  1. Hi guys.

Wondering if anyone has any ideas on this as it is bugging the crap out of me!

I like to fit and blend in the transparencies on my models rather than place them on at the end. This almost inevitably means some sanding and polishing goes on, if not on the canopy itself, then next to it. I find that more often than not, the canopies get charged up and then attract particles form other galaxies to stick to the insides. A lot of times, they seem to come already charged, and cleaning and polishing them only makes it worse.

My KUTA Mirage was ruined by this (an otherwise decent model) and I've got the same problem now with my Prowler. For now I've masked it and can't see it, but I just know how peed off I'm going to be when I demask it.

Does anyone have any ideas that might help, or have the same problems?

  2. You are right Glenn, the blisters are both larger, and a different shape I believe. I was unable to find sufficient reference material to come up with a conclusive, provable blister. Plus, I would have had to use a two piece mould to make one for the set. Because of these two things I didn't bother, but mentioned the fact in the instructions and suggested referring to the Airfix 1/48 kit if the builder wished to make the blisters.

  3. just what are you inferring Jen? :tomato:

the Rato looks good but don't think they were used as you say Shaun so can be safely left off in my opinion.

being a pessimist and a belt and braces sort of guy i would still recommend some strengthening of the join

but i'm more of a klutz than Jen and not as good at fixing bits of plastic together :violin:

which option are you gonna do ?

Awwwww, don't be like that Walrus old spoon :grouphug:

I was merely expressing my opinion, my intention was not to cast aspersions on your modelling skills

  4. On my quickbuild of the kit I was undecided whether to go for folded wings or not right up until the point where I glued them on at the end. I had test fitted them and can confirm the the fit of the outer wings was virtually perfect. I did nothing special, just glued the bits together.

If you are building it with them spread from the start, and use liquid poly or similar on bare plastic, you shouldn't have a problem with them falling off :)

  5. Hi all, thanks for the positive comments towards my set. :D

The set isn't available from me any more though I'm afraid. As of today, Colin at Freightdog models is in possession of the masters. I don't think he will mind me saying that he is looking at releasing the set along with a decal sheet in the near future, so those of you who may be thinking of getting one will have to wait until then.

It isn't the easiest conversion to make, but Tony has done a cracking job in my humble :)

  6. I hope you can make it to Yeovilton too Doc :)

Fear not, for superglue is my friend, behold - the hole is no more!

Most of the fuselage has a raised strip along the top. It was all messed up where the short shot was, even before I started messing with it. I simply sanded it off and replaced it when I'd done with a slice of 0.5mm plastic card. The holes were made before I cut it out using a scribing template.

As you can see, I have fitted the turret bases and these now require a certain amount of fairing in too.

    An overview,

    352724591.jpg

One of the wings is finished and ready for painting, the other is not far behind. I spent some time fettling the wing joints and have managed to acheive a literally perfect fit, meaning I can paint them separately from the fuselage. I think I have fitted pretty much everything I need to on the fuselage before moving on to paint, but there is more filling and sanding to do yet, particularly around the bomb doors.

  7. I do have some decals thanks Bex, RichE sent me some :)

    Latest shot for you,

    352724596.jpg

I wrestled the canopies mostly into submission, they aren't perfect but they will have to do, as fairly major work would be needed to get them any better :(

As you can see they are masked and I have painted an interior colour onto the whole area. I am now pretty much ready for a coat of paint :)

  8. Anyone who isn't already ignoring Mike, please do so

    Emergency call for help time!

I tidied my model room yesterday, I had to because the floor had got to the point where it was only big enough for my chair

Big boo-boo though, I seem to have lost the instructions for the Heinkel. I know some of have mentioned that you have the same kit. Could someone scan it for me please? Or give me a link to that site which has all the instructions and decals on it

  9. I would apply a white primer, or a good solid coat of white over normal grey primer first to give proper coverage. Apply your preshade over that, and don't use black. I use Tamiya XF-19 Sky Grey to preshade white. Once the preshade is on over the white base, you will only need a few more coats of white to finish the job.

As Mike says, it's perfectly possible to put more in the centres of panels to give a lighter look too.

  10. To Mikeew, the wash is Paynes Grey which is near as dammit black. Trouble is RLM66 isn't that far off black either!

Anyway this morning dawned with plenty of daylight and no headache, so the interior is now finished.

    352013411.jpg

I'm a bit grumpy because the photos I took all came out a bit blurry. I have no idea why, the camera was on the tripod as usual. The only thing I can come up with is it was me moving around nearby I must have moved a floorboard a bit or something.

I can't take them again because it's all buttoned up inside the fuselage now  The one above is the best of them.

All I really had left to do this morning was paint the moulded in seatbelts and assemble the cockpit parts into a complete flight deck. Here is a shot of the interior just before I joined the fuselage halves.

    352013410.jpg

I have now joined them and had little trouble. I used liquid cement because I didn't fancy the struggle and mess that would have resulted had I used CA glue! Remember that short shot bit?

    352013409.jpg

I added a piece of plastic card to the inside before I joined it all, idea being that I can now fill the gap with superglue more easily. It doesn't look like just a short shot to me, it almost looks as though a broken part has become lodged in the mould and been snipped off my part. Either way, it shouldn't really have got through and into a box.

My next challenge, while the fuselage has a good long time to dry off, is the nose 'transparency'

    352013408.jpg

Hopefully you can see in the photo that it isn't really all that transparent, and the surface is covered in scratches and blemishes. And they are all on the inside :crying:

  11. It will be nice to see you there Zeke :D

I have had an up and down day on this today. The first thing I did this morning was to put an oil wash on the interior parts, something I should have done last night because it takes ages to dry. Because I had to wait for that I proceeded to assemble all the sub assemblies, like wings.

    351943298.jpg

Spot the deliberate mistake! See it? I was very conscientious and carefully drilled out the marked holes from the inside for the missile pylon - for the first wing. On the second wing I got all carried away fettling for a good fit and gluing it all together, completely forgetting to drill out the holes

It isn't a big problem though. If you ever do this, look very carefully at the area you know the holes should be in whilst tilting the part in the light. You will almost always be able to see where the holes are as they leave a little flaw in the plastic. Failing that you could hold it up to the light in some cases I guess. Anyway, I found them and drilled them through.

I also built the three missiles, the tailplanes and the front parts of the engines.

    351943310.jpg

Sub assembly corner is indeed well populated. I don't think there's much else in the kit I can glue together now before I join it all together

Later today I got back to the cockpit and got started on filling in the details as the wash was dry enough to work with. I've used drybrushing, cocktail stick painting and teeny weeny brush painting so far to try and bring it to life a bit. There's still a little way to go, but I have at least been able to put some of it together. Some of these pieces are truly teeny - note the IP on the cutting mats 1cm squares :hypnotised:

    351943307.jpg

I'll have another crack at finishing it all up tomorrow with the aid of some daylight, which should help me to at least see what it is I'm trying to paint!

    Jen.
