Having to use a second kit for spares is very decadent and I'm very embarrassed, but sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do !
I know I've been making this look a lot harder than it really is, but I've been trying lots of things with this build that I've never thought I'd have the guts to try before. (Hell, I'm even beginning to think I can pull off the paintwork job when I get there )
Would you believe that I'm even tinkering with the idea of another A-model kit (not another Yak mind) ?

Count me in with a Welsh Models 747-SP in it's original SAA guise.
Also having a look at doing a 737-700 in something else from Africa.

Apologies for the low profile, but work commitments have made me feel like I've spent a couple of weeks in the Lubyanka.
On a positive note, it gave me the chance to clear my head and think about the error of my ways :
Looks like I've bitten off more than I can glue........
.....so at the risk of being sent back to the cells, it's time to confess.....
After an enforced whip around the commune, I bought another A-model Yak-28 to carve up and use it for spares.
First up was to completely remove the remains of the port wing shoulder from the fuselage. Once the replacement part had been hacked off the donor kit, it was just down to some very careful trimming and sanding and dry-fitting (ad nauseum). Eventually, the part was ready to fit, so it was glued onto the fuselage and a couple of pins were added to it so the wing had something to attach to.
While waiting for the glue to dry on the shoulder transplant, I figured that I might as well replace the replacement I made for my replacement canopy for the navigator's compartment, so it was back to the donor kit (why do something the easy way ???).
Job done on the fuselage. Now it was time to get back to the wings......
50 gallons of Red Bull later and I got wings 'n engines (and a rescribing job to boot !). There are quite a few air scoops that need to be added to the engines, but these will be fitted once the wings have been blended into the fuselage
Next thing on the agenda is to glue the wings to the fuselage and fill in the gaps. (Couldn't resist the temptation to add a couple of pics of the dry-fit)
Of course, the transparent nose-cone is hanging in the back of my mind, but now I'm armed with a spare from the donor kit, I'm beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel..................

Yeah ! Cracking job on the MiG Laurent, and nice to have you back in the party.
I'm still beetling away with the wings and engine nacelles while I'm waiting for the corrective shoulder surgery to dry on the port side.
Popped a couple of bracing struts made from scrap sprue inside each nacelle in order to reduce the filling on the joins under the wings. Sorted out the starboard wing to some extent, but rubbing the palms of my hands raw mixing up Milliput all the time !
The brass tubing seems to have done the job - no seams !
Don't worry - wife's toothbrush will clean the old exhausts out before they get painted. (and I bet she doesn't even notice the taste of primer )

p.s. Many Thanks to the Generalissimo for the photos of his resin Yak. Started making me wonder about the accuracy of my kit with regards to the rear undercarriage bay being to far to the rear (?). Managed to find some drawings on the net that made me feel warm and fuzzy, only to realise that with all the sanding going on, there was enough white dust in our house to keep a sniffer-dog interested - must go lie down now.
Not quite the same variant, but interesting none the less.....

Glad to see you've finally lifted the lid off the box. Can't tell you how happy I am to see your sprues are as thick as the brows of my Russian girl-friend. Time to crack open the old Vodka and whip out the chain-saw, I say - this is going to be fun !

Finally, after finishing another group build & a BF109 for my local clubs comp., Komrad Keefski is lagging well behind but, because of that, in the best traditions of the motherland, it just makes me feel more empowered to catch up with all the other glorious groupbuilders....or something like that!!
Anyway, I finally made a start yesterday - I opened the box & took a picture of the parts!!!
Here they are. Mmmmm. Exciting. Yes??!!
I then commenced construction by cutting out the cockpit components (notice all the c word's? just like CCCP. Ha!) But due to rumours of there being prying western imperialist spies lurking about, I am afraid pictures of that procedure must remain secret(actually, my camera batteries went flat so I couldn't take any. Not that they would have made rivetting viewing in any case! )
And now my friendskis a question. Do any of you know what colour Komrad Yakovlev would have instructed his glorious workforce to paint the inside of his shiny silver fighter jet? The favourite idea seems to be light grey, but others seem to go for the more restful turquoise green (blue?) colour so favoured by lesser design bureaus such as Mikoyan??!!
Anyone know?

PS - do you have any references (propoganda or otherwise) that show the cockpits to be grey? I tried to start my -25 build yesterday but stalled at the first hurdle - painting the interior! A-model say nothing (they probably still think its a secret!) and all I can find by googling is various model builds, some with grey & some with turquoise 'pits......
Ah Comrade Keef. Are you going Western on me, worrying about trivial things like cockpit colour !!!? Paint it whatever you want ! It's not quality we're interested in but quantity. I need you and Comrade Laurent (Hell, I hope he hasn't defected) to help me churn out as many of these Yak beasties as possible !
On a serious note, my A-model instructions call for Humbrol 67 as a cockpit colour, but I thought that would be a bit too dark, so I used Humbrol 145. (As far as the turquoise colour is concerned, I think it was more of a modern thing, although I do admit to being tempted) The only decent photo I could find on the net isn't currently available (http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/showthread.php?t=73556)
Hope to see some of your progress shots. I need to know I'm not alone.......

