Language is a funny thing. As a Liverpool supporter, I now need to wrap my head around this new player’s name

Good luck with this.
You mentioned the Coastal Command examples. Some were GR.V’s which were analogous to the I/II, but with a different (Dowty?) undercarriage. Rejected by Bomber Command because the undercarriage was not up to snuff, it was ideal for Coastal Command Work.
As a reference, you need this booklet

Ooh this is nice. You can never have too many Lancashire Kitties!
I have the Desert Storm boxing in the ‘stalled for years’ pile. Must get back to it.

This reminds me of the other visual clue, namely when the canopy side panel is dropped into the open position, check how much space there is between the end of the frame and the top of the wing. The space on the Merlin powered P-51 is deeper.
Apparently, there is a ‘restored’ Allison engined Mustang in the US. It had a B/C fuselage. The combination is said to look distinctly ‘off’ from the side. Can’t remember which one it is though. Anyone have a picture?

Good looking build. I had the opportunity to see a couple on a day out with the IAC at Casement in the early 80’s
