  1. The USAF went from the uncooled Sidewinder B to the Peltier effect thermo-electric cooled E, followed by the J/P/N ditto. Argon gas cooling only came with the USAF versions of the L/M in the 1980s (the Navy used nitrogen cooling for its D/G/L/M Winders, some of which the RAF also used, the C being SARH for use on F-8 Crusaders only). Falcon could be used as an IRST sensor and could pick up MiGs before they showed on radar. Of course, at that point they were out of cooling gas and were useless, but might have helped set up the correct parameters for a BVR Sparrow shot. Fascinating story. A very misunderstood missile but, yes, not a dogfighting weapon. The AIM-4H was in development by 1972 offering the seeker of the G combined with active optical proximity fusing. But it was cancelled in favour of the new generation all-aspect AIM-9L Sidewinder. Anyway, it's groovy painting missiles with red paint. Adds a splash of colour. Tony
  2. My gosh. I hope I live to see these. Hopefully these might proceed along smoother paths than the defunct F-4K/M Spey Toom. Where to put the Sunderland? Who cares? It'll be a big Sunderland. And Halifax. This has raised my spirits even if just a toe-dipping exercise. Tony
  3. Your build is very encouraging Bjorn. I think the real issue is that the kit is too expensive to treat as an experiment. The cuts required are a little aggressive for the inexperienced, and that still doesn't correct the blow-up beachware look of the wings. I am still on the fence. Tony
  4. I saw a built FM Halifax bomber at Telford maybe 16 years ago and it looked mightily impressive. Always wanted one, but only where the price and ease of assembly curves intersect squarely in the joy zone. I'm guessing the most likely candidates are Hong Kong Models, ICM or Airfix. It's been a long wait and sadly may never happen. The ICM Hampden, if true, should be fun. (I'd rather Airfix did one of a number of other twin-engined subjects in long trousers scale, some of them jets, or the aforementioned Halifax). Tony
  5. Irrespective of the merits and drawbacks of the pioneering Hughes Falcon and the F/G variants used mainly on the F-106, I would love a detailed Project Six Pack 20mm rotary cannon installation for the Trumpy Six. I believe they came in around 1973+ alongside the blown canopy hood and basic lead gunsight... ...which reminds me, does anyone make a clear resin framed canopy hood for 1960s-early 1970s Sixes? The Monogram kit offered both canopies, but Trumpy only the late hood. Tony
  6. There's no guarantee there will be any 1:48 mystery releases from Airfix this year, but I hope so. However, Airfix remains in love with excessively chunky canopy framing, whereas ICM would produce quite refined clear parts. Tony
  7. The Hampden's not entirely my subject, but even I'd be tempted. Quite exciting to see Bomber Command getting a look-in in 1:48 scale.. And yes, a buildable Halifax with IM clear parts would be great. Lots of variant boxing potential. Makes me want a Trumpy Wellington and HKM Lanc to get things started. Tony
  8. Then they need more practice time. Some people are simply in the wrong job, and should be purely creational artists who stay well away from forensic art. Tony
  9. I'd be in with a MiG-21.Though am not sure there are any F-13 Fishbed Cs still flying. Tony .
  10. 29 inches long, with a span of 28 ins and a height of 9 ins. That would be quite a chunk of plastic. Tony
  11. Which is why I do 1:32 as primary scale, and have the Fisher T.7 sets for both. So two birds in the hand. Alas, the Vampire T.11 is one, in, er, the bush only. Tony
  12. On the basis of Tomas Enerdal's very useful assessment I'll wait for replacement AM wing leading edges before buying the PR kit. I do wish Airfix would give the Vampire T.11 a go, along with the T.7 Meteor and Hunter, based on their delightful single-seater kits. Right price, and very nice detail such as flaps and decal stencils. Tony
  13. I wish. A styrene Viggen, Draken, Stiletto and Skyrocket would be great. Tony
  14. Hasn't Mr Sulc already indicated that if Eduard go ahead with a new kit in 1:32 the first would be a Spitfire IX? Later considerations would be the Bf 109, Mustang — and MiG-21 (oh yeah!) I think the Zero and Hellcat were ruled out as 1:32 candidates due to being relatively slow performers in 1:48. Tony
  15. Why not? I'd prefer a Case X wing myself, but it's been eight years since the last repop so we might get lucky. I'm hoping for a cheap repop of the Six too to use as spare parts for the Trumpeter, especially the canopy parts. Also hoping they'll do a third boxing of the 1:48 Beaufighter as a VI.f with the radar nose and plain Nav/Rad bubble. But not this year, sadly. Tony
  16. Yes Hendon is excellent, though I last visited around twelve years ago. Ditto Duxford. Will do Cosford for the first time and Yeovilton again sometime over the next year, health permitting. (Also wouldn't mind finding out that H K Models have scanned a Vulcan.) Tony
  17. Spey Phantom yay and double-yay; Beaufighter excellent, truly excellent; BuffersFart 109E pass. Tony
  18. I'm glad you got there in the end. It does look tempting but I'll take the simpler 1:48 styrene options on this subject. Tony
  19. https://natchard.com/2012/09/29/written-instructions/ On the outboard pylon there was some extra metal bolted between the adaptor and TER. So the gap is small. Tony
  20. What do people use for rigging wires in 1:48? I was thinking of making the Tiggie and a Walrus and they don't look right "naked" Tony
  21. Well, it's another one for DBMK to do in 1:48 or 1:32, along with a Vampire T.11. Tony
  22. Just as sinistervampire said five years ago. But at least it looks fifty-fifty for this year, once the WW2 big money spinners have scoffed down most the picnic. Tony
  23. Amen to that. Mr Fix would make a very nice Vampire T.11. TBH, while this is a subject that really deserves 1:32 scale treatment by a firm like DBMK, I need a 1:48 place-holder. The PR kit beckons but the work/price curves don't intersect at the right joy zone coordinates Tony
