Was the Virago paint scheme your idea?

I loved the 'speed blocks' paint schemes on Kenny Roberts' race bikes and the flat-trackers in the late seventies and early eighties, and wanted to pay homage to those great bikes and riders. In this scheme you don't need a tank badge to know it's a Yamaha.

This is actually one of my 'dubious quality' builds, as the speed blocks on the left and right sides of the tanks are ever so slightly different, and that spoils the whole thing for me even though I am really pleased with the rest of the model.

What colour did you use for the 1/72 Sword Seafire III in IAC colours?

The airframe colour I used is the SMS acrylic lacquer 'British Interior' (PL100), which sprays beautifully. Although 'airbrush ready' I found it was much easier to use when thinned slightly with Mr Color Levelling Thinner.

  3. My output for 2023 is the highest since I restarted modelling in 2009, but it still stands at an unimpressive sixteen for the year. I haven't really gone to town on any of them with extra detailing, though the Virago custom was significantly reworked and the Vosper MTB had some rigging and figures added. Not all of them have been posted here as RFI Topics, but for those that have been the photo title will be linked to take you to the original RFI Post.

  4. Good day All, herewith my latest off the bench.

'Orders'. Italy, March 1944. A BK (Battery Captain) of 12 Regt (HAC) RA [Honourable Artillery Company, Royal Artillery] gives preliminary Orders to one of his Troop Commanders prior to moving up to firing positions at Monte Cassino.

This is the Revell (ex Matchbox) 1/76 scale M7 Priest with Milicast figures. Some of the Matchbox bases are great, but I didn't like the one with this kit. It was a bit nondescript and the model didn't fit very well, so I made a simple base of my own. This new base is just a piece of foamboard with household filler to provide the groundworks and various commercially available model railway and dolls' house diorama accessories for the plants, foliage and grass.

Photos are taken with my phone (Google Pixel 7) so the focal depth is quite limited, but they should give you some idea of the model.

    How was the kit?

The kit is very nice; and though definitely short run it goes together rather well and the major parts line up almost perfectly. The plastic is quite soft, as befits a short run offering, but the detail is quite crisp and really good for 72nd. The cockpit took some careful dry fitting to get alignment correct and work out just how it actually fitted together as the instructions were reasonable at best in this area, and there are no alignment marks or pins. Apart from that everything was very straightforward. The exhausts need backing plates fitting before the fuselage halves are glued together or you risk losing the exhausts in to the void if you are not careful, but there were no real pitfalls to the kit.

  6. Hi All, this is Airfix's Spitfire Vc; the decent one, not the starter kit. Its a really nice kit and goes together very well, as most of their later kits do. I had no problems with the fit of the wings to the fuselage, a problem some seem to have encountered, and no filler was used at these joints. Stencils are from the kit's decals and the national markings and aircraft serials are from the Xtradecals 'History of 74 Squadron' sheet.

74 Sqn spent the two years from April '42 to April '44 in various locations in the Middle East, with a short stay in Sep-Oct '43 at RAF Nicosia in Cyprus. The model depicts Spirfire Vc 'L' taking off from RAF Nicosia in early Oct '43, retracting the undercarriage and accelerating to climbing speed; heading out on a CAP over the eastern Mediterranean.

  7. Hi All, This is the Sword Seafire III in Irish Air Corps colours. The main colour is the SMS acrylic lacquer RAF Cockpit Green and the decals for the national markings are from the Colorado 'Exotic Spitfires' sheet. Stencils are from the Sword decals, and the only enhancement is a set of Eduard seat belts. Although it lacks alignment pins or marked locations, the kit fits together very easily; though I wouldn't recommend it as a first model.

This is number eight in my ongoing odyssey of Irish Air Corps' aircraft.

The nearest front wheel of the APC looks like its not really touching the road

It is touching the road - honest! It's difficult to add flat spots to moulded rubber tyres, so they have a very small contact spot. There are resin replacements available, but they're more expensive than the model, so I just made it out of the box; faults and all.

It's a good thing to have all the major elements in your diorama not running parallel to the diorama-base

Absolutely correct, and a limitation of my limited imagination. I wasn't able to come up with a solution that would show the figures and vehicle in such a juxtaposition as to fit a small base and capture the moment. Thank you for the kind comments, but yes, not ideal.

  9. The Hobbyboss M706 Commando APC and Masterbox 'Somewhere in Saigon' figures. The Hobbyboss M706 is not too bad, it fits well and the external detail is reasonable, but the interior suffers from a plethora of ejector pin marks, which is why it is built closed up. The Masterbox figures are really nice for injection moulded items and I had a lot of fun trying some new (to me) painting techniques.

The diorama base is hard foam with a scratchbuilt door and commercially available windows and shutters. The road sign is a very rough translation of 'Pleasure Street'.

As a title I am stuck between 'Fi' Dolla' or 'Too Boocoop' (Too beaucoup). The figures are based on the two scenes from 'Full Metal Jacket', hence the Too Boocoop reference. I won't expand on the 'Fi' Dolla' reference...

    I just painted it gray

There were so many apparent variations in the 'colours' in the photos I found on the internet (mostly black-and-white, so just looking at tonal variations) that I don't think you could be called 'wrong' for doing that.

it feels like you have captured the last seconds of calm before the MTB's engines are crash started and launch it towards its "prey".

Thank you Richard, this is exactly the moment I was trying to capture. The 'prey' spotted off the starboard beam, engines just on the point of crash start, and helmsman poised to swing the wheel 'round and take them on the course in to action. There's lots more to describe, but I'll let the picture paint the thousand words.

What does the cat think when they go into action?

The cat, like most cats, gives himself a clean and goes to see if there is something else to eat; much like Unsinkable Sam (sunk on the Bismark, HMS Cossack and HMS Ark Royal, but saved on each occasion and finally 'assigned' on-shore in Belfast)
