  1. I can announce that the laggards will be in with a chance of winning the wonderful Academy 1/48 Mirage IIIR

    Cheers Chairman W.

Just cancelled my appearance at church tomorrow so I can finish my build.

Don't really want to run the risk of winning the Mirage (already have one in the stash you see......)

  2. Funny, I always thought it was Llanelli. Or was that the bearded ladies.....

    Thanks guys!

    Keef

Flippin' Hell - you've done it now !

Just got home from work and the computer had been left on with your latest post. Kids tell me that mum was last seen heading towards Swansea with an axe in the back of her car and a frown upon her face. (At least they think it was a frown - difficult to tell when you only got one eye-brow)

Let me know if she pops by (she'll be the one with the beard.) :boxing:

In the meantime, I got some work to do on my Yak.

    cheers

  3. Lovely job with the paint-work Comrade cr0c. Wish I could sneak one of those past the gate-guard but she's on high-alert after my Equipage wheels arrived from the Ukraine.

Rotten luck with the accident, but I'm sure you'll be up on your legs (and wheels) soon.

  4. Jumpin' Joe ! (Stalin that is)

That plane looks almost ..... respectable. Cracking job on the build so far.

(If I didn't know any better, I'd think you were a huge Swansea woman with hairy arms and a 20 lb sledge hammer :evil_laugh: )

However despite ensuring that I used the same outside diameter tube as the kit pieces, when I attempted to stick the nacelles together, of course they wouldn't (stick together that is!!) So, after much grinding with the dremel, sanding, filing, cursing, grinding, sanding & cursing, they finally went together with much superglue, epoxy & a smidgin of filler!

Funny..I remember going through the same procedure. :analintruder:

Looking forward to seeing the finished article.

    Regards

    mikoyan

  5. Mine are staying plastic!

PAH, Comrade Keefski !!! Staying plastic is the kind of thing that imperialists (and those who live on the dark side of the Loughor) would resort to !

Theses babies are the dog's doodies AND they're made in Mother Russia !

    12o.jpg12q.jpg

PLUS, I didn't have to paint the tyres !

With regards to the Yak, I'm pleased to say that after my disastrous weekend, I'm seeing stars......I MEAN I'M REALLY SEEING STARS......and they're RED.......and they got WHITE borders...and...and... !!!

    12p.jpg

...we're nearly there (Thank God I hear you all groan....)

  6. ... (damn someone's asking for news)... ahem... well I've sprayed the Mid Stone and I've noticed that I've forgotten to rescribe some panel lines. I've rescribed them and I've just resprayed a coat. I didn't do any other colour yet. Considering the amount of time I can spend on the kit (1 hour per day even on weekends... work, two young kids, etc) and the time that it takes for Humbrol enamel paint to dry, I'm afraid that I won't be able to finish the model in time. I'm still working on it though. Do the moderators lock threads when the deadline is met ?

You keep plugging away mate - you're over the worst bit.

  7. No Laurent.... Mike not finished...... Mike trying to repair damage done to paintwork by Klear-coat, decals, methylated spirits, Humbrol enamels, promodeller wash, sandpaper, bare-metal foil, more Humbrol enamels and.....uh.....Mike himself.

I'm getting there, but it's pretty slow. The good news is that the Equipage wheels arrived from Armory, but now I'm scratching my head as to how I'm going to replace the microscopic outrigger wheels with resin and rubber replacements. Should have it finished in time, but only if my missus lets me have a weekend off for good behaviour.

  8. I believe that weathering should be suggested, not thrown at the face of the guy who's watching the model. A not overdone pre-shading may not be visible in photographs and that's fine with me.

:ditto: Thanks Laurent - I like your thought process 'cos it matches mine.

With regards to the pre-shade, it didn't quite work out the way I thought it would, but what the Hell - sometimes you try something and sometimes you fail - the secret is to keep trying.

Having said that, I'm still pretty pleased with the way it's come out before I put the decals on, and that's not something I've been able to say very often !!!

    cheers

  9. Bing.... (Humbrol 63 Sand)

    12l.jpg

    Bang.... (Humbrol 84 Mid Stone)

    12m.jpg

    Bosh.... (Humbrol 186 Brown)

    12n.jpg

Airbrushed free-hand and didn't enjoy the experience (never do)

Humbrol 65 Aircraft Blue on tomorrow followed by Klear and the decals.

Pre-shading is there (just) - photos don't do it justice (and that's my excuse)

You know, if I stand on top of my compressor, I'm sure I can see the finish line.

