  1. I would like to build HMS Salisbury which my Grandad served on in WWII. Probably some way off actually building it yet as I have only just got my modelling bench back in action after a year, and have 2 Telford pledges to complete, and then hope to start on his final WW II ship, HMS Rupert. The White Ensign kit has been OOP for ages and Atlantic Models told me they would not re run unless demand was there. I spotted the Blackcat models kit of USS Ward and wondered if that could be used to model Salisbury without too much modification? Thanks.
  2. My question would be, looking at photos of the Hampden, do the kit wheels look to " thin" compared to the photo? If they do, then adjust the thickness as you describe, otherwise leave them as they are. I have never seen anything recorded that Airfix moulded their wheels too thin. They always have had a pretty good reputation for accuracy in the early kits.
  3. I too had two very warped kits from the original release. Ultimately I did finish them and am happy with the final result but my build enjoyment was severely curtailed by the fit problems generated by the huge warp. Suggestion at the time was that the parts were ejected from the mould too early whilst the ( soft) plastic was too warm, or maybe hung up in the mould as it was ejected and the suppliers quality control did not pick it up. Airfix released an interesting video when they launched the latest 1/24 Spitfire featuring the injection moulding company they were using in the UK. The video showed a lot of the production process and the number of checks involved to ensure mouldings came our properly. Maybe that's the reason behind the improved quality of the parts.
  4. Sad, but understandable, especially as I too have reached my chosen retirement age. Have to stock up on some Finnish sheets for my unbuilt stash!
  5. When we flew in Chipmunks in the Cadets, we wore these " cushion" type parachutes and I can assure you running to an aircraft was not something you could do, especially ff the straps were pre tightened! Best we could do was an awkward bent forward waddle. Climbing up on the wing was equally challenging!
  6. 1 hour till doors open for traders and displaying clubs. Lets have a great day!
  7. Bump up- lots of willing volunteers getting ready for the major set up on Saturday 😀
  8. North Somerset never disappoint at Telford and are regular winners of best club display, of which a judging criteria is I believe to " engage the public" . I recall the " Shed" and was there a "Trench" too?
  9. We at IPMS Avon tend to display to a theme for Telford. Our members put their ideas forward around October the year before and the club members vote on a theme for the following year. The fall back is " no theme". We then build during the year for that theme, and the proposer has overall control of the finished look. As a club we are hopefully not too prescriptive as to what gets built or how " good" the finished models are because we want to remain inclusive for all our members, so it's key that any theme can include the interests of all members. My impression of Telford and many other regional show displays is that some clubs go to great efforts to put on a display for the public and other visiting modellers. We've modelled around major anniversary events such as " D Day to Paris " and our own Club anniversary ( 30 and this year 40 years) , themes of colour such as " Red" and "Black & White" , which can be fun as for example you can built to a " Black and White " theme, but the model may not actually be painted either of those colours such as a soldier of the Black Watch. Our club web site has many years of examples to see in the Gallery. https://www.ipmsavon.org.uk/gallery.php

  11. Don't Eduard show their instructions as PDF's on their site? The instructions should show how the belts should be attached. do recall from an old article in (think ) SAM magazine that showed the upper corners of the seat were not solid as moulded but were a tubular frame which is a simple modification with a drill.
  12. But are those rear cockpit screens shown powered on? I've sat in some old jet cockpits and have seen similar orange screens, but they did not seem that bright when powered off.
  13. pretty sure there was one on E Bay UK last night but it only had a day to go so may have sold. They do appear there from time to time so maybe set up a search.
  14. Invites going out next week. PM me if you don't get yours Jabba.
  15. May be me, but I have to admit I am not seeing a huge difference between the three photos. The larger one of the Swiss Venom is taken off centre so the " blind " flying panel looks to be over to the left of the cockpit but I think is actually central just as in the shots of the Venom and Vampire. The group of instruments to the right sidewall are hidden by the upper side of the cockpit. I would assume the Swiss Venoms will have some extra upgrades over the Earlier RAF ones as they remained in service for longer and seem to be the bulk of the ones still flying.
  16. Thanks Rob, took a look at your WIP last night. Inspirational stuff and thanks for the pointer ( I should have thought of it!).
  17. Aside from the figures that water is excellent. Would you mind sharing how you did that?
  18. Not sure- I will check and report back here. Any specific club/Sig you are asking on behalf of Jabba?
  19. For NMF there is now quite a wide choice. My preference are lacquers, such as the original Alclad. I also use MRP and SMS lacquers. The AK Extreme metal range is also very good but I believe may be an enamel. Tamiya also have some lacquer shades. All these except for Tamiya are designed for airbrushing. Tamiya sprays well when diluted. I also use Gunze metallics by brush, and again they can be thinned for spraying. They have two ranges. One is buffable which is useful in some circumstances. All of these( in my opinion and in most cases according to the manufacturer) need a primer coat but are easy to apply and then stick very well, making it easy to mask multiple panels. They also dry in seconds/minutes, allowing rapid masking for other shades. I use post it notes of various sizes to quickly mask panels. The caution is that although all the lacquer brands seem to work together well, they may be a bit hot to use over AK shades. I tend to work with Alclad first, then MRP, then SMS and Tamiya and finally AK. To keep track on a large project like a 1/48th Lightning I will try to keep notes as to which paint has gone where. Good luck. a couple of examples using these paints https://www.ipmsavon.org.uk/meetings-gallery.php?year=19#20190918-5 https://www.ipmsavon.org.uk/photo-page.php?page_id=77#Class 2 - Aircraft 1/48-1
  20. There is a thread on rumourmonger about the Mikro Mir kit. I've seen one at our recent club night. Looks very nice, but I can't comment on the accuracy, however it didn't display any obvious shape issues to me.
  21. Hmm, that image from the Academy catalogue looks like a two seater to me otherwise how would the rear gun be fired?
  22. Hi Everyone, IPMS Avon is pleased to be able to confirm our Annual Show is on for 2023. This years event will be on Sunday 6th August and our ambition is to once more fill all three sports halls at the Thornbury Leisure Centre. We will be sending out invitations to Clubs, SiGs and Traders in early March, but interest is already high, so we can take enquiries of interest via our club email at [email protected]. Bookings can't be confirmed until later in the year but we are going to do our best to put in a bumper show in 2023. Look forward to seeing you all there in August
  23. I fitted the closed canopy which if I recall was slightly too narrow for the fuselage. When I removed the masking, not only had paint somehow got inside the now closed fuselage, but the canopy had lots of tiny stress cracks where I had clamped it to the fuselage to spread it slightly while it dried. I think the paint got in past the odd PE panel in the lower nose which kept detaching itself, and the stress cracks were down to me. I considered removing the canopy and replacing it with a mix of the open parts and a vac form , since you are right, the sections won't stack properly. However getting the canopy off caused more damage that I was prepared to bother with as I had become disheartened with the kit. Up to that point I had been enjoying the build and have salvaged a lot of the completed detail parts for the one in the stash. Next one I will also probably use a Rob Taurus vac form.
  24. GWH was 1/48th. I part built one until I trashed it after a canopy disaster 😪 and have another in the stash to replace it.
