  1. Been in a bit remiss in thanking you all for some great comments and 'Likes' on this build, so to put that right first, thank you all.

Beautiful finish and build Peter. Would you mind sharing which products were used and techiniques used to obtain the aluminum high speed silver finish?

Hi 28ZComeback, I used Alclad High Speed Silver for the finish. The important thing always with metal finishes is a good clean starting point, no marks on the plastic, and a good undercoat. I currently use Zero Paints grey primer, which I find gives a great even starting point and dries quickly. Next a couple of coats of the metal finish are usually enough to get a perfect top coat. Lastly, when everything else is done, a Matt coat to seal it all up. Nothing special to think about, just good prep and care.

    Hope this helps.

  2. Just finished the lovely Eduard Tempest II kit and what a great kit it is to build. I can't remember any part of it that causes any problems other than just old eyes and the tiny size of some of the details. Thankfully Optivisors came to the rescue and it made it to the finish line. Pretty much out of the box apart from some resin wheels, exhausts and markings from Model Alliance. I just had to build it in these markings after seeing all of the fanfare around the latest warbird to take the skies at the back end of last year. Such a beautiful restoration and really can't wait to see it fly sometime this year, hopefully. Not much more to say other than I hope you enjoy the results as much as I have and, as always, comments and critique welcomed. Onto the piccies:

Great build of an iconic aircraft - well done.

I have a slightly tenuous Dambusters story involving this aircraft which I've recounted before on BM - sorry for being repetitive, but here goes...

My sister emigrated to Australia in the late 1970s. Her middle son is an engineer for a German armaments company providing stuff for the Australian Army.

While he was working in Kassel, Germany we took a trip with him to the Eder Dam. Pictures were taken and posted on social media.  Months later while visiting my sister in Australia we were discussing our visit to the Eder Dam and her father-in-law suddenly piped-up "my best friend at school was a Dambuster and knocked down that Dam".  Turns out his best mate was Pilot Officer Les Knight RAAF who was the pilot on Lancaster N for Nan which was the 3rd aircraft to attack the Eder Dam and whose bomb succeeded in breaching the wall.

The Edersee is a long hockey-stick shaped lake - with a long stretch of water followed by a 90degree right turn to a short 500metre run-in to the Dam.

It is quite remarkable when you consider that the crews were doing this low level 90 degree turn manoeuvre at night just 50feet above the lake and with only a few seconds to align with the Dam - and then succeeding in hitting the target.

An outstandingly brave and epic achievement.

Sadly, Les Knight didn't survive the war - he stayed with 617 Squadron and was killed in action in late 1944 while taking part in the Dortmund-Emms Canal raid dropping Grand Slam bombs.

    Cheers

    Tim

Can never be repetitive when you're telling a story like that one Tim. It truly is amazing how many coincidences life throws at us but that one must have been a goosebumps moment. I read some of the history of the Grand Slam missions and wondered how any of them ever got to the target let alone made it back. Truly courageous and remarkable people.

Lovely looking Zero! Can I ask you if you used the Eduard's decals and if you stripped the carrier film? Thanks and congratulations again! Cris

    Hi Cris,

No, I didn't strip the carrier film off. It's already quite thin and I wasn't brave enough to attempt it.

  5. Can't resist pitching in with this group build and it looks like that quite a few people feel the same way. Going to have a go at the Accurate Miniatures B-25G Mitchell, with a few extras.

I've also got some decals coming which will be added to the build once they arrive.

Really looking forward to getting this one underway but just a few more to get out of the way first, so back soon.

  6. Last one for the year, short of a time machine. This is the Eduard ProfiPACK A6M2 Zero Type 21 built OOB apart from the aerial wire and what a great kit it is. It really is a pleasure of a kit to build but does require a steady hand and patience to get the best from it. I used the AK WWII IJN Aircraft Colours 3rd Generation paint set for all of the main colours and they worked flawlessly. Glossed with AK Gauzy and matted down at the end with VMS XXL Matt. Pretty sure that this won't be the last Eduard Zero that passes over my bench either but onto the pictures for this one first.

As always Comments and critique welcomed.
