  1. BD-132C is identical to the one i recently bought as a starter brush ( under the brand name Spraymaster ). Having never used a high quality one i cant compare but for my purposes its superb for the price! Almost finished an ME109 with it that is in the work in progress forum. I can get a nice finish from mass coverage to thin lines and its very solidly built and easy to dissassemble and clean. Just ordered a compressor to go with it though because what i've heard people say on here is true, it will pay for itself the way it chugs through cans of propellant, and it practically drinks thinners!
  2. Hi All, done a bit more work to the old gal Shes had her basecoat of gloss varnish and had all of the decals applied. Its the first time i've ever used microset/sol and im amazed by the results compared to models ive built in the past. She's just had another thin coat of gloss to seal in the decals ready to do the panel lines and weathering, this is how its looking at the moment. Im really pleased with how this is coming along, definitely the best model i've ever built to date. theres not a brush mark or scuff on the whole thing and its mainly because of a- using an airbrush for the first time and b- patience. The latter in big supply. Most of my past models have been done quickly and appear thrown together, this one has taken about a month so far out of neccessity because of an 11 month old son and full time work, so free time is at a premium! It means i do one little bit at a time and make sure its done right, and it has days to dry and cure out before i come back to it which has helped no end. Once this is finished ill pop a completed pic up. Meanwhile im going to start on the cockpit of the new project Picked myself up a Revell JU87-D Stuka in 1/32 scale in my local Antics models in Cardiff, the thing is HUGE! Really looking forward to working on it, debating should i spent the money on the resin cockpit kit... i think the Mrs would kill me if i did Thanks for looking! V
  3. Hi everybody! Just a quick question about spraying varnish. I've got some Humbrol GlossCote to coat my 109 with prior to getting the decals down. I just wanted to check, is there any problem with spraying correctly thinned GlossCote through an airbrush? Is it ok to do that, so long as it has its usual thorough clean afterward? And the second question, it says on the bottle to thin with White Spirit, but i imagine spraying white spirit thinned varnish will see the paints bleed out and damage the finish. Are enamel thinners suitable? they certainly smell and seem to be a little less harsh. Thanks in advance! V
  4. Hi Both, thanks for the welcome! V will be just fine ( shortened from Mr V, nickname in work that stuck ) The white bands were sprayed on after the blue and earth colours were finished. Masked it all up and sprayed them and the spinner at the same time. I know what you mean about the air cans, after laying down most of the colour the cans go cold and i feel i could blow the paint on at higher pressure! Need to pick up a decent compressor come payday as this is going to get a lot of use!
  5. Hi everybody! First post, so go easy on me! Been lurking for a little while so thought i'd sign up and join what i can see to be an extremely helpful and friendly community! My name is Neil ( though i usually go by V ) and i've yet again returned to aircraft modelling. Its something that since my early teens i keep coming back to year after year but this time, i've resolved to do it properly and spend time making sure the models look well finished and dont rush or botch anything. Incidentally, i would like to say a big thank you to all of the contributors on this forum who have taken the time to explain how to accomplish various techniques and effects, the guidance i have found here has been invaluable! Having always brush painted my models, i decided to have a go at airbrushing and not wanting to spend a fortune on top of the hefty amount of paints, thinners, materials etc to replenish my aging stocks i bought a Spraymaster side fed stainless steel airbrush from ebay ( i can hear the tutting and shudders already! ) and for now, feed it compressed air cans. I did some playing around on a totally messed up old Spitfire to get used to the technique, and learned how to totally strip and clean it properly which i understand to be essential and to be honest im impressed with how well this brush works! I'd probably be blown away by an expensive high quality one..... if i can only sneak out the credit card when the wife isn't looking! So anyway, my first model i've decided to try is an Airfix BF109F in 1/48. Nothing overly complicated and a nice size to work on. I've always done camo schemes on everything i've made so decided to go with one of the alternates, and painted it in North African JG27 colours. This is a complete out of the box build with no mods, keeping it simple for a few models to get back into the swing of things and before i become overly picky about detail. Heres a quick pic of how she is looking so far I'm very impressed with how clean it is compared to all my previous brush attempts. The lines are crisp ( if slightly raised especially on the white tail band, bit heavy handed laying the colours down ) and the colours are solid. Got a few things left to do and it will be ready for a coat of GlossCote to prep it for decals which something i have never done before, and picked up from this forum! looking at the silvering on old models makes me cringe now! Then its on to seal it to begin weathering. Thanks for looking! let me know what you think! V
