MPC X-wing & custom stand
lazyeagle replied to lazyeagle's topic in Ready for Inspection - SF & RealSpace
Thanks guys. I believe it's slightly larger than /148 perhaps 1/43? I think. -
‘Awakened’ by the Star Wars bug I dug out an old MPC ERTL X-wing. This is an exercise in trying my hand at studio scale painting before I take the plunge and tentatively build my long held studio scale X-wing Salzo V 3.1 kit. Hoping for a new version of the X-wing ,V4 kit from Mike Salzo soon. The MPC kit pilot is awful so was modified as best as I was able into a Rebel flyer, R2 unit also made to look more like an Astromech droid (I hope) along with custom stand (made from two CD cases glued back to back and cladded in plasticard) No decals used or pastels for weathering- all airbrushed. Wings (S foils?) fixed in attack position. Some build photos. Modified cockpit Pilot All together now… First paint application – white with a little tan and dark grey pre-shading Painting on the Red 5 markings The stand From this …. To this… Yes…the Do they Know its Christmas CD is time capsuled in the stand….:-) Finished Model:

DeAgostini 'Build the Millenium Falcon'

Sorry that was a reference to Luke Skywalker's quote in Star Wars when he first clapped eyes on the Falcon. In no way am I referring to the quality of the kit parts which are excellent, hence why I subscribed.- 138 replies

Studio Scale Thunderbird 2 semi-scratch build
lazyeagle replied to lazyeagle's topic in Work In Progress - SF & RealSpace
Really appreciate the encouragement and suggestions It's keeping me going - muddling through- so any critiques are always welcome. Had a stab at the colour -mixture of RAL 6001 Emerald Green and RAL 6018 Yellow green. Using German automotive acrylic paints decanted into airbrush. Lighter in the pictures than it really looks on the rear bulkhead ready to be welded to the side booms. More soon. -

Stepped away from the TB2 but back on track. Bit distracted at the moment by the Deagostini Falcon and delusions of grandeur over all things Star Wars. Anyway hope to finish this by March of this year. More build photos soon as I need to heat form windows for and blend them into the body. -

I have to agree with you, trying to get a studio scale kit means you have to be part of a particular 'club' and even then what you will get is a resin casting- accurate as it might be- I am not sure if it even exists?. Chasing after this kit I felt like Indiana jones dodging Nazis for the Ark of Covenant. The Dego has a metal skeletal frame with injected plastic plating- thermally stable even if you have it in a loft. Looking at the blueprint It potentially looks like alot of fun and I'm eager for next Wednesday to arrive sooner as I am after issue two. I'm intending to subscribe after issue 3. The mods that can be done on this.....the mind boggles - I'm hoping I can add extra maintenance pit detail if there is enough space. Got my tent pitched up outside WH Smith and stock of Big Issue to sell for funding this... ;-)- 138 replies

Once again Tim many thanks- think I get it now. Nice wheelbay....certainly the effect I am after.
-
I usually create the cloud of hairspray first and wave my head through it...however first make sure my de-icing headboots are painted on so that I just fly through it without stalling. Funny you should say just picked up a few ounces of rock salt to give that a go as well.

Hello Tim Many thanks for the detailed explanation- I'll give it a whirl and try AK in due course. Must admit it does sound like something that'll require a little practice so I'll not subject it to any of my more expensive builds. So in essence base colour then 'hairspray' following which a lighter coat and then sheen of moisture to dissolve. The one thing that's making me worry again is the inability to mask it following treatment. Does not the varnish act as a barrier preventing lift up? Thanks again Sanjay

Can anybody educate me on this method of using hairspray as a means for getting a final chip effect on a finish? I've been building for a long time but this technique mystifies me for some reason. I presume you spray it on the surface and then cover it with your final colour coat. Following which you scrape away areas to simulate wear I guess? My issue is that the residual hairspray is still sandwiched between the model surface and top coat so the final finish is easy to scrape off yes? Unless a topcoat of varnish is required to make it a little more robust? Can anyone put me straight on this as I'm not a big fan of the humbrol latex masking goop and wish to get something that's a little more 1:1 realistic. Thanks Sanjay

God that one brings back memories.....remember picking that same kit up from Woolies way, way back and rushing home to slap on humbrol 11 all over it. Nice build.

1/32 Tamiya F-4C Robin Olds....
lazyeagle replied to lazyeagle's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
Thanks all for everyone's kind comments. It was airbrushed freehand, on weathering I thought I'd overdone it but since Old Man 'Olds liked to throw his steeds around the SEA sky I imagined his charges would get rather dirty. He was a legend for sure, at a time when fighter pilots could distinguish themselves without worrying about being too PC. Would love to see the real airframe as bentwaters81tfw indicated, never knew it was preserved. Sanjay -
Very interested in the kit- just to ask will it have more than one decal option. Also - is it the pre-built to be released first? Thanks - meant to add this is in reference to the Harrier...

1/32 Tamiya F-4C Robin Olds....
lazyeagle replied to lazyeagle's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
Yeah Robin Olds he was the last of the 6 gunfighting cowboys......He was larger than life and I'm pretty sure he loved the smell of burnt cordite from his Vulcan M61 in the morning. The Tamiya kit is big enough...but not as big as an 1/18th scale F-14 Tomcat so to me 1/72 needs an electron microscope. Have to admit 1/72 is a little more challenging than the larger scales for me.. -
1/32 Tamiya F-4C Robin Olds....
lazyeagle replied to lazyeagle's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
Thanks everyone for their kind comments. The Tamiya kit is a relatively easy build and me being a big Phantom Phan I just had to get a couple. Didn't realise I had the 'Chico the Gunfighter' 1/32 decals so maybe that will adorn an F-4E? Again it's all about time and the need to sleep once in awhile..
