  1. Great build, love the choice of colours. Nicely weathered. I'm no expert on the SLUF, so can't pick faults with the kit, it looks like a SLUF and it's sure as hell modelled well.
  2. Lovely, particularly like the oil stains and weathering around the wing roots
  3. Hi guys, My first of 2011 following on from the Stringbag late last year. I was attracted to it's unusual design and bought this at the Telford show last year. This is my first attempt at using acrylics which went better than I thought and really pleased with the benefits namely low odour and lower drying time. Painted in Tamiya Dark Green with Humbrol rattle cans for varnish. Pretty much OOB except for a bit of detailing inside the driver and gunner positions. The seat cushions (although not historically accurate, sorry if you're a purist) were made from bits of bluetack. Panel wash was done with a home made solution - N&W water colour, Testers acrylic thinners and a spot of fairy liquid to break down the surface tension. Further weathering was done with dry pastel brushing. The detailing was completed yesterday, although doing that rigging with a hangover was hard going to say the least !!! Overall, happy with it, although there's a few mistakes and painting glitches. I had to use roundels from the spares pile as the ones in the kit were complete bobbins. The yellow decals were over painted due to them being quite transparent over the dark green. Anyway, hope you like (if you can like this aircraft !!) Thanks for looking. Here's to a great 2011 for modelling, Neil
  4. My Christmas wish has come true, how cool. Off now to wish for a lottery win !
  5. That's much better than their old kit (just made one with my 5 year old son !). Nicely painted too, very neat
  6. Lovely build and a more unusual scheme for the A1
  7. One of them is partially restored in the Malta war museum if I remember from a holiday there as a kid. That's where I first heard of this trio.
  8. I've got a few vac form canopies in the stash that have yellowed, however I built several models in the 90's using the Falcon sets and these don't appear to have yellowed at all, still look good.
  9. Great build, great scheme, nice way to finish the year.
  10. Superb, like the choice of markings, breaks the grey up well.
  11. I'll pick some up and have a go, cheers
  12. Great thread, great question, well answered, I'm on the look out too, although the stash seems to be growing faster than my output to Mrs W's delight !!!!!!
  13. I;ve built the Hasegawa Memphis Belle many years ago and think it's a lovely kit. The Academy kit gets very good reviews, but the thing that puts me off it is the engine nacelles, they look wrong on it, where as Hasegawa seem to have got them spot on.
  14. Very nice, great paint job. Not built a Phantom since I was a kid, and never built a UK model, but very inspired to get one on the 2011 list in these colours.
  15. She's looking good. Those masks really do improve it over decals. Looking forward to seeing the wings go on.
  16. Even better when there is histopry behind the build, looking forward to seeing the pics Mike.
  17. Thanks guys. I've ordered some Xtracrylix paints and look forward to giving them a go. Once I get used to them, they will serve my lack of patience much better than the enamels. I dare say my models will improve as well due to less finger prints in the damn paint !!!!
  18. Thanks Andy. Do you add the gloss to the paint when spraying or add afterwards ?

    Varnish

When airbrushing the W&N stuff, do you thin it ? If so, by how much ? Just had my first dabble with acrylics and noticed this stuff in Hobbycraft, not cheap, but should last a long time.
  20. I've had my first experiments today with acrylics after being a life long user of enamels. I've experimented using screen wash as a thinner and cleaning agent and also tried using Testors acrylic thinner which seems to work better as a thinner, so that's what I'll stick with (not for cleaning as it's too expensive !!). Also used Tamiya and Humbrol acrylics on test pieces. The Tamiya pigment seems better, but for some reason, the Humbrol seems to come out better once under a coat of Humbrol spray varnish. So my questions are: 1. Are the Xtracrylics a good swap for Xtracolour in terms of colour matching ? 2. I prefer to coat the external surfaces of my aircraft models in gloss to aid decal fixing. Are the Xtracrylics gloss finish ? 3. If not, what do you guys do to get the gloss finish, do you add some kind of gloss agent to the paint or varnish afterwards ? Any advice appreciated. I have to say, I'm really impressed with the benefits of acrylics, fast drying times, no solvent smells and so far, found them quite easy to use as long as you put a very fine coat down first to prevent beading. Cheers Neil
  21. Are you trying to get me in trouble with the missus ? Splendid idea, thankyou for your suggestion, that sure does look like a nice conversion kit
