Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 32 scratchbuilt Yacht
ZooL replied to ZooL's topic in Work in Progress - Maritime
Rich, I am doubling up on the major parts just in case I make a mess of it but you would be welcome to the its that I dont use. There will no doubt be a hull going spare and probably a deck (will need some adjusting though I just realised its not quite right so will have to do another one I think). Just bear in mind there will be lots of work to do after the fiberglassing, lots of sanding and filling, i amgoing to use car body filler I think. But you will be welcom to what I dont use so long as you dont mind paying the shipping costs..... no pun intended. Cheers Z -

Done a bit more over the weekend, over all the fiberglassing has gone pretty well and isnt too difficult. Its pretty messy, but fun. Lots of particularly horrible fumes are produced so make sure you have all the PPE if you do it. Here are some of the results so far, the first is just my practice attempt to get the hang of it. This is a much better one, I have made a couple of these incase I bugger it up. And the Top (mold) GRP And the line up! Thanks for looking! Z -
Do you guys all work for milliput? Jebus I want to go out and buy some and i dont really have a reason to! Nice build looking on with much interest! Z

fibreglassing? Anyone have any experience?

Hi guys, Have started the project for my wip the link is Here -
Hi Guys, You may have seen my other posts in the maritime forum looking for advice on fibreglassing here is my WIP. I am making this model for my Dad, he has one of these boats and I thought he would like something to look at when he isnt on it. I have never entered the world of scrtchbuilding before, nevermind the complexities of fibreglassing so this could be an interesting one... I have just got through my fibreglass materials and will hopefully be giving it a crack this weekend on the Hull. As i haven't done this scratchbuilding lark before any and all advice is most gratefully recieved. there have been questions asked about why I have chosen to go down the route of fibreglass for the main parts I will try to answer now. Yes I could build it as I have been building the mold and have a big solid model of the yacht but I wanted to make it hollow and I couldnt really think of how to do it otherwise (i want to put the internal features in there too). I have never done fiberglassing before either and am interested in the process. Often for me it is as interesting to learn a new technique as it is to make the model its self. Here is my work so far...... The first couple of images are of the basic shape, as I dont have decent plans I have only put in a couple of shapers and am letting my eye do the rest from pictures. The one that looks like the creature form the lost lagoon is after applying the expanding foam which was a suggestion from one of the members of this illustrious site, I did have a problem here however, I applied too much and it did exaclty as it said on the tin and expanded.....a lot. Then come the pictures after the application of normal household filler, easy to shape but lots of dust created. And finally all the fiberglassing bumf I got, lots of lovely chemicals to play with here.... resin, catalyst, asatone and the matting. on to the difficult bit.....

ZooL replied to ZooL's topic in General Maritime modelling chat
Unfortunately not, suffer from sea sickness if the boat is under the size of a ferry. kindof hoping this project doesnt make me feel the same..... I got the resin and matting from a company called east coast fiberglass, hopefully I have ordered the right stuff.... only time will tell. -

http://www.jeanneau.fr/2007/?r=yacht&p...;n=307&nl=6 Here is a link to the boat I will be making, if it doesnt go tits up... My dad has one and I thought I would make him something to look at when he isnt on it. I havent even had a chance to think about all the other 'bumf' I will need to finish it off, think that process is quite a way off. But all pointers appreciated. Its not going to be a "floater" just a display model, though no doubt I will give it a try in the bath at some point. (as you do...) I have just started making what I hope will be good enough for the 'plug' and its going to be 377 mm (ish) in lengthwhich means its going to be rather tall. I ahve found my mast already i think, i have an old net curtain rail that seems to be exaclty the same shape and correct thickness for the mast, convenient to say the least. I have just ordered some matting and resin, its surprisingly cheap so hopefully it will turn up soon and I can have a play. Cheers Tom -
fibreglassing? Anyone have any experience?
ZooL replied to ZooL's topic in General Maritime modelling chat
Free labour assistant, there is an opening on this project..... hehe thanks for the step by step, there doesnt seem to be that much info on this kind of modelling out there so this is great. Quick question.... do you need to soak the matting or just put it on the plug and apply the resin to the outside? presumably it will soak through? Cheers TOm -
fibreglassing? Anyone have any experience?
ZooL replied to ZooL's topic in General Maritime modelling chat
There are a couple of reasons I want to use fiberglass: 1. I want to give the techique a try, I have never done it before and would like to give it a crack. Once I have the stuff I can use it for other projects too if it is suitable. 2. It seems a good way of getting a thin hull so I can have some interior detail. I think it would be difficult to do this using the master. I may be crazy but i think it is worth a go, maybe because its more diffficult isnt a good reason not to do it in the world of modelling. Cheers for the post hope I have explained my mentalness. TOm -
fibreglassing? Anyone have any experience?
ZooL replied to ZooL's topic in General Maritime modelling chat
Hi Jen, I dont need it to be hollow but would like it to be, would be nice to see some of the interior at least, hence going for the fiberglass approach. As for the plans, I have plans of a sort. There are a few drawings in the manual for the boat, none of which have dimensions on them but look to scale. So far I have managed to make up some plans of my own by using the manual, should be enough when I have finished them. any pitfalls you came accross when making your yacht? Cheers Tom -

Ah, that is usefull to see it in process. It appears that a few people have experience of using it for fixing cars my dad being one of them. Its bit of a leap to making things from scratch though I think. Cheers Keef very usefull link. Tom -
No one seems to have any info on scratch building a yacht, not surprising really I suppose cant imagine there are that many people making them. If I can be a little more general it might help. Doeas anyone have any experience of fibreglassing a Hull? or anything for that matter. I think it is probably the way to go for my yacht model. whats the best way to go about it? It will be about 50 cm long. How do I make the plug/mold? whats the best material. whats the best matting to use? its in weight per metre square. how does this equate to thickness of the finished part? anything to do with epoxt will be a help too. When I do get around to this I wil do a WIP so you can all have a good laugh at my efforts. Cheers Guys Z

Bugger! I was hoping you would say aluninium covered, i have an idea of how to do the damage it it was. Probably using aluminium foil.... Any ideas how to do damage to canvas covered? at bit of a loss now. Cheers Z

I Am in the process of making an Me 109 and want to do some battle damage to the rudder, what was the origional made from? metal spars and aliminium covering or canvas covering? Any info gratefully recieved or any pictures of battle damage most appreciated. Cheers guys z

I like it I like it a lot! Good job!

Hey regulus, Can I ask, where did you get the part from? Do you know what machine it was made on? Envisiontec, objet? Just as a matter of interest. Cheers Z

Hi guys, I have this crazy notion that I will make a scale model of my dads yacht (sounds a bit poncy but we are common really!! ) He has a 32ft sailer and I think he would appreciate a model of it. Unfortunately there are no kits of it, not surprising really. But a good opportunity to step into the voodoo world of scratch building. The PROBLEM: I dont have a clue about scratch building boats. does anyone know where i can find some information on how to, what stuff, where from? I want to make a pretty good job of it so all help would be greatfully recieved. Thanks Guys. Z
