  1. In the past I've subscribed to many magazines, SAM from the very beginning, SAMI likewise from its first appearance when SAM temporarily disappeared, I've also subscribed to Military Modelling and FSM, plus I've bought other mags as and when, however I stopped subscribing to all of them a couple of years back, as others have said there was too much repetition.

Now I go into WHSmith or wherever, browse the magazine, if one magazine has enough articles that interest me to justify the cover cost I buy it, otherwise it stays on the shelf, I do like a magazine that covers a broad spectrum, I used to build just aircraft, dabbled with armour, cars and ships, but these days its mostly armour but I'm still interested in other areas.

I will say that on this principle it is mostly Military In Scale and Military Modelling that have been coming home with me, I haven't seen the new mag and I wish Spence all the best with the new venture

Does anyone know just how many modelling titles we now have available?

  2. Hi Graham,

    Welcome to Britmodeller :welcome: .

I've followed your articles on the Modern Canadian Vehicle site and in MIS, in fact, the article on the Grizzly and Cougar inspired me to try a conversion of an Italeri LAV, it's stalled at the moment but I hope to pick it up again soon, also hope to see a few more of your builds here on Britmodeller.

    Happy modelling

  3. Hi Neil,

Cambrian used a very orange/red colour towards the end of their time as an independent airline, take a look at the photos posted >>>HERE<<<

I suspect the decals you have are for the earlier scheme, with the blue tail and red cheatline, not sure if TwoSix or S&M have done the later scheme, I do have a set of JetSet decals for the Orange scheme if your interested.

  4. Hi, Any one know where to get Braz stuff from? I was looking at some of the BAe RJ stuff, but its not listed at hannants?

Tried to contact braz, but I cant get the mail to send

    Hi Rich,

Their website isn't the easiest to navigate the distributor list is on the gallery page :hypnotised:

They list their distributors as Hannants, The Aviation Hobby Shop (TAHS), Airline Hobby Supplies and Airliner-World.de, Ive ordered from the first 3 over the years, but never tried the German site.

I've previously bought their stuff directly from them at ScaleModelWorld, they were ther a couple of years back, if you're going to Telford they may be there this year too.

  5. That brings back memories, over the years I can remember several RN frigates being tied up alongside the wharf in Briton Ferry awaiting the breakers torch.

Now the wharf sits alongside the M4 motorway and you get a real good view as you drive by, but back then the motorway was unfinished and the view from the old A48 was restricted at best, unfortunately these days it tends to be small cargo ships only.

Although the port is officialy Briton Ferry, locally the area is known as Giant's Graveyard and I've always wondered if it was because of the breakers yard.

  6. You can't even buy them through HLJ and the like now, I've still got a few colours put to one side, but have run out of a couple of critical colours, they are sorely missed, as Julien mentioned they were withdrawn for labelling issues and were supposed to be re-released at least a year or so back, makes me think that there was more to it than just a simple labelling issue, especially as they are now difficult to source even in Japan.

  7. I like to use aerosols too, as I don't have a permanent modelling bench and it takes too long to set it all up just to do a spot of airbrushing, if I want to spray a particular scheme I quite often take a couple of Humbrol tinlets down to my local Halfords and just match them against the can top.

Some of their stock paints can be used straight from the can, e.g. Fiat Capri Blue is a very good match for the British Airways World Scheme Blue, with an Appliance White upper fuselage, I've even just seen a build blog of an Op Telic Challenger 2 tank where the guy has used Ford Sahara Beige as a match for Brit Lt Stone, its glossy out of the can so no need to clear coat it before decalling and weathering, just need to flat coat it after.

  8. As the pylon is just outboard of the intake area, if it was swept forward of the leading edge, I guess there would be a possibility (however small) of FOD damage to the engine during weapons release.

The Revel 1/32 kit includes this pylon, and a small bomb carrier to go on it.

  9. If you are going to solder any Eduard stuff, use some fine wet 'n dry and remove that coating back to the bare brass.

    Hi James,

Actually, the Eduard set is a new release and to my pleasant surprise when I opened the Hannants envelope, the brass is just that and is not coated, don't know if this is a new thing with Eduard, but makes sense.

