Hi everybody!
First post, so go easy on me! Been lurking for a little while so thought i'd sign up and join what i can see to be an extremely helpful and friendly community!
My name is Neil ( though i usually go by V ) and i've yet again returned to aircraft modelling. Its something that since my early teens i keep coming back to year after year but this time, i've resolved to do it properly and spend time making sure the models look well finished and dont rush or botch anything. Incidentally, i would like to say a big thank you to all of the contributors on this forum who have taken the time to explain how to accomplish various techniques and effects, the guidance i have found here has been invaluable!
Having always brush painted my models, i decided to have a go at airbrushing and not wanting to spend a fortune on top of the hefty amount of paints, thinners, materials etc to replenish my aging stocks i bought a Spraymaster side fed stainless steel airbrush from ebay ( i can hear the tutting and shudders already! ) and for now, feed it compressed air cans. I did some playing around on a totally messed up old Spitfire to get used to the technique, and learned how to totally strip and clean it properly which i understand to be essential and to be honest im impressed with how well this brush works! I'd probably be blown away by an expensive high quality one..... if i can only sneak out the credit card when the wife isn't looking!
So anyway, my first model i've decided to try is an Airfix BF109F in 1/48. Nothing overly complicated and a nice size to work on. I've always done camo schemes on everything i've made so decided to go with one of the alternates, and painted it in North African JG27 colours. This is a complete out of the box build with no mods, keeping it simple for a few models to get back into the swing of things and before i become overly picky about detail.
Heres a quick pic of how she is looking so far
I'm very impressed with how clean it is compared to all my previous brush attempts. The lines are crisp ( if slightly raised especially on the white tail band, bit heavy handed laying the colours down ) and the colours are solid. Got a few things left to do and it will be ready for a coat of GlossCote to prep it for decals which something i have never done before, and picked up from this forum! looking at the silvering on old models makes me cringe now! Then its on to seal it to begin weathering.
Thanks for looking! let me know what you think!
