  1. Hmm, that image from the Academy catalogue looks like a two seater to me otherwise how would the rear gun be fired?
  2. Hi Everyone, IPMS Avon is pleased to be able to confirm our Annual Show is on for 2023. This years event will be on Sunday 6th August and our ambition is to once more fill all three sports halls at the Thornbury Leisure Centre. We will be sending out invitations to Clubs, SiGs and Traders in early March, but interest is already high, so we can take enquiries of interest via our club email at [email protected]. Bookings can't be confirmed until later in the year but we are going to do our best to put in a bumper show in 2023. Look forward to seeing you all there in August
  3. I fitted the closed canopy which if I recall was slightly too narrow for the fuselage. When I removed the masking, not only had paint somehow got inside the now closed fuselage, but the canopy had lots of tiny stress cracks where I had clamped it to the fuselage to spread it slightly while it dried. I think the paint got in past the odd PE panel in the lower nose which kept detaching itself, and the stress cracks were down to me. I considered removing the canopy and replacing it with a mix of the open parts and a vac form , since you are right, the sections won't stack properly. However getting the canopy off caused more damage that I was prepared to bother with as I had become disheartened with the kit. Up to that point I had been enjoying the build and have salvaged a lot of the completed detail parts for the one in the stash. Next one I will also probably use a Rob Taurus vac form.
  4. GWH was 1/48th. I part built one until I trashed it after a canopy disaster 😪 and have another in the stash to replace it.
  5. Hi James, Yes I spotted that one on " workbench". Certainly an option to look at. Thanks.
  6. I'm really no expert on these but knew from speaking to Fred Tooke of IPMS North Somerset at Telford that there were no 1/35 kits of SWB Land Rovers so when would the Mk IIa date from please? My Dad mainly drove Jeeps in Egypt in the early 1950's but in at least 2 pictures he and his fellow RM's are driving a Land Rover with a trailer. I might like to build that if this kit is appropriate. Thanks.
  7. Try the BDAC Museum at Old Sarum. They have a Scimitar cockpit - Exhibits (boscombedownaviationcollection.co.uk). I went there for a model show last summer and it's a great museum to clamber into a number of cockpits. Might be worth a drive from Kent. Can't remember he state of the seat in the Scimitar though.
  8. Hi James, Well I am yet to retire, although hopefullt that will be resolved later this year, so am short of hobby time, and I already bought the Dynavector Hornet to try a quality vacform so will have to think about keeping it to build. So many kits, all with definite plans to build!
  9. with the Airfix kit on the way, then surely that must be someone wanting one for the collection rather than to be built , or at least I would hope so!
  10. and I requote myself from December 23rd - anyone want a vac form ? 😀
  11. My guess is that since I just picked up a Dynavector Gannet on E Bay for a decent price, Airfix will release one in 2023....😁
  12. I checked the Mk 1 kit courtesy of Andy of Antics in Bristol. The clear parts for the Mk 1A in the were still frosted, so I will just wait for the Mk Ia boxing and hope the deliveries arrive before Christmas once the PO stop striking. Thanks for all the advice and help.
  13. Hmm, I downloaded the instructions and the torpedo is in both kits. The change to the tropical air filters is clear but the alternate parts are on the sprue. I am not sure about the canopies and turret. The turret part and " gun" nose canopy are used for the Mk Ia, but seem to be on the sprues as " do not use" in the Mk I boxing, however earlier comment in this thread suggested they are " frosted" and so could not be used to change the Mk I to a Ia. Wonder if that is the case in the production releases?
  14. So can I build a Mark 1A from the original release? I fancy building the white and EDSG version on the Xtradecal sheet. Thanks.
  15. Just an update on this thread. Although I am yet to start my first ship model in nearly 50 years, I was also on the lookout for a kit of these 4 funnel lend lease destroyers since my Grandad served on HMS Salisbury until its transfer to Canada. Although the Atlantic models kit was listed until recently, it's no longer available. I'm told if demand should increase he may mould some more, but for now, it's the Mirage/Airfix kit or second hand for the WEM/Atlantic models kit.
  16. Not a great picture but here is mine completed using those decals. They are quite a dark green colour. They seemed to match images I found on Google at the time of building. http://ipmsavon.org.uk/meetings-gallery.php?year=14#20140115-10 detail shot of the real thing https://www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&ccid=fWWKcrBm&id=85A1EE85F20E99AEAC4F507E6806193C69607FB6&thid=OIP.fWWKcrBmNnEqIo0Pehcc4gHaFc&mediaurl=https%3a%2f%2fc8.alamy.com%2fcomp%2fC4153M%2fstencil-and-national-markings-detail-on-saudi-arabian-bac
  17. And a Happy Birthday from your new neighbour too who is amazed at your productivity! Roll on retirement it seems!
  18. You are not wrong. You need three hands to fit the wings in the folded position. I did manage mine in the end. I think how I did it was to hold the aircraft fuselage in a stand with the wing stub angled towards me. I used superglue on the hinges, held the wing in place and then applied accelerator with a brush held in my mouth! Attaching the jury struts after the wings is also very tricky as you cannot see the inner surfaces of the wings. I (think) I mounted the wings with blue tac blobs and fixed one end of the struts with superglue at the right angle to meet the hole in the other wing face. Once I fitted the wings, I carefully applied glue to the open hole and pushed the strut into place. When transporting the model to a show for instance, they do wobble a bit but once glued on the hinge points and the struts they are quite firm and are a strong joint. Here is mine done- shocking to think this was finished in June 2016! http://ipmsavon.org.uk/meetings-gallery.php?year=16#20160518-6
  19. Very nice work Jon. Epic work on all that brass too. I look forward to starting mine but I suspect I will get little if any modelling done this side of Christmas. We've now moved in so I have been sanding and painting metre after metre of 1:1 skirting board and architrave Plenty left to go too- I have 17 doors to repaint. Need to hire a hole saw to drill a vent in the workshop for my spray booth pipe.
  20. Once the two halves are glued together, the attachment of the booms is as per the resin Alley Cat Vampire. If the fit is good as it was on that kit, it is a good way of achieving the joint. I found the Airfix method harder to get a consistent joint in both booms despite the large positioning lug.
  21. Happy Happy Days! Just got mine on order from Dora. They are giving 10% of all sale prices to support Ukranian Children effected by the war. I'd usually wait for Hannants or my local shop Antics to get these in but that feels like a good cause to me. Roll on the release of the P-66 Vultee Vanguard.
