1. You forgot the red dot on the main gear skirts

Thanks for pointing that out for Mish I am sure she will now get it applied

    2. Wrong drop tanks... the drop tanks used in the ETO late are the English made 110 gallon paper drop tanks. The tear drop American made tanks late were being sent to the Pacific.

This build is not a WW2 build it is a Warbird Build and this aircraft carried these tanks as per the first photo Mish posted

As for the tanks being wrong for the ETO I think you need to do your research a bit better as this photo shows, four aircraft from the 361st FG all carrying 75gal tanks

    361stfgflt4.jpg

As for the paper tanks the size of them were 108gal not 110gal. The 110gal tanks were also Tear Drop shaped tanks and used in the PTO

    3. You starboard wing lights are in the wrong order. going to the nearest to the leading edge to the rear it should be amber orange, green and then red. ;)

These are recognition lights and were used to identify the aircraft to friendly troops, as such the combinations of colours could be changed to suit the order of the day

Outside these minor visual discrepancies, she looks amazing Mish. ;)

    Regards,

    Hurry

  9. That's becouse I'm trying to make a renovated (if that is the correct word) version and not a historical correct one.

On the photo's I have the Rolls Royce plate is often seen on Mustangs. That's why I placed it.

Great idea no one else is doing a restored Modern Warbird this will look cool clean and shiny B)

Where have you been able to source the small RR decals on the side cowling or are you having them made, also don,t forget to change out the props to cuff-less type
