British Airways Fairey Rotodyne! Red Tail Delight!
woody37 replied to woody37's topic in Work in Progress - Aircraft
Managed to get some more....well sanding done today! I'm going to cheat on the inside copying what Gregg did in the video shared by Rayprit above and cut out some seat shaped profiles. The strip of plastic below the windows is to glue them to. The door has been filled. My plan for this is to paint the door shape with the reverse colours that are often used to highlight doors and exit windows. Doing the engines has been fiddly. I've tried to retain the raised detail so care had to be taken smoothing the seams. I've also re-rivetted the surfaces of one of the wings although you can't really see here. The other wing is still in progress... Whilst things dry, the tail feathers are getting treated as well. There's a hole in the top of the wing at the rear, does anyone know what they are? Thanks Neil- 146 replies

That looks stunning. It may be a little left field in design, but looks so right in that scheme! -

Lovely build. I've been thinking of getting one, how did it go together? -

Absolutely, welcome aboard! Please do share when you start, I was considering this scheme too Feel free to share some pics if you have any Hi Ian, Yes, the Negus scheme. I wasn't intending to add an interior, but having quickly looked at the video that Rayprit shared, I may just add some seat shaped profiles. Probably add a few assumed exterior details that it may of had if in service, creative license and all! I'm half way to rotordom with this Bill, I'd love to see your take on one Have you got any pics Paul? Welcome aboard, the more the merrier! Thanks, that is a brilliant reference, lots of good tips in there that I'll be using Cheers Neil -

Thanks James, I've never entered a competition TBH, it's not what motivates me. I enjoy the research and nostalgia more than anything. These guys are heroes, so it's my small way of doing a tribute to them. I might bring it along though for the 8th AF Sig display along with a few others. We've already booked some accommodation so will be there for both days and a trip to Cosford on the Friday -
Thanks Ian, it was fun doing it! I tend to do most bombers in 1/72 due to size. How about a 1/72 airliner next? But not as we know it! Have a look in the WIP section as I've already started! I didn't know there was any B-24's left so long after the war, I'm rather jealous of that opportunity now! Thanks Kev, I'm not sure actually, I need a think, certainly done most of the common ones, but perhaps some of the lesser used ones might need adding to the collection. Hi Andy, yes, hopefully, the new Airfix kit will make them more affordable. That said, my build rate is so low, this is a cheap hobby for a petrol head! This was a kit I'd had in the stash for several years, but also have the Riders in the Sky box and some coastal command overtree sets which have some excellent alternative parts. Cheers Neil

Couldn't resist this one! One of the classics, but wanted to go off-piste and do a What-if scheme. I'll add the story when it gets to RFI, but for now, it's rivet bashing! There are some deepish sink marks in the fuselage halves so removing them would of destroyed the rivets anyway so why not take them all off? That's what I'm up to now. The plan is to have the British airways text across the rotor gearbox fairing with the tails in the red tail markings, other than that, there is no plan, simply learning about this aircraft as I go! There's even going to be some subtle weathering from years of faithful service reaching the more remote parts of the UK! more later,

A lovely build, but a sad story behind it. What a great tribute for all to see at the museum -

When ever I look at the plastic in these kits, it looks horrendous, but you've shown what can be done, lovely build -
A superb build, we produced some beautiful aircraft in the UK, this is a great tribute to one of them

Wow, not sure how I missed this, absolute stunner. -
Thanks, I'm still learning with oils, this was the perfect playground for one! The great thing is, if you're not happy, you can wipe it off as long as the varnish underneath doesn't react to white spirit. Thanks Bill, panel at a time. I've followed various tutorials on applying oils, the thing that improved my results was having a separate brush for applying then a soft narrow but flat brush for working them in. On the silver, it was mostly burnt umber and black. Thanks, I did a wash originally to get some into the panel lines, but the heavy stuff is neat oil paint. Apply dabs of it then work it in and blend it. Once the semi-matt coat was added, I also used soft pastel to do the finer elements in places such as panel lines behind the engines. Thanks for all the kind comments guys. Whilst I've used oils before, this was the first one that I'd used them in full fat mode so it was a learning ground. It's given me the appetite to do the Monogram 1/48 B-24D now too! Cheers Neil

No, I might do it, but I tend to forget they're there and snap them picking it up! Thanks Mike, I enjoy doing the weathering, the extra on this was what made it more fun! -
This has been a really enjoyable build, in part because I've done less cock ups that needed correction than normal! A lovely kit although needs a bit of additional detail inside. That said, not much can be seen so it probably doesn't really, but that's modellers for you! Most noticeable mods are the St. Paul bay window modification to the waist guns, although one of the guns should be in a forward pane to create a staggered layout, I only noticed after gluing the damn things in! The other thing I've chose to omit is the armoured cockpit panels (for fear of ruining them!), the windscreen is not the right one for the real aircraft too. I've tried to weather it as it appeared in later photographs when the bay windows were fitted and armoured side panels for the cockpit. Paint was MRP Super Silver mostly over the MRP black primer base, with some other colours mixed in such as MRP Duraluminium. Some after market bits too, the Eduard bomb bay doors and some Plus Model resin wheels. The build is https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235134024-hasegawa-172-b-24j-kentucky-belle/ The real aircraft: And the model: I've made a few colour assumptions looking at the photo's, although looking at other builds, some have painted differently. Not sure if they had other references to hand that may draw a different conclusion, but I've painted white rings around the nacelles and the H on the tail in white too. I redid the grass on a base I use for some pics too after inspiration from some of the builds on here with amazing bases, something i want to do more of. Sorry for all the pictures! Cheers Neil

Ready for RFI: HERE Thanks for all the encouragement along the way, it's a happy time for Lib lovers at the moment with the release of two new kits although the B-17 is generally getting more love at the moment due to a certain series!
