  1. Hi Graham,

Thats the fabulous thing about this hobby, you con=tinually learn new techniques and strive to make you current build better than the last, but the most important thing is as the late great "Modeler Al" used to say "Build what YOU want, the way YOU want to, and above all, have fun".

    Great looking Typhoon BTW

  2. Hi Graham,

Model Master is Testors own brand of paint and Italeri list them due to the tie up with Testors in the US market, they are more common in the US than on this side of the pond, I've never tried them, but some of our US cousins swear by them and the Metalizer range is supposedly excellent.

Theres an excellent comparison chart over on the IPMS Stockholm site :

In time you'll probably find the brand your happiest with and stick with it.

    Happy modelling

  3. Cheers chaps,

Has anyone ever used the DJ Parkins? Are they reliable?

    Merv

    Hi Merv,

David Parkins is a great guy to deal with, and a gentleman of the old school, he particularly dislikes rude abrasive customers, I have bought direct from him on several occasions, and bought one of the old PP Firefly kits from him, it came with the wrong white metal parts, a quick pleasant phone call got it sorted and the right parts with me in the next post.

I've got 2 of the Tornado detail sets and can assure you its some of the best photo etch around with etched detail parts for the seats, instrument panels, jet nozzles, weapons, undercarriage and more, the set also gives you replacement resin inner wing pylons with options for both single and twin Sidewinder rails, and white metal parts for the seats, undercarriage, the underfuselage line scan hump for the GR.1A/4A and the FLIR pod for the GR.4 plus more.

It's a super detailers dream and you could stretch one set to more than 1 kit I'm sure.

If you do contact him, ask about the F.3 conversion set, the last correspondence I had with him it was stil planne but on the backburner, would be interested to find out if there's been any progress.

  4. Hi Ant

    Any pictures of your build?

There are a few posted over on ARC somewhere, but checking it this morning I realised it's been a work in progress for over a year, it was originally going to be an RAF bird, but it changed to a RSAF bird fairly recently, it seemed to give me a bit of motivation.

I'll try to take some fresh pics soon and post them in the WIP section.

  5. A real shame the weather didn't play ball but plenty of people there to pass the time jovially. Was indeed a good day flying wise and company wise. Hopefully you're not getting fed up with the Saudis yet but it's not often we see them over here!!

Lots of lovely shots of the camo scheme on the BOZ pod too, now I can set to work on finishing my beastie.

Wondering if anyone is seeing the prospect of a decal sheet here, interesting contrast of the aircraft carring the grey CBLS 200.

Hi Rich I'm crrently building a 1/32 scale one using a combination of the old Superscale decal sheet that has Saudi national markings and code letters for a Tornado and F-15 Eagle and a Tiger Wings set for the RSAF data markings.

Not sure whats about in other scales, but the Saudi camo sure does suit the Tornado.

  6. Depends on the retailr, I always used to buy from HLJ in Japan but HM Customs & Excise started catching me virtually every time, didn't mind the duty it was the Royal Mail handling charge that gets me.

However I then discovered LuckyModel in HK and have very rarely been hit for duty, even on big kits like the Tamiya 1/32 stuff, has a lot to do with the creative invoices that you can request I guess.

  7. Not a bad crack Gary off the top of your head, I'll try to fill in a few of the blanks Gary left and go back as little further

  8. Very nice I admire the painting, This is the aircraft that took part in the sinking of the Bismarck, correct?. For some reason I thought it was opened cockpit all the way

    Hi Darkflyer,

No the aircraft that flew against the Bismark was the Swordfish, this is an Albacore, it was intended to replace the Swordfish, but didn't, although it entered FAA service, the Swordfish continued in service and actually outlived its intended replacement.

To the untrained eye they do look similar, the Albacore has as you say an enclosed cockpit and shrouded undercarriage legs and a larger cowling than the Swordfish.

    Nice build Wolfpack

  9. Hi Rich,

Whats the manufacturer of that kit, it's an odd scale for a 727, I know there are a few 1/96 scale kits particularly of the Viscount, Caravelle, Britannia and Comet from the old Frog and Lindberg moulds for which there are a few sheets available.

Take a look at TwoSix decals, Ray produces some excellent decals and specialises in some of the old British operators.

