  1. And the GLS stuff (phase 1) is here! And good lord...check it out. It's *heavy* - there's a lot of metal here! Stunning detail in metal you just don't get in plastic...and Dave threw in some scuttles as well as a wee surprise! Nice one Dave...only snag is, I'd already sealed the hull up by the time they arrived... For an idea of scale, that's the entire width of my dining room table! And here's progress - I started on the decks, as the most natural starting point. Even though it's metal, it's still very flexible. I'm going to run some plasticard underneath to strengthen it. Also, I think I'll build as much of the decks as I can, without installing them. I suspect the front will be easier than the rear, but it'll make it much easier to work on off the hull. Note: I think I'll go back and re-do the wooden deck. This is Tamiya "wooden deck tan", but it's too light I think - wotcha recon? Needs to be browner/redder I think, and weathered, naturally. The GLS stuff separates the wooden decks from the steel - and what a godsend. Worth the money for that alone.
  2. I recon Navy/Marine..Tamiya do a Navy J (*edit* model 60308), so that'll do nicely. Just gotta see how many mk82's it comes with (I've got 4 of each type in the arms stash already). It apparently comes with the wrong AIM9's too...it comes with E's, but should be D's. Just having some correct rails for once will do me though
  3. Hi Guys, Well, I've got the LITENING on order, so this'll be RFI very soon. In the meantime, I've returned to the stash...and progress is made. Most significant is the Hindenburgs! My first Vacform, and it's scary...I thought I was super accurate with a brand new blade, but they're still going to need another run of filling and sanding. I hadn't realised I had so much flightpath...it's nice stuff, but I'll kill for some 1:32 decals for the weapons and the TIALD - especially the stormshadows (though there is some raised detail to enable easy painting of the nose stripes). Still, I'm going to blag some from the decal stash, that reasonably resembles 1:1. Anyway...28 rear fins and 24 front fins to build... Some yellow 'live' bands to do, and some antique stores to start.
  4. Well, so far I can only get it to 18, given photo's I've found. Anyone got a photo with more loaded? Also - Which Phantom was used in Vietnam; was it the D?
  5. Hi guys, Well, I've done the weathering...or the rusting mainly. Dark wash to dirty it, then some rust tamiya pastels over the top. Sealed up with matt. I'm quite pleased with the results, given it's my first ship weathering! I've yet to decide what to do with the portals - if anything. And I've got the anchor to do. Suspect that'll very rusty. In other news - Some GLS stuff is coming Have decided to do it in installments; I've kicked off with the decking set and bridge set for now. Will go for the funnel and guns in the next installment, and the final installment will be details - lifeboats, railings etc.
  6. Doh! Just posted an entry in WIP, only to notice there's a GB! Anyway, mine will be: - Tamiya 1:32 phantom (which edition is most relevant?) - Aires pit, and maybe the nozzles. Or is Avionix pit recommended? - Flightpath Nose Radome (if applicable) - metal legs (see loadout...) - xx mk82's, vietnam edition (Flightpath). Will depend on how many come in the kit. Loadout: All my planes are loaded to the max (eg see my Ju88, Eurofighter or Tornado), and this one will be no different. - 18 x mk82 500lb conventional bombs, carried on 2 x MER's & 2 TER's - 2 or maybe 4 air-to-air - Central tank There are rumours it is capable of running 24x mk 82's, but apparently the weather in Vietnam made this impossible.
  7. Hi guys, Ok, finished my KGV, so back to the planes And this time I'm going back a few decades, for an air-support/ground attack Phantom. All suggestions welcome, in particular which version, and markings and corrections (though I'm not an experienced scratch builder, I'll give some "easy wins" a go). I know there are some excellent Phantoms on here that I'll never come close to given my feeble skills, but as long as it passes the 2.5ft test while it hangs on my wall, it's getting done So, coming to this thread soon is: - Tamiya 1:32 phantom (which edition is most relevant?) - Aires pit, and maybe the nozzles. Or is Avionix pit recommended? - Flightpath Nose Radome (if applicable) - metal legs (see loadout...) - xx mk82's, vietnam edition (Flightpath). Will depend on how many come in the kit. 8. Hi Guys, Thanks for all the encouragement guys, but I think I'm calling this done. I really struggled with the rigging; I just couldn't get the tension right. I'm using thin thread and superglue. On the planes it's all so easy - here it's a nightmare! So it is what it is. The railings went on much easier than expected except around the 4 x elevated gun platforms; I just couldn't get the length or the bends right! So after 4 attempts at one, I gave up, and went straight to decals... Anyway - here it is. Apologies for crap shots once again - taken with iphone in garage, so some blurring! I'll shoot some better shots for RFI... You can see my woeful rigging here...
  9. Ok, we're just about onto the home straight now. - 20mm's are all done and on. Good grief, I'm glad... - Masts are on. Though I seem to have lost the "H" of the rear mast...the carpet monster is getting ambitious, and stealing stuff straight off my desk now without waiting for it to fall to the floor first... Next steps are the 2 I've been dreading since I started this. The rigging and the railings! I'll be so glad to put the flags on after those, and go to RFI...