(Keef - Thanks for the offer of the tan nozzle. I ordered a couple from Dave Cropper (Croppers Models) and they arrived within 48 hours - top man. I've subsequently found out that the problem wasn't with the nozzle, but rather with the Humbrol Thinners I was using - causing the Humbrol paint to flocculate in the paint cup and bunging up the nozzle. Good news is that I now have spare tan nozzles if you're ever in the same boat. - cheers anyway)

  10. Very nice looking ! Are you planning to do the three or four colours camo scheme ? If so I wonder if the preshading won't disappear under the multiple paint layers.

FYI I'm not in the primer stage yet. This model is almost as heavy as a resin model !

    Cheers Laurent.

I'm going for the Sand / Mid-Stone / Brown topping over Light Blue scheme. The idea will be to paint each individual colour patch, so hopefully the preshading won't disappear completely.

To be honest, I'm pretty apprehensive - I've messed up more than a few models with botched paint jobs and a three-colour camo scheme could just send this Yak to the polystyrene recycling centre.

Thanks for the tip-off about Armory UA by the way. I ordered some Equipage wheels and they should be winging their way across from the Ukraine as we speak. (Hope they get here in time, because the A-model wheels are not brilliant)

Looking forward to seeing some more of your Yak too.

  11. Thanks for the kind comments.

    Inching ever closer.......

    Primer on :

    12j.jpg

Followed by the addition of tail feathers and sharp pointy things on the wings, engine and exhausts sprayed and masked off and pre-shade on :

    12k.jpg

Followed by.....the tan nozzle on my airbrush deciding to kick up daisies and the realization that I don't have the right paint colours to finish the job.

    ...and time slips by.....

(Be warned - this could still be a step-by-step process to a heartbreak)

  12. ....and last, but by no means least :

RULE No. 5 : You must NOT be influenced by any of the builds, and under NO circumstances should you purchase models as a result thereof.

Thanks to Antoine's MiG-31, and the Tu-22 that Seamus is building, I've just broken one of the rules. (Mr Croc's Su-27 isn't helping my addiction, but I'm resisting the temptation - barely.....)

Damn it comrades - you're killing my wallet :angrysoapbox.sml:

  13. Cheers Comrade Keef - you're too kind.

Of course I couldn't wait until tomorrow to have a crack at the masking job, so here we go...

After having sanded off all of the glass-house frame lines, the first thing to do is to make new ones using thin strips of Tamiya tape. Once completed, small pieces of bare-metal foil are cut roughly to size, worked into the clear sections (the bits that need to be masked) and then rubbed down against the new frame lines. Once that's been done, a sharp blade is used to trim the foil against the new frame lines. You should end up with something looking like this :

    13a.jpg

Remove the new frame lines and you should be ready for painting :

    13b.jpg

Watch these spaces - they should be getting plastered with the interior colour tomorrow. (Keep your fingers crossed - I might be making my name mud from here to the Berlin Wall)

    mike

  14. Inch by inch.......

Managed to glue the glass-house onto the front, fair it in, and polish it up - Twice ! (It snapped off on my first attempt)

    12h.jpg

    12g.jpg

Need to wait for the Johnson's Klear to harden overnight before making some frame lines out of thin strips of Tamiya tape and then masking with bare-metal foil.

In the mean-time, I've ordered some Equipage wheels and I'm hoping they will arrive before the end of January.

No sooner do I think I'm over the worst, than I remember the painting is still ahead - not my strong point to say the least.

Comments, criticism and advice always welcome.

  15. Not much to report, but I figured while I'm boring you all to death, I may as well do a proper job....

Wings 'n things glued on and faired in with Milliput. Air scoops on engines reamed out and glued on. Canopy and windscreen fitted and faired in with superglue (but only after a polish and dip in Kear)

    12d.jpg

    Glass house on the front.......

What can I say ? I chickened out of using my acetate replacements for a couple of reasons :

I couldn't see any satisfactory way of joining the two halves together without messing it up. Even if I could, the acetate parts are so thin that I don't think there would have been enough support for the probe to be added on the end.

Only obvious solution (and the easiest) was to use the spare parts from the donor kit, so that's what I did.

Canopy masked up using bare metal foil, cut with a new blade. (Tried this out on my MiG-17 and it worked a treat - we'll see if it works again)

    12e.jpg

I think I'm going to be doing some painting in the New Year !

Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas !
