  1. Evening all! A little bit more progress on the Fokker. The middle wing has been attached to the body, and the whole thing has been sanded ready for painting. I was debating whether or not to prime the model, as it seems silly to paint it another colour only to spray it red again, but the coverage over primer would be a lot nicer than over the bare plastic so I decided to proceed. Disaster almost struck while priming the top wing first, as i used Halfords white plastic primer and for some reason the plastic ( even though it has all been washed prior to construction ) rejected the paint, it 'beaded' like water on glass and pooled. I had to move fast and wipe away the excess but once it had dried, a light sanding sorted it out and I used the Humbrol grey primer which worked perfectly. I've never had this problem before and have used this primer previously, it was very strange indeed. I assembled the engine, and the short section in the undercarriage and primed all of the main components. While all that was drying, I went to work on the prop. There was a pretty bad mould line down the side but this was easily sanded smooth, and it was primed as well. I brushed painted it with brown, and then a slightly darker shade deliberately streaked, finished with a Citadel 'chestnut brown' wash to give it the appearance of wood. I'm very pleased with how it has come out. I'll hopefully get at least one coat of red down on all of the main components tomorrow, and i expect it will take a fair few to get good coverage but over the grey primer it will be a dulled red rather than intensely bright, which I think will look better to be honest. Thanks for looking! ~V~
  2. Good evening everybody! Bit more movement on this one to report. After priming and spraying the interior of the fueselage halves, i moved on to assemble and paint the cockpit. While that was all drying i picked out the support structure inside the fueslage in grey, and some minor details in black. Once this had all had time to dry, i applied some wash and did a little bit of tidying up on the cockpit, and fitted the instrument panel ( or pole! ), and fitted the cockpit into the body. Once that had all securely set, the body halves were mated and I also assembled the lower wing before calling it a night. Tonight I have attached the tailplane and glued the lower wing in place, and assembled the other wings ready for joining later on. As you can see I have also applied a bit of filler to the joins and major gaps for smoothing down later. There are large gaps on the underside where the lower wing slots into place, it has had liberal amounts of filler and will need a bit of work but it should be easy enough to sort. The observant among you will also notice the rudder has snapped off. This was thanks to me dropping the fueslage. The break is clean though so it will be easily reattached later on. I'll paint it white and decal it seperately to the rest of the build Thats all for tonight, thanks for looking!
  3. Those are the ones needed for the red scheme i'm afraid, but funnily enough i was going to offer you the others as it looks like they could be made into straight crosses with a touch of masking and the right shade of dark grey. Would that be useful?
  4. That makes sense then Blimp for the internal colour, the doped linen darkened by the outer colouring. I'll paint it the Ochre/sand colour and thanks for the pointer on the steel tubing. The floor/seat is supposed to be black according to these instructions but i will paint it in a dark brown and streak it with an ink wash for a wood panel effect. Did a quick google image search for a DR1 cockpit and it shows wood with a metal footplate. Not too sure on this historic versions of the crosses, not knowledgable about such things but these are the decals as included.
  5. Thats a lovely finish on the red you've got there. What shade did you use for the interior? The instructions call for Revell's Ochre, which is 'Sand' on the Humbrol charts.
  6. Good evening all! Here is my entry for the Great War GB, Manfred Von Richtofen's Fokker DR.1 Its the Revell 1/28 ( not 1/24 as I posted previously - srry bout that! ) that I picked up at Lendons Models in Cardiff. The obligatory box art shot... And heres the spread of parts as included. She is going to need a lot of cleaning up, and filling/sanding as there are rather a lot of moulding and injection marks smack in the middle of pieces. The following pictures show the worst of it... Im pretty sure the cabin floor didnt have a large 6 in the middle of it... Of primary concern are the guns. The marks in the middle of the receiver/housing will be easily fixed but the mark on the barrel shroud is abysmal! Im going to have to fill it, sand the jacket smooth and then remark the holes. I may pick up a pin vice drill and do it that way. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it, they are fitted late in the build anyway. I was impressed that rigging line is included, and the holes are all predrilled but they would get fouled up and in the way during painting, So i am going to add the few small parts of rigging later with stretched sprue once its painted. I'm going to make a start on the pit tonight and get the floor cleaned up and seating assembled, and I need to pick up the right shade for the interior tomorrow. Really looking forward to this one Built the same one when I was younger and made a pigs ear of it, so this time around I intend to take my time!
  7. Any advice is gratefully received mate I'll try something thinner with the spitfires antenna, will have a play around with different materials to see what I can do. Attaching such a small part is a nightmare! Any guidlines or tips how to do it? or is it just CA and a very steady hand? I was going to comment on the stirrup when i posted last night, its stupid where the instructions put it but i didnt realise until after it had all been painted and sealed in, didnt want to go fillering, sanding and painting over the nice finish that was already down so finished it as per instructions. Is bloody stupid though, it would be several feet underneath the wing and bloody useless! This was one of the pics i was using for reference and aye you can see it where it should be http://hsgalleries.com/images/hurricaneiidt_1_2.jpg.
  8. Evening all! After the antenna mast, boarding stirrup and other little bits were fitted, and the exhausts painted the panel lines were given a dose of the Promodeller dark wash ( brilliant stuff! ) and this was left to dry for a while. Once dry, it was wiped down in the direction of the airflow and considering the panel detail is all raised it came out quite well. I used my Tamiya weathering set to apply the gun port residue and exhaust soot staining at this point also. Next on the agenda was the antenna wire. I dont normally bother with this particular detail as its very fiddly and I can never get it to look right, but i thought i'd give it a go as even one that isnt spot on is better than none at all. I stretched out some sprue and superglued the one end to the antenna mast, and the other end to the top of the tail once it was secure. Once this was done, it was painted black and the whole model sealed in with a final coat of Klear to protect it.... and we're finished!! Here she is at the final outcome! I hope you have all enjoyed reading the thread as much as I have enjoyed building it Im pleased as punch with how its come out in the end, and i'm already looking forward to the next one! I picked up a Tamiya 1/48 Spitfire Mk1 today in Hobbycraft and the difference in the quality of kit is outstanding - it should look good parked next to this one in similar colours! Right, now thats done - on to the Fokker DR.1 for the WWI gb Thanks for reading and for all the supportive comments along the way! ~V~
  9. Hey, dont forget me! Expressed interest in the original thread, and thanks to being able to leave work an hour early to stop off at the model shop, i'm in with my originally intended model. Revell 1/24 Fokker Dr.1 , in the Red Baron's colours Going to finish off the Hurricane first, but should be starting this one in the coming week
  10. My Hurricane is coming to a close, so i'd like to put my name down for this one with a 110. Hopefully this one will get further than last time! ( accident caused breakage, lost temper and smashed! )
  11. Hi everybody! Being a Gerry Anderson fan ( mainly Space:1999 and UFO ) I thought i'd try a different subject than WW2 aircraft and have a go at building an Eagle. I've had a look around and can only find loads of scratchbuild articles. Does anybody produce a kit of this fantastic craft that is still available? If not i may well give the scratchbuild a shot Thanks in advance Neil - IT
  12. Hi all! Just a quick update for now. The canopy was masked out with tamiya tape.. and then painted with interior green to show through the cockpit, and then the dark green that covers that area of the camo scheme. This has now been fitted in place, and the pilot walkways and exhausts have been painted black. The wheels have also been fitted. Tonight I am going to weather the exhausts and fit the tailwheel and radio mast which have been painted, then seal everything in under a coat of klear ready for the weathing to begin. I want to get this model finished by the end of the week if possible, So i can begin the next project ( Fokker DR1 ) for the WW1 GB that starts soon.
  13. Hi everybody! Bit more progress to report. The Hurricane has had several more coats of Klear ( including liberal amounts brushed onto the side to prep it for decalling where the huge lettering is! ) and it was finally ready to go tonight. Before I proceeded, I fitted the undercarriage legs in place. The wheels have still not been completed but they are on the to-do list. In that picture you can also see that I have fitted the leading edge light covers. I wasn't entirely happy with the empy silver box underneath as called for by the instructions, so wanted to put something in there to simulate a light. Nothing too fancy ( my scratchbuilding sucks ) so i used 2 circular moulding tags off the clear parts for my JU87 Stuka, glued in place and painted the 3 thin black lines to emulate the real lamps' grill cover. It doesn't look very good, but better than nothing in there at all. So on to the decalling! In a fashion most unlike Airfix decals, they went on a treat! The wing roundels are very thick, but thats nothing a touch of Microsol can't fix. I did have problems however with the side panel ones. The one on the port side had been folded in packaging, and was close to disentegrating and it took large amounts of microset and water to get it remotely into position. Its not where it should be ( off by about 5mm, offset rear to the otherside ) but I had no choice as it had grabbed firm and wasnt coming loose without destroying it Meh, it looks fine from either side, for one of my models - it will do All of them have been applied, and the paint around the cockpit edges touched up. Here is how she is looking at the moment. The spinner isn't glued in place, it still needs another coat of matt black - i'll do that when I come to paint the wheels and fit the tailwheel and antenna mast also. Before I go to bed i'm going to give them all a dose of Microsol for them to bed down, and assuming they all look fine i can give it a blast or 2 of Klear tomorrow evening after archery, to seal it all in ready for weathering. Its looking far too 'still got the factory sticker on it!' at the moment. I'm not going to weather it heavily, just some staining from the gun ports, exhaust soot and streak, and panel lines to give it a broken-in feel. *edit* forgot to mention the exhausts still need painting as well, will do that and the canopy before I move onto weathering. *edit*
  14. Evening all! Time for an update! Once the dark earth coat was completely dry, i masked up the model ready for the dark green. I followed the pattern on the decalling instructions, its not exact but its close enough On top of this i sprayed 2 thinned coats of dark green Humbrol enamels. Due to the matt and dark surface it was going onto it looked fine after 1 coat, but i put a second on it to ensure good coverage. When i removed the tape, disaster!! lesson learned, dont skimp on materials and use proper Tamiya tape! It had bled under in a few places, and left sticky residue behind. These were easily rubbed off and touched up, but still made me panic a little! It has now had a coat of Klear to seal it all in and its darkened the colours and made everythign nice and flat/even, instead of that weird 'dry' finish you get with sprayed matt coats. Those areas where you can see I touched up the paint are practically invisible to the eye, but the camera flash has highlighted them due to the different finish between the sprayed and brushed bits. Subsequent Klear coats should blend it a bit more. Its currently having 2hrs to make sure its completely dry and I will put down another coat before bed. i want to get a few coats down to ensure its ready for the decals. I also noticed in those pics a bit on the starboard wing where it meets the fueselage at the leading edge, where it has bled under, so that will be sorted out before the next Klear coat as well. I've also assembled the wheels and they are setting ready to sand the seam down and paint them. Once they are finished they can be fitted along with the tail wheel. Its coming together nicely
  15. Oh yeah baby! love Luftwaffe aircraft of this period ( with the 109 being my fave of all time! ) I've got a 1/32 Revell JU87 that has been part built and has been sat in the cupboard stalled ( interior assembled and painted, fueselage halves glued together. thats it ) for about 6 months - is that at an early enough stage to join with? I'll probably save the 1/32 Hasegawa bf109E for this one as well
