  1. Now that is a very nice looking Tiger Moth. Barney http://www.barneysairforce.com
  2. Nicely done Paul, it is my favourite jet fighter. Now if only some manufacturer would produce a true Mk6..with the slats open, it would make my day. Barney
  3. Thanks Matt. I believe that the Tiffie was the Monogram kit but too long ago to remember. The idea for the CF-18 was my idea as I had a partly painted model and a spare set of decals. The 2015 Hornet in 1:1 scale had a Battle of Britain motif but to my eye the glossy colours were away out of whack. Had lunch today with a pilot whose father also flew Typhoons in the RCAF and of course Andy had to have a model so he bought the big Airfix kit and wanted me to build it. Two years ago I would have but but....Mother Nature can be too cruel. Barney
  4. And a couple more of the Tiffie and friend Barney
  5. Harry and myself examining the 1:48 scale bird Barney
  6. Matt: Here's the Hornet and I'm searching through 20k pics for the real Pulverizer IV Barney
  7. A tale of a real Canadian hero...F/L Harry Hardy, 441 Sqn RCAF.. A few years ago I built a 1:48 scale "Pulverizer IV and at our local flying club dinner, we had none other than F/L Harry Hardy as guest speaker. I brought my model and Harry very graciously signed the underside of the wing. Later I had a CF-18 in need of finishing but the decals went TU and it sat on the shelf for a couple of years until one day while going through my decal collection I found a set of "Pulverizer IV" decals which fit the Hornet. I entered the two models of Harry's bomber at the local Vancouver IPMS show and took a First in category...and Harry was there and we knocked back a couple of brew to celebrate . Matt: I love your build. It matches the copy of a photo of Harry's aircraft dating back to 1945. Really great workmanship Barney
  8. Nice work Paul. Gotta love the Tiger Moth!. I use the same procedure for rigging that you used here but when it comes to trimming and refinishing the underside of the bottom wing, I punch out discs from .005" plastic card to represent inspection panels which all fabric covered aircraft are required to have..then glue them over the ugly spot that is left after trimming the threads. . Most of the panels are 6" in diameter so in 1/48 scale that would be about 1/9" Barney
  9. I had the privilege of test flying a fully rebuilt DH60M, CF-ADI which at one time in its history flew on floats in northern Saskatchewan. Barney
  10. Very nice work Chris! Having build 6 of them in the past, I've always found them to be trouble free and although a bit challenging, a pleasure to build. I owned a 1:1 scale Tiger 60 years ago and just 2 days ago a friend offered me a re-build project. Unfortunately I had to let my medical lapse due to loss of vision. Life goes on. My 1:32 scale model can be viewed at http://www.barneysairforce.com Barney
  11. I've flown both026 and 051 along with a few more. A most delightful handling aircraft Barney
  12. Unfortunately the gear is the weakest point in that kit. Mine was OOB except for decals (Kenting Aviation civil markings) and it did not take long before the gear would not support the model. Oh well the aircraft did not last very long in real life either Barney
  13. After WW2 here on the west coast of the Great White North, a company operated a Walrus for a while hauling freight and because of its structure the old bird gave off a great RADAR signature skin paint. The USAF used the thing as a target and would frequently do intercepts on it. The crew got tired of the Yanks play time and made up a sign which one of the crew exhibited from the front hatch. The sign Read "Combine sex and travel". One of the kerosene converter pilots laughed so hard that he stalled but was able to recover before hitting the water. Barney
  14. Gotta love the Tiger Moth! I've built six of them for myself and others and have owned a 1:1 DH82C. Great workmanship Barney http://www.barneysairforce.com.
  15. I really did not try to start a war here! I merely made a statement which was true. As for "considering the source", well I do weather models but very lightly . As for being miserable...I've lost most of my near vision and arthritis has taken its toll on my hands so with that I'm no longer able to build any scale and I've given up my pilots license leaving my wee Grumman whining in the hangar. Scooby: No excuses for being miserable I know but when you have to give up two of your favourite pass times, it does leave you with an empty feeling. And for what it is worth, the DC-3 and I were born two months apart. Regards to all Barney
  16. I really hate to be a negative spoiler but in all my years in the RCAF/CAF I never saw a C-47 weathered like this one and I saw a lot of them.. If you are going to finish a model t0p represent the real thing, please get some good references. Barney http://www.barneysairgorce.com
  17. Save some work..wrap a piece of her panty hose around the pipe and secure with a rubber band. Turn on the vacuum and keep checking the end of the hose. The parts will be held to the nylon. Barney
  18. DH Mosquito in formation with a Spitfire and Mustang. The Mossy is privately owned by a fellow in Vancouver. Barney
  19. All that space going to waste...and raised panel lines...Take a look here http://www.barneysairforce.com and see what an old geezer with too much time on his hands did about the above. My better half says that I'm nuts. Nice looking Herc by the way \ Barney
  20. Having researched the Arrow program while in RCAF Staff School, I can say that the old tale that it was the US that forced the cancellation is a bag of BS. It was cost over-runs($880,000,000 CDN) plus another $293 Million for the failed Sparrow missile and fire control system that caused the Arrows demise. There was also the Very Old School Army Grunt General who was John D's Minister of Defence , who on the day the Arrow rolled out for the first time told the PM that now that the Russians have long range missiles we wont need that thing (the Arrow) There was also the conflict between PM John Diefenbaker and the president of AVRO Canada, Crawford Gordon. which did not help matters. The Americans went so far as to offer 100 shipsets of the Hughs Falcon system if we would continue with the Arrow. Sadly RL206, Arrow Mk2 with the Iroquois engines was ready for test flying when the order to stop all work on the project. As an aside my brother worked in the engine test facility. Barney
  21. My 1:48 Typhoon is signed underwing by the pilot, F/L Harry Hardy, 441 Sqn RCAF. And it is "Pulveriser" IV Barney
  22. Old 1/100 scale M&B B737-200 with original decals 30 yrs+. No photos with the gear on but here you are Barney
  23. I've built the 1:48 scale Hasegawa -104 using Leading Edge Decals for one of the 441 Sqn pilots who flew the bird.. It was a birthday present which he greatly appreciated. Barney http://www.barneysairforce.com
  24. The RCAF had a number of engineers and pilots attached to North West Industries which was located at Edmonton City Airport. RCAF Station Namao is about 8 miles north of CYXD and there was very little build up in '65. The RCAF pilots test flew the jets, including USAF machines that were being overhauled by NWI. The RCAF was not interested in the Thunderpig which was really not much of an aircraft. Did you guys know that a number of RAF aircraft were also based at Namao with RAF crews? I worked in Namao Tower during the late '50s and saw some interesting birds including a few all white V-types transiting to the south Pacific, We also had a lot of USAF aircraft through Namao enroute to Alaska with more than our share of bend tin. Barney RCAF F/L retired