    Good luck in your search.

  10. You can see the nose fuse I am on about fitted to the two bombs between the BL755's on this S Type trolley as well as the strap running between the nose & the rear detonator fuse.

    rafclusterbomb.jpg

I think this is what they were trying to replicate badly.

    Cheers Merv,

    Thanks for the info.

That's a great photo, it does illustrate the compound curve of the nose though, although Revell have exagerrated it somewhat, looks like a dab of Mr Surfacer or Tippex might even things out a tad, and a strip of foil will replicate the strap.

    Cheers

    Ant

  11. With regards to Ant saying about the dodgy nose of the 1000Lb bomb's, he's not entirely right there. The bombs nose actually represents the fitting of the bomb fuse, which has a cone like cover over the fuse pocket.the is a slight 'step' where the collar meets the bomb which is'nt on the actual kit bomb.I'll see if I have a photo somewhere.

The reason behind my statement Merv, is that the Revell kit bombs just look awkward, with a change of curvature just behind the fuse section, most pics I've seen of British bombs tend to show a smooth curve to the nose profile, it would be great if you can find the photo's.

BTW I'm currently building a Saudi GR.1, anyone know if they use British bombs or USMk80 series ?

  12. Put it down to Dassault bitching about it's not his aircraft again.

Marcel Dassault was by all accounts a man with a very fiery temperament and strong nationalistic tendencies, he never regarded Jaguar as a Dassault product, it was originally a Breguet design and then BAC got involved and beefed it all up, it probably really bugged him that firstly the Adl'A and now the Aeronavale was considering using them instead of his own Mirage & Etendard.

After all a few years later it was not uncommon for Jaguar to be pitted against Mirage in sales campaigns around the globe.

  13. Paragon used to do a 1/32 SkyShadow, but I think that was before Revell released their own GR.1 kit with the various mods for the British version, I recently passed one on here, you never know someone else might have one, or perhaps we should badger Neil to put it back into production.

The dedicated Revell GR.1 sprue gives you as well as the SkyShadow, 4 x 1000lb free fall bombs (with a dodgy nose shape unfortunately), 2 x 1000lb British pattern LGB's, the undernose LRMTS pod, the sway brace fairings for the shoulder pylons and a couple of Hindenburger tanks pluss a couple of other specifically British parts.

You still get all the IDS weapons parts too, but only the BOZ pod and smaller fuel tanks are relevant.

All is not lost though as many GR.4's now carry 2 BOZ pods as the SkyShadow is now becoming obsolete, it might be easier to find a second BOZ pod and to model that load out instead.

  14. Hi Whitestar,

I have a non tank compressor, and I also use the brass adaptor piece that you mention, I haven't drilled the hole and have never experienced any back pressure problems that I'm aware of.

On the top Of the cylinder Head Is a knob that screws In and Out to regulate the airflow Hisses more when you Turn It, Does this Prevent back Pressure

It sounds as if your compressor has a pressure relief valve anyway, does the hissing increase as you regulate the pressure down, it sounds as if your compressor produces a fixed output pressure and by winding in the regulator it vents excess pressure off to give you the desired output.

If so then you should have no need to drill the hole as your already venting to atmosphere through the regulator.

    Hope this helps.

  15. Hi Bill,

I found some old Set & Sol a while back, just after I bought 2 new bottles  , admittedly they weren't 14 years old (probably more like 5 or 6), I tried them and if anything they work better than the new bottles, maybe they've become more concentrated over the years.

Try them on an old scrapper first.

  16. Oohhhhh luvverly, they will come in very handy for the 1/32 Saudi Tornado thats currently working it's ever way ever so slowly across the workbench.

I wonder if you've got any decent ones of the right side, I'm looking for details of the camo scheme on the BOZ pod, I've searched the web fruitlessly for clear pics of it, theres a few of the SkyShadsow but the BOZ pod pics are like rocking horse :shit: to find.

    Thanks for posting them :speak_cool:

  17. Hi Gary,

Sorry mate missed your post, if you look at the guys other clips there's also one on armour building and one on cars and others on Gundam stuff, all built by different guys but some excellent tips coming through despite the language barrier.

And the guy with the U-boat, has the job I want.