    Cheers

  10. I'm presently building a 1/35 scale Trumpeter LAV-R, I've got Eduard photo etch set 36-008 to dress it up, and amongst other things there are a couple of ammo boxes and jerry can holders that I suspect will be a bit fragile just relying on super glue alone to fix them.

So I'm contemplating soldering them together, I have a little bit of soldering experience from my engineering apprenticeship days, but haven't done any for years.

Do any of you guys/gals have any valuable knowledge, tips or tricks to pass on, or even recommendations on the type of solder / soldering irons / mini-blowtorches that will be of use.

Don't be shy, I'm open to any and all ideas.

    Many thanks in advance

  11. Which one? was looking at the infantry one and the command one

    Hi Tony,

Without wanting to hijack the thread, there are reviews on PMMS of the ICV variant, the CV/TACP and only yesterday the ATGM version review was posted.

PMMS is usually my second site of the day, straight after Britmodeller of course.

Nice build too eng, I can see what Mike means about the green though, but a nice dark filter might work a treat, and it might help hide the oily mark.

  12. Cool, what are AFV club models like.? I have been pondering getting a Stryker from them. As for weathering and things, could you not use masking tape, a couple of bit on top of each other then a final one stepped out from them a bit to give a soft edge when spraying ?

    These links may help )

    http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.p...c=35709&hl=

AFV Club kits are pretty much the dog's danglies, particularly with their choice of subject, only really surpassed by Tasca in recent times, take a look at the reviews over on PMMS you'll see what I mean, the Stryker has a good write up.

BTW I've got one of these left in the to do pile too.

  13. Nice topic, my great uncle Bryn (known as Uncle Titch in our family) was one of the crew of the Amethyst.

Your dead right the film is a classic and IIRC fairly historically correct, I remember seeing the film as a little lad, I was very lickl' and didn't understand the reason for her enforced stay, but I do remember being oh so proud when she finally breaks out.

  14. ........and now I need help, I am wondering about what these holes are? Some of you know? Do someone have a good picture of this area (circle in red) with opened front canopy pf real Tornado?

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/sta...hicruscotto.jpg

Thank you and see you soon!

    Hi Davide,

Fabulous build so far, I would suggest the holes you refer to are part of the Air Conditioning/Canopy De-misting system, but I'm no expert and there's more than one Tornado Techie here, who I'm sure will be able to help.

    Cheers

  15. First of all the kit does indeed come with both the extended and shortened nosegear leg, however the shortened one doesn't quite seem to match the ones I saw in the photos of FGR2s.

The FG.1 kit has the extended double oleo leg that was unique to RN Phantoms, the kit includes parts for it in both extended and contracted positions.

The kit also comes with two types of nosewheel door, both have only one landing light, but one has three smaller apertures next to the main light. As Grant pointed out, I also noticed the kit has slotted elevators.

See Ed's answer, not sure if the RAF FG.1s continued using the slotted stabilator or if the RAF changed it to the unslotted version when they took them on.

One other curious thing I noticed on some of the pics on airliners.net was some of the RAF FGR2s had something mounted on the starboard air intake, almost like a refuelling probe? This is missing on the Hasegawa FG1 kit.

Are you sure it was on an FGR.2, it sounds like the ECM containers that were fitted to the ex-USN F-4J(UK)'s although the RAF didn't use the same ECM fit, it was too much hassle to remove the fittings so the F-4J(UK)'s flew with the empty fittings still attached to the airframe..

On closer inspection of the sprues I see there is one sprue that is bagged seperately, including the radome, jet nozzles and a few other odds and sods. This sprue is marked "Phantom FG1/FGR2", and has another smaller sprue attached marked "Phantom FG1" that has the nosewheel legs and elevators. There is a big empty space where I presume the other smaller sprue attachment containing the FGR2 parts should be.

Yep you presume correctly, note the FG.1's in Naval Service did not use the centreline Vulcan cannon pod, but it is OK for RAF use.

Back to looking for the Revell FGR2....

I might have one left, let me check the stash.

    Happy modelling

  16. As Johann's comments seem to be based on the transluscent nature of the yellow decal, and as this is quite often a problem not just with MA but other decal manufacturers too, maybe MA should look at putting an additional sheet of basic white decals shaped to go under the yellow, several other manufacturers do this, seems like a simple fix.