  10. Ok, small update tonight - AIM9's are on. Yes, yes, yes...no rails. I know. But I chickened out of scratching my own. Next time, I promise! - LGB is on ...and was all ready to to the TIALD, but then though...woah, hold on...I need a LITENING, not a TIALD! So, it's *just* about ready for RFI...just gotta order a LITENING pod from someone first. Can you tell I shot this one in the garage with my iphone?
  11. Today's progress: - Decals on hull, and whole hull sealed with matt - Decks sanded flat to remove planking, primed and painted Steel Grey - Rear decks fitted - two front deck halves joined, filled and sanded - Front decks dry fitted; they're not totally neat, so some sanding and warping required; it's a bit bowed Tomorrow... - Get the front decks glued in - Weather the hull! After all this...contemplate how much of the Flightpath to get.
  12. A photo-less update tonight...mainly because I've simply touched up the paint errors on the hull. Then I introduced some new ones, so had to touch them up too. And made a couple more...and thus a 10 minute job took 2 hours. Likely I'll decal it, then weather it before sealing it all in before the rest of the build. Any advice on weathering techniques? I was planning: - a wash to dirty it up. - a dry brush to pop the panel joins - pastels for rust; vertical "running" from the various holes (big one for the anchor), along some random edges and the occasional spot here and there. Question is - how best to apply it? brush?
  13. Wow...none for ages, and 2 snowberries come along at once! Looking forward to seeing your progress. I'll probably spring for at least some of the Flightpath stuff, which'll help with the decks and gun issues with the kit. Just about to start sanding down my decks and fitting; after that it'll be a long pause until I order (and can afford) the flightpath.
  14. I think the wife would say I've had enough already, given my expanding waist-line...
  15. Ok, hull proceeding at pace. Here's the sanding exercise of the join. Bit of a saga - not helped by the sheer size of the thing. And here's the first coat on. Green needs a 2nd coat, and there's 5 seeper marks from the lower colour I need to fix (mainly where the tape transitions over a hull plate, and I want to tighten the upper line on the rear blue triangle a bit (also on a transition). Green and blue probably a bit strong here, but it looks good with the natural eye. Gone for a really cropped image...I'm sure you don't want to see the state of my kitchen! Needless to say, after all this lot, I ran out of tamiya tape!
  16. I'll tell you what stopped you...the combined price of the flightpath! £333 for my test order (no I didn't buy), and I didn't go totally banana's! Wow... Be interested to hear what people thoughts are - exactly which ones should I go for, and which ones from the kit will suffice? Re: Irishgeek - it's pretty thick stuff this plastic. I've got the hull together, but it's a fair ol' job - some significant filler will be needed around the mid-section join though, and all 4 hull sections were a bit warped; seems to be super-glued together for now, but the warping is noticeable when you put in the hull strengtheners...which are rubbish btw - totally flexible. I'd make your own - I think I will. Photo's of hull tonight, once I've got the filler and sanding done.
  17. Only a lunatic would undertake this kit...I mean, look at the size of it. That's a 1:350 KGV in front... So I will undertake it Any tips and suggestions (colours, fixes etc)? Plan to weather (mainly rust) this one; my first weathered ship!
  18. Ok, I've gone totally insane. I started off ok...I needed to do 2 AIM9's, a TIALD, and a 2000lb GBU, and that was it model done. Somehow though, I decided to undertake this...my entire weapons stash. And I got as far as this tonight: back to the Trumpet kit...and I can't believe it. They included a 2 x 6 GBU racks (12 500lb GBU's in total), yet only provide 4, then provide 2 x AIM9's, yet don't provide any rail at all for them????
  19. Some outdoor shots...same crappy camera, but at least the ISO setting is improved. *must* get my Canon repaired!
  20. Yay - at last! Someone with a cutting board as badly painted as mine!
  21. Sorry I didn't back to you promptly - only came back to this post by accident! These are actually a navy blue, though the camera doesn't show it. Blue - test/non-explosive round. I basically copied a photo I found somewhere. Tomwin - these wheel's aren't weighted I'm afraid, though the sheer weight of the whole model might have warped the plastic enough to look like it! I got the inner pylons direct from Flightpath I think. So long ago, I can't remember...sorry!
  22. No way man...those undercarriage bay shots are from 1:1...they've gotta be...
  23. Airframe complete! Mostly easy, but next time...I'm putting the intake flaps on early on! Gahd what a job I had getting these in, and they're nowhere near tight enough - I mean checkout the daylight in the gaps, and the step; these are support to be airtight! Oh well...obviously a modelling fault I made... All in all it looks like an AV-8B...except I'm somewhat anti-climatic about. I wanted better...maybe I've just seen to too many stunning examples on here, that I set my own expectations too high? Anyway - for what it's worth - here it is. Sorry about the pic quality...camera still running a silly ISO value, and since it's a point and click, I have no control! Oh, to have my Canon back... There is some significant weathering here, and especially along the belly and sides; camera doesn't pick it up too well. At least I got my intake right! You can see the dodgy lower intake flaps here. Curse words... A pit shot, which didn't come out too well. Also, the slightly squint starboard outboard leg; not sure what I could have done here TBH Next: Pointy boom sticks, then RFI! (Maybe tomorrow night). Still swithering on loadout...
