Viper Under The Skin - Special Edition!
Nigel Bunker replied to EagleAviation's topic in Magazines & Books
If you wish to advertise your books, would you not be better off getting a place in the Trader's section? -
The only thing I can see getting in the way of an RAF procurement of the Wedgetail is politics. Namely the Boeing led US decision to slap tariffs on rival Bombardier's C-Series passenger jet which may affect jobs in Northern Ireland.

The way things are going with defence spending, 74 Squadron will reform with Landrovers whilst 111 Squadron will reform with bicycles (until the next round of defence cuts of course).

Airfix announcement at Telford 2018, F6F-5 Hellcat 1/24 scale
Nigel Bunker replied to Robert's topic in The Rumourmonger
Well my auntie Nellie is a cleaner at Hornby and whilst hoovering the boardroom she found a screwed up memo that said that the next big kit is a 1:1 scale Spitfire I (based on the tooling developed for James May's TV programme) and that General Melchett has been commissioned by Airfix Model World magazine to convert one into a Mk XIV using balsa wood and clear dope & talc, following in the footsteps of the late Alan Hall. Or perhaps I shouldn't have had strong cheese for supper?- 918 replies

There seems to be a pattern emerging with kits like the Valiant and I guess it will be repeated with the Victor. First they are on sale at RRP, then 6-12 months later the price drops as retailers look to move their stock and people who bought one on impulse look to offload it on the net. Then about 18 - 24 months after release, the prices start to climb as the retailers have none left and people on the second hand market lok to get what they can for them. Well that's my reading of the situation - unless of course you know otherwise?

Tamiya 1/35 SAS jeep
Nigel Bunker replied to James McClelland's topic in Ready For Inspection - Vehicles
James Nice model but it's in the wrong area. This section is for non-military vehicles. You should repost this in the AFV section, or alternatively ask the mods to move it for you. -
In fairness, it started at £20.00 which is a reasonable price and if people wish to bid the price up, who is to stop them?
-
I suppose the next thing is that somebody will say that you should read the instructions, rather than putting your mug on them to absorb the drips. Real modellers never read the instructions but rely on their own abilities to mess things up.

There are just so many of us who have never done this but know the light trick - I wonder why?

My collection of 1/72 Airfix models
Nigel Bunker replied to Pete McGreevy's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
I always use an aerosol primer, either the white or grey from Halfords which cost £7.99 for a large can which will do many models. I then brush by hand using eithe Xtracrylix or Tamiya but you need a good brush - I use artist's sables. Get these from an art shop or online and don't bother with the 'modellers brushes' as the sables are far better. And don't look to cover in one coat. Two or three thin coats are needed, these will give good coverage and be thin enough to show the moulded detail. Keep working at it and your technique will improve. And if there' a local model club, join it as you'll get great help and advice there. Also Halford's aerosols are useful for painted silver or matt black finishes. -

Seafire 47 on HMS Triumph Korean War overall sea gray
Nigel Bunker replied to 28ZComeback's topic in Aircraft Cold War
It looks like the two Seafires on the port side are in Dark Slate Grey/Extra Dark Sea Grey/Sky with a low demarkation name as used on the FR.46. My guess is these are early models delivered before the pain scheme changed to Extra Dark Sea Grey.Sky with the high demarkation scheme. -
Just do whatever you like - it's a hobby you do for relaxation.

Looking for 1/72 F-4E or F-4G kit recommendation
Nigel Bunker replied to CasualModel98's topic in Aircraft Cold War
Don't get mixed up with your Hasegawa kits. Their original F-4E dates from the seventies but the new kit of the F-4E (there are a series of 1/72 F-4s coverinf the B,C, D, E, J, N & S models plus the recce birds moulded in the late 90s/ early 2000s) is probably one of the best F-4 kits in 1/72 scale. -
From my experience, Lightning kits always need a nose weight.

They all appear to have Slipper tanks fitted - they look like 30 gallon models to my untutored eye but doubtless an expert will be along to give us chapter and verse.

RAF 100 Years Flypast Over London July 10th
Nigel Bunker replied to Latinbear's topic in Real Aviation
I loved the letter in the "i" newspaper last week (I think it was last Thursday) asking why there were no Wellingtons in the flypast as it had served from the start of WW2 through to the end. Presumably for the same reason there were no Halifaxes, Whitleys, Hampdens, Venturas, Bostons.............................................................etc. -
I have alway found that once a model is built, I can always find a space somewhere for it on a shelf, even if it does mean re-organising and dusting!

According to my late wife's uncle in Oz "It can get bloody cold in winter - I remember it dropping below 20C at one time".

You would have a job doing bare metal on the fin - wasn't it made of wood?

Harrier GR3 Falklands under fuselage 2 pods
Nigel Bunker replied to LaurieS's topic in Aircraft Modern
I haven't seen the kit but I think they are probably gun pods, each holding an ADEN 30mm cannon and they would most definitely have been fitted for combat. This link shows Harriers at Stanley airfield just after the conflict with the gun pods fitted.
