  1. Ah, that takes me back! My first use of after market decals (or were they transfers in those days?) was on that kit, Triple Zilch - can't remember whose they were.

Lovely job on that Hun. :)

    Nice!

I must have built one as a younster, cos I still have one of the drop tanks and painted in streaky silver - don't remember it though!

They were and always will be Transfers - NEVER D****S! Am I alone in hating that horrid word? Does the fightback start here? :angrysoapbox.sml:

  2. I have to say that this is way out of my comfort zone, but the same article suggests that they only had the one pattern aircraft in the US. Whether they got their hands on any British stocks once they arrived in Europe I can't say. Does anyone have access to a "Windscock" book?

  3. Hi folks did all American DH4's have Liberty Engine's or were some have them built with British engine's.

According to Air International March 1985 (p.138) all American built DH-4's were powered by the Liberty and had a two bladed prop.

    Hope this helps.

  4. US service. I have seen a black and white pic of a captured, repainted machine in two tone camo - dark top and lighter underside. Could be USN or USAAF.

ATSIEU (I think that's the acronym) - immediate post war. Still in Japanese camo and markings but with ATSIEU painted in white on the fuselage. Tamiya released their original Zero in "Strange markings" boxing.

  5. my suggestion would be for a Supermarine Attacker (fits in with the period of their other classic British stuff as well as the Scimitar) and hopefully (please please please!) a Bolton Paul Balliol or even a DH. Chipmunk :speak_cool:

    cheers, Joe

BALLIOL YES YES YES (don't use the Aviation News plans as they are pants - here is a clue, have an unbroken curve from the base of the winscreen to the tip of the spinner)

    Swift - any mark

    Vampire

    Venom

    Jet Provost/Strikemaster

    Tiger Moth

......there is so much in 1/72 at least that has either been ignored or not kitted in decades

  6. No, they are from an Almark sheet. Very nicely printed but the carrier is very thick and a bit of a bugger to conceal and clean off any wash you apply.

Same hassle with the wings! I spent a bit of time thinning them down, but not too much as it was meant to be a stress buster. I think I'll pick a shake 'n bake next time, but I did enjoy the build.

    peebeep

Thank goodness it wasn't just me with the wings. I am in serious danger of finishing mine this year and if I can manage the technology I will submit it for scrutiny.

Almark - didn't they go out of production years ago?

    ttfn again

  7. Very nice build. Are those the kit stickies?

I was wondering where the Airfix version came from. I'm doing PM's TT.20 version at them moment. Yes it goes together well, but the wings - oh good grief the wings. Blunt leading edge and trailing edges several scale inches thick (think Airfix Spit Vc in 1/72 only worse). It took me days of sanding and rescribing. Is it just the TT.20 or does the FB.11 suffer the same fate? The rest of the model is simple but effective.

Incidentally, did the German target tug have the cannon blisters or not?

  8. Lovely Matt- great weathering job, something I'm not good at. It's always good to see other people's models with which to take inspiration!

As an observation (not a ctitisism) is the armament. There are plenty of pictures of Vc's being delivered with 4x20mm Hispano cannon but not many in action with this combo. "Spitfires Over the Mediterranean & North Africa" (a Del Prado reprint of an Osprey title) shows several aircraft so fitted but says on p.12 that on one delivery at least, only two were loaded to save weight. My understanding from somewhere is that two cannon were removed on arrival to lighten the airframe. Photos on p.17 and 18 show aircraft with only two cannon; it's not possible to determine whether those on p.17 are Vb's or c's, but that on p.18 BR586 "T-M" is a Vc. It is entirely possible that some had the 4x20mm armament as operational needs on Malta may have dictated this, but if anyone else can prove one way or another that T-B had this combo, can they share the info with the rest of us?

Sorry but I'm not a rivet counter nor a member of the Spiterati (honest!), just curious as to whether there is a definitive answer. After all Malta was a hell hole and the last thing on anybody's minds was to take time out to write things down with one eye on history.

  10. We ARE an IPMS branch... a virtual one... one of two. There's supposed to be a Chester IPMS branch, and I think there's one in Neston too, oh, and one in Warrington. I never got round to visiting any before I set up Britmodeller though, and heard that the Chester branch was mainly armour modellers. Wasn't into armour at the time though

A lot of Britmodellers (self included) seem to get together with people near them though.. it's a good way of networking, and could eventually lead to some more "real world" branches in due course, I guess?

Thanks for the info, I'll keep my eyes peeled for virtual gatherings.

    Happy modelling!

  11. Geographically? How's that for obtuse? On a bad day, I'm 20 minutes from Chester town centre. On a worse day, it'd probably take me a couple of hours to walk, stagger, crawl, and hitch my way into town.

Still getting the hang of this blogging mularky. Is there an IPMS branch here - the last venue was flattened? I promise to keep to modelling topics from now on.........

  12. :owww: You went through the whole registration process just for that dreadful howler!??!?!? Where abouts on the Wirral are you?

Yup!!!: I'm surprised no-one bagged that obvious one before me - I'm so chuffed! Geographically 20 mins from Chester city centre.
