  1. so what sort of timescale did this project take? How far from finished is it?
  2. As I aren't a ship modeller, I'm mainly building my Yamato with Lionroar set as an engineering exercise, so the idea of leaving the brass unpainted has alot of appeal, PROVIDED it turns out reasonably well(ie not covered in glue, or screwed up into a ball of frustration in the corner of the room), though if it does tarnish, I'd rather it was painted.....
  3. Fantastic! I can see I'm going to have to invest in some new tools before I start mine - what do you use to fold your etched parts? And I'm assuming a magnifying glass is pretty much essential? John
  4. I have to re-spray part of a model (using enamels) and need to mask over a decal. Decals have already been oversprayed with a matt coat. I know using masking tape will end in tears - both mine and the decal, and I've tried maskol, but that removes decals as well. So, what works? Thanks
  5. Thanks, guys - much appreciated. John
  6. Book ordered - 4 quid on Amazon (2nd hand) - thanks.
  7. Building a Hunter F.6 with a Falcon Vac-formed canopy - what is the best glue/process for attaching these? Thanks
  8. I don't even build ships - but I've always wanted to build a big battleship. So......... last week I ordered this kit and the Lionroar set...... ...I must be mad!
  9. In my opinion, there's more than a bit of difference in retiring a working prototype at the end of its life to a museum, than bunging in a plastic mock-up of something that may go into service at some point in the future. My perception of a museum is that its about preserving history - not predicting the future...
  10. The F-35 has no connection with the RAF either at the moment.......unless we fill museums up with "wishful thinking"? At least the Ki100 is a genuinely historic airframe, not a replica, and more appropriate in an AIR FORCE museum than a Mew Gull, Gipsy Moth, etc.....
  11. FFS! Is it just me, or does anyone else get wee weed off with this? Shouldn't a museum by defination contain authentic displays, rather than replicas, (although there is something to be said for filling gaps in collections with replicas if originals don't exist at all) and I always had the impression the things on display should at least be slightly old.... Meanwhile, I'm betting the Tempest is still hidden in the rafters....
  12. Are the wooden decks, the chains and main gun barrels all part of the Lionroar set?
  13. What's the cost of that much brass? If its like my Lancaster, probably several times the cost of the kit? I've always liked the Yamato (tons of guns), but after seeing this, I don't think I can build one without adding the etch sets.....
  14. I've said this before, and I believe it will still be true - general markup in retail is 35-40% for every person on-selling a product. Bearing in mind import tax and freight will still have to be paid a supplier to get WNW kits into the UK, and no matter how much of a "nice guy" Peter Jackson is, he's still in the business of making a profit, buying direct plus the HMRC fees are likely to be significantly less than the cost of seeing WNW kits sitting on an importer's shelves....
  15. Plus running reliably, and finding a mechanic that knows anything about servicing/maintaining a Napier Sabre is problematic....
  16. Thanks guys - might manage to be a christmas pressie then....
  17. Out of curiousity, as a comparison, how much was the Arizona model?
  18. This is one of my favourite museums - variety of exhibits, well presented, with plenty of space that disguises well the amount of items on display - in fact, the first time I visited I thought "is that it?", and four hours later I was still finding new stuff to look at. One of the few museums that have managed to display suspended aircraft that you can still get good views of, without feeling like you are peering up into the rafters staring at the rather boring undersides of whatever..... Natutal lighting is good too.
  19. Whenever there is a well publicised accident or disaster there are jokes and humour - most of it usually tactless - but that doesn't make it less funny. When the first space shuttle blew up, there were jokes about it before the debris had hit the ground. The recent earthquakes in Japan and Christchurch - same deal. Joking about misfortune seems to be human nature?
  20. Acrylic thinners? Do you match the thinners to the paint, to soften the paint (ie acrylic thinners for acrylic paint, or enamel thinners for enamel paint) or are you trying to soften the decal?