Just noticed this, nice job Mike. Amodels Yaks and their TU 128 are probably the toughest of the line to build well, broken down to to many parts, asymetrical wings and engines a lot of wet and dry, swearing, dry fitting, swearing, filler and more swearing is a must .

General, Oh General.......where were you on 17 October before I got myself into this ????
I thought it was just an overdose of polystyrene ingestion, but the asymmetrical wings have been causing a few sleepless nights.
The starboard side looks to be okay...
...but the trailing edge of the port side is a couple of millimetres too high. I reckon if I ignored the problem, the Yak could end up flying in circles, so it was out with the Dremel and some sandpaper.
Hack the wing root off under the arm-pit and sand to shape
The idea will be to glue the starboard wing on and then position the port wing to the same incidence. Gap will be filled with a mixture of sanity and Expandafoam
In the mean time, I need to confess to a minor disaster in typical understated Soviet fashion (it happened a couple of weeks ago). Some of the Russian text has been translated into English (the bits in the brackets) :
"After giving the fuselage a coat of Halford's primer, I accidentally knocked the model off the work bench. This resulted in a teeny-weeny scratch on the tail (it actually broke away from the fuselage completely) and there was a microscopic star-crack on the navigator's canopy (it popped out of the fuselage, never to be seen again). Nothing to be worried about and no-one was injured. (I'm still trying to explain to the missus where I learnt those words, and the childrens' ears have just stopped bleeding). Repairs have been made and work has started on marrying the engine nacelles to the wings. (Oh God, when will this group build come to an end ???)."
Still having fun, mind....

Just finished it this afternoon after giving myself a KUTA !
Taken absolute ages to finish this off because I lost interest about 95% of the way through. Had to dispatch it to the loft for a couple of months, and by the time I brought it down last week to finish it off, I couldn't remember what paints I was using. Dull or what ?
Nice kit - just made it more complicated than I should have. Painted the rudder, used Castles from the spares box and a Castle or two from the fridge (lager that is) amongst other things.

The A320 that I bought is the Northwest Airlines but the decals are not that good spoke to Densil and he said he would send me a new batch but I may do the Ailitalia one, just finished my 1/72 737 T43-A. I think the Airbus might be easier to build but I am going to cut out all the windows and open up the baggage doors so may take a while plus I have started to build my DH Devon. If you want to see the parts for the A320 they show this on the Welsh site.
Thanks Kev. If it comes out anything like your T43-A it's bound to be a cracker.
With regards to the A320, I have to admit that the thought of cutting out all of the windows sends shivers up my spine. Any thoughts on how you're going to be approaching that ? (I'm hoping like hell you don't come up with an easy solution, 'cos it will give me an excuse to get the 737-700)

Hello again - this time in Swahili
Zvedza Boeing 767 finished off with some bits from the Draw decals sheet.
I've read some good stuff about the kit - looking at the sprues confirmed the stories.
I've also read some horror stories about the kit - once off the sprues, the parts were so warped I didn't think I could get them together. I swear, joining the fuselage halves was like trying to glue two bananas together - back to back !!! Brute force and ignorance saved the day, but it was a close shave. I've checked my other Zvedza 767 and it looks okay, so I guess this one was just unlucky.
Tried painting the tail bits myself and pretty pleased with the outcome although the green is too dark and the red is too thick. Having said that, the masking was a heap of fun !
Anyway, enough sob stories, on with the pics.

Back again with the glasshouse on the front.
As you may have noticed from previous posts, the glasshouse at the front is split vertically in two pieces. Not having a vacform machine, there was no way that I could do a single mould. I've had to do two halves as well, but the idea is to split it down the frame lines along the side
- Before with the glasshouse glued together and polished up. (The tape framelines were added after the moulding process and will be used as a guide for cutting the acetate)
- After the acetate copies have been made (one of the bottom half and the other of the top half)
- Pieces cut to size. Now need to think of a way to stick them together without damaging them.
In the mean time, it's time to have a look at the wings :
(Gotta love all of the flash and rough bits !)
Jumping the gun quite a bit, I couldn't resist the temptation to try the bits together. (New navigator's canopy glued into place and faired in with superglue)
Quite optimistic that this can be beaten into submission ! (Laurent - if you're out there - keep plugging away mate.)
Of course, building it is the easy bit. I usually stuff up the models when it comes to painting them.

What other items did you buy from Welshmodels, I recently bought the 1/72 Airbus A320, very nice kit.
I bought a 747sp and a Super VC-10.
I'm pretty tempted with one of their 1/72 737-700's but I've already got a 747sp and a Super VC-10 insulating the loft thanks to my little incident with the Caravelle.
(Damn..... I've got to stop buying models.)
What colour scheme are you going to finish your A320 in ? Any possibility of some photos of the kit parts ?
